Hey~ this is from the Pokemon scanlation project in the other topic. We're starting to get to work, and we need to know how to translate people's names, so I'd like to conduct a poll on people's preferences! (We are going to do Green boy, Blue girl.)

Here's an explanation of what options we have:
    1) Full Japanese: All characters, Pokemon, places, nicknames attacks, etc, are taken directly from the Japanese (example: Minaki instead of Eusine)
    2) English + Japanese (Japanese nick): All characters that appear in the Pokemon games keep their English game names; other original characters keep their Japanese names. Pokemon nicknames are taken from the Japanese. (example: Kurtz instead of Keane or Cart)
    3) English + Japanese (original nick): All characters that appear in the Pokemon games keep their English game names; other original characters keep their Japanese names. Pokemon nicknames are adapted from the Japanese, but use the English name as a base.
    4) Chuang Yi (corrected): All characters are given the same names as in the Chuang Yi version, but any names that are incorrect in the Chuang Yi are fixed. (example: Kagari, known in Chuang Yi as Marge, retains her English game name of Courtney)
    5) Chuang Yi (pure): All characters are given the same names as in the Chuang Yi version.

    Thanks for your input!

    Corrected Chuang Yi!

    There's no other way.

No Japanese-English Mixes and NO FANNAMING! It has to be Chuang Yi with corrections (like Marge -> Courtney, Maryann & Tyler -> Gabby & Ty)

Chuang Yi Corrected! That's the only one that makes since here.

Chuang Yi corrected would probably be the only names that would make sense to me.

    4) or 2)
I don't know what happens to the nicknames in Chuang Yi (corrected), but I prefer "Aitro" and "Typhlo" to "Ataro" and "Explotaro" :S

NO! It's not "corrected"! The names you list are PURE FANWANK. Every time you tell Coronis's fanname, you make a kitten suffer.

    But this is a fan-work! >>

Seriously, I don't care what nicknames we use for the Pokemon as long as we stay consistent.

Ah... I never realized that! What about Explotaro? Is that Chuang Yi name, Viz name, Japanese name?

ED: like I said, I still prefer Typhlo to Explotaro. Though nicknames are a mere detail in this project, I think.... ^^*

Chuang Yi. Viz didn't reach GS Saga.

All Pokemon nicknames and names for characters that don't appear outside Pokemon Special manga are Coronis-coined.

I consider Coronis's fan names to be one of the biggest hoaxes in the Pokemon fandom. I know he acknowledges that those are fanwanked on Serebii.Net forums but still, many people don't realise that.

Doesn't he put a big disclaimer at the top of all his summaries? Oh, wait, that's just copyright stuff.

I was going to use Coronis names for chapter titles (for some people who might cross-reference with his summaries, etc), since they pretty much are straightforward translations. And, also, I don't know the Chaung Yi titles, but I suppose if we all voted for Chuang Yi corrected, I'd be obligated to use those. Any thoughts?

benji, do you mean you're going to use the ex. Vs. Caterpie, Vs. Sunkern, Vs. Dragonair kind of titles? I thought it was easier with those, and not the "The mighty power of....... Metapod?!?!?!?" kind.
I've no clue what's what, Chuang's Coronis' though, so don't get mad, Maxim ^^'

Yes, many people (like me) are probably used to Coronis' names.

Yes, I'm going to make it official here. While I do personally prefer English + Japanese (and I despise Viz's nicknames >_>), we're going to go with Chuang Yi corrected, since there has been an overwhelming majority supporting that, and I think it's important that we do what the fans want.

@Fabledawn: Some of the original Japanese chapter names are "Vs", some of them actually have names, and some of them don't have any names at all. I don't know how Chuang Yi did them, so if somebody could provide the Chuang Yi names, that would be helpful.

@minaki-chan: That means Chuang Yi chapter names?

All chapters in the manga (except The Last Battle etc) has VS. In fact there was Vs Kyogre & Groudon V.

Typhlosion's nickname consist of explosion and taro, because Explosion is the first part of Typhlosion's specie name in Japanese (and Chinese too), and taro (tai lang in Chinese) is just how Gold nicknames. I think Explotaro is a more accurate translation because Typhlo just doesn't have the signature taro, unless we go for Typhlotaro (which had never existed in any manga before).

No, I meant in the original Japanese version. The chapters in the FireRed/LeafGreen series didn't have chapter names, for example. (see attached table of contents from volume 25)
