Cartoon Network's Saturday morning action powerhouse block CRUSHZONE (6:30-9:30 a.m.) also proved popular with kids and boys 9-14. Compared to last year, kids 9-14 average delivery (291,000) grew by 5% and boys 9-14 delivery (244,000) grew by 8%. Pokémon Battle Galactica (7 a.m.) scored as the most popular individual program, earning 50% delivery growth among kids 9-14 (328,000) and 63% growth among boys 9-14 (261,000).

    TVByTheNumbers

Bear with me the misspelling of the show and that it mentions the long dead CrushZone block.

So even at 7AM EST it's still gaining in ratings somehow. No thanks to the people who watch the episodes on YouTube of course.

I guess these figures laugh at the nostalgic nay-sayers who say that the anime's popularity has been constantly falling since the 'golden age' of the anime

5 years ago, when network television still had saturday morning cartoons, that might be true. But the move to Cartoon Network is almost genius. Network teleivison has been eliminating their kids program, so stations like Nicholodeon and Cartoon Network allow the same shows to focus on their audience, and can be shown at almost any time.

To bad this WILL NOT stop mentally retarded Cartoon Network from treating it like CRAP. Which is BS, BTW...

    >:-(

Cartoon Network has given it a solid time slot and shows re-runs throughout the week. They also debut movies and show movies and do marathons of shows during some weekends too.

How are they treating it badly?

You live in Europe; you don't matter.

I know someone is going to bitch so I'll clear up the above statement. You don't matter ratings-wise in America.

Premieres at 7AM EST and then an encore at 7:30AM EST on Saturday and Sunday respectively are good time slots? Those are death slots.

There is no way I would get up at 7am to watch it, nothing can motivate me enough to do such a thing.

I have cartoonnetwork east and west, so i can watch it at 7:00 and again at 10:00 (or sometime around there). But i usually watch it at 10:00 cause i can't get up to watch it either XD

Actually, the only way those so-called "nostalgic naysayers" can quit saying that is if the ratings actually exceeded Johto rather than, you know, sink even further below than that same season. I know in Japan, the Japanese ratings of Johto were, like, 8.8. With DP, they're at best 6.5, if not even lower than that. I won't be surprised if they even sank lower than the Battle Pike episode (which was apparently the lowest rated AG episode, and at the time the lowest rated episode ever.). I know a few things about marketing and advertising (other than the fact that I watched a few TV shows that ended up being killed off due to ratings loss and desperate measures [like West Wing], I also have an Aunt who works in the advertisement business and an Uncle who teaches marketing/advertisement skills in UNC of Chapel Hill.), and even going by the figures posted on here, I think it's pretty evident that it is sinking quite a bit in popularity (I'm pretty sure that it'd be closer to 8.8 if it had truly got a boost in popularity. I'm not saying that it should be closer to Kanto (I know that's not likely), I'm just saying that if they want to be considered truly popular to the fanbase, the ratings need to exceed Johto, as apparently it's considered the worst season by the populace (not that I think it was bad, but still.)

It doesn't matter how many people watch it.

    It matters who watches it.

The reason the Superbowl is great for advertisers isn't because of the 30 million random socermoms, wives, girlfriends, and hipsters watching it "ironically" are all watching it. It's because almost every 18-49 year old male (the age demo with the most disposable income) is watching it, the same show, at the same time.

Likewise, if 20 millioin people watched Pokemon, it would get canned if kids didn't watch it. And as the article points out, viewership is actually increasing.

Anyway, anyone who thinks Pokemon is doing poorly is nothing short of delusional.

I was thinking of kids, more or less, seeing how 2.1 million kids is still far too small compared to Johto. To me, at least, it would be more like 8.9 million kids watching it in order for it to truly be getting out of the rut that it is currently in. Unless it can do that, it can never truly become more popular.

And I'm definitely not delusional. I wouldn't even be in a college right now if I were. In fact, if I were, I wouldn't even have access to a computer (As mental asylums usually keep their patients locked up in a padded cell.)

PS, I specifically stated that it needs to rise above Johto's ratings because according to what is apparently the majority of the fanbase on here (not necessarily me or other Misty fans, but still), Johto was the worst season. It hasn't got anything to do with nostalgia at all as much as trying to exceed the reputed worst saga by the fanbase (even though I never even saw anything wrong with it.).

It doesn't matter how many people watch it, it matters who participates in Nielsen ratings system, a terrible system in the first place.

Anyway, Johto was the worst saga. It's just that it was airing when Pokémon was still popular and thus many people watched it. It's not that hard to figure out. Actually, I'll look up of some of Johto's ratings at some point since it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Speak for yourself! Actually for me and other my friends Johto was the best, because of fun, humor, good storyline and less commercial stuff like stupid Pokeathlon, Rangers or unnecessary Johto Festival in DP saga. Just because you hate Johto, doesn't mean that everyone thinks the same.

