All I know is that I'd prefer Pok?mon over something where EVERYTHING either starts with "Digi" or ends with "Mon", just because it would drive me crazy sooner or later. Heck, I can't stand the "Neo" in most things on Neopets, and at least the pets don't start in "Neo" there.
What are the Digimon games like, by the way?
Names ending with 'mon' is just a naming pattern going for it, kinda like how Megaman/Rockman games have every robot master named "??? Man". If you wanna know how the games are like, I suggest going to gamefaqs.com and reading the reviews for Digimon World 1-3.
Anyway, while I may be writing a fanfic for Pokemon, and I think the anime has improved a lot (it couldn't get any lower than Jouto :P), I still prefer Digimon.
-games. Pokemon has good games, and I will say they are better than the Digimon World series, but the Digimon World series is better than more people give them credit for.
-the monster designs. Hmm.... well, I seem to like both. Pokemon has rather simplistic designs, most of which can be loved for being cute. Despite simplicity, many Pokemon end up being very cool or beautiful-looking (especially Dragonair ^_^). The Digimon designs are very complicated and detailed (they have tendons showing on Agumon's hand, and what appears to be a computer chip can be seen through a part of Cyberdramon's leg), and they mostly have a coolness factor to them. Cuteness is rather rare in Digimon when compared to Pokemon, however, Digimon must have a quality over quantity because I find that Culumon is the cutest character in existance (especially when it has its Japanese voice, "culu!"). Basically, they both have their ups.
-music. In terms of the anime dubs, they both have pretty lousy music, so I won't count them. The games both have pretty nice tunes here and there, but in the Japanese anime's music, Digimon wins. The original Pocket Monsters anime has some good songs like OK and Challenger, however, I constantly find myself listening to Digimon songs more often, especially One Vision (which is among my favorite anime songs ever). Then there's the BGMs. Pocket Monster's BGMs are good, but the BGMs in Digimon seem so much more catchy and intensely-fitting of the situations they're used in. For that matter, I've downloaded tons of Digimon's BGMs (something I don't do often with non-vocal music).
-anime, this is the biggey. Pokemon's anime is very repetitive for the most part, every episode seems to follow a set formula, etc. Digimon, however, is much more unique and has plenty of nice twists and turns, plus the story is extremely realistic and dark compared to Pokemon (especially Tamers). I personally like dark realistic drama series much more than simple plots with formulaic episodes. Also, rather than dragging on for the sake of advertising video games, the Digimon series know when to quit at around 50 episodes, and while the anime itself is based off a franchise that derived from virtual pets, the plot is 100% original material with little intent on advertising (the same goes for the manga). Lastly, I have a bit of bias in favor of Digimon. Pokemon did start my interest in anime, I'll give it that (however, it wasn't the first Japanese show I've seen, so you know). However, Digimon Tamers was the first anime series I've seen entirely in Japanese, so aside from being a great series in itself, Tamers has the added bonus of holding that special place in my heart.
