Ever noticed that many trainers in the first generation have whips? kinda makes me think that Pokemon was suposed to be more brutal.

It's a left over concept from the early days of the alpha and pre planning stages of "Capsule Monsters"
The likelihood is some of the early sprite work was probably adapted for the eventual Pocket Monsters games.

Wow, that's awful ._. it would be one thing if Team Rocket grunts had them, but "good" trainers too?