    ^^^YES.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    CN=dead to me either way.

    So... yeah...

    =/

Before I proceed, I don't see how 7am slots are bad. Networks give death slots (on network television, that's usually prime time 7pm-10pm on Friday) in an effort to get declining ratings so they can cancel a show.

But 7am for a show aimed at hyperactive little kids hopped up on ADD meds and sugary cereal? I had NO trouble getting up that early. My parents hated me for it. You put on a kids show too late in the day, then you risk airing it when many are doing extracurricular activites or during family time.

I could be wrong, but 7-8am slots doesn't seem too bad, or at least not a death slot, for a show aimed at kids.

I was thinking of kids, more or less, seeing how 2.1 million kids is still far too small compared to Johto. First off, where are these numbers coming from?

Remember, Pokemon outside of Japan was still in it's Fad status where it was everywhere. In movie theaters, lunch boxes, t-shirts, etc...

Also, again, it doesn't matter how many total watch it, but core demos.

Also, THE SHOW IS 10+ YEARS OLD. It's incredibly unrealistic to expect a show to maintain it's same success year after year after year. Network standards change. Look at other long running shows like ER. ER was never in danger of getting canned, but the # of people dropped. 33million tuned into season 1 finale, whereas about 16 million people tuned into it's final episode 15 years later. (link)

    FIGURE OF SPEECH

    Look it up.

It doesn't matter how many people watch it, it matters who participates in Nielsen ratings system, a terrible system in the first place.

Really? Why do you say that? Advertisers seem happy relying on their numbers. And with the upgrade to installed boxes rather than using hand-written notebooks, it's easier to track them now more than ever.

    Less commerical stuff?

    lol

You do know the entire point of the anime is to promote the franchise. You can't get much more blatant than Pokemon. Where every Pokedex looks pretty similar to the current generation of the Game Boy or DS. The games themselves usually start in the player's bedroom which has a NES/SNES/Wii/whatever.

    Must have missed those parts.
Just because you and your friends love Johto, doesn't mean that everyone thinks the same..

Those who love Johto are far and few. Even among the people who think Pokemon (everything, not just anime) sucks after Gen II hate Johto. You want a saga where you can easily skip 90% of the episodes and not miss anything, including evolutions, go ahead. Heracross stayed around for what, 12 episodes?

I just have to say that I'm really appreciating this debate. I'm actually learning some things about ratings and such.

And as far as 7AM being a deathslot...not for their target audience. I remember back when I was younger waking up at the crack of dawn to catch Saturday cartoons and the same on the school days.

I just said why I like Johto. I didn't say that everyone must.

Lol. I know. But DP has this too much. It's not funny seeing unnecessary Johto stuff (like Pokeathlon and Festival) introducing in Sinnoh saga. Just because Pokemon Company wants to make more money. This is pathetic.

    Any proof or something?

I would rather like to see tons of Johto fillers, than one whole episode focused on learning one stupid attack, or whole episodes when one pokemon is preparing to evolution.

So what? Johto's time in the anime promoted Johto features. Sinnoh's time in the anime promotes Sinnoh features. They're both doing the same thing. Why does Johto get praise for it and Sinnoh is blamed for it?

    Any proof or something?

Obviously there's no polling done on something so trivial. But even among the nostalgia crazy fans in threads on here and SPPF, they admit that Johto fillers* are pointless and boring, and the region as a whole has little character development and most of it can easily be skipped. A great way to see this is the Pokemon themselves:

Kanto Starters: Still on the team in Johto. All of them pretty much have to be plot-deviced out because Ash basically wouldn't use the others before these guys.
Heracross: Was in the party for something like 12 or 13 episodes. When he finished with Tauros for like, 5 minutes of one episode, Ash sends Tauros back but doesn't re-call Heracross.
Johto starters: One evolution to it's middle form. And even though Bulbasaur and Squirtle never evolved, they still learned powerful moves such as Hydro Pump and Solarbeam. None of the Johto starters learn anything nearly as powerful. Bayleef comes closest with Body Slam, and that isn't even a grass type attack.

**Fillers are not necessarily synonymous with bad episodes. Bad episodes are subjective. A filler is an episode that can otherwise be skipped since it doesn't contain any advancements of the overall plot. And fillers will happen in any region. But when there's so many of them, it means Pokemon don't learn moves or aren't captured, and characters lag in development. Hence why Johto's massive amount of filler is bad.

I would rather like to see tons of Johto fillers, than one whole episode focused on learning one stupid attack, or whole episodes when one pokemon is preparing to evolution.

That's nice? I mean, when I watch Pokemon, I want Pokemon to evolve and learn new attacks. That rarely happened in Johto.
