This article talks about how the modern-day swine flu is showing signs that it has the potential to become a worldwide pandemic. Like the infamous 1918 Spanish flu, it attacks mainly the younger generation who normally is able to fight off the flu easily (over half of the cases in the United States are in the 5-to-24 age group.) It is spreading easily in North America but not so much in Europe, just like Hong Kong flu in 1968. And, like the mini-pandemic of Russian flu in 1977, some people seem to be immune to it. Even if the disease itself isn't exceptionally deadly, the signs that it could spread around the world certainly are.
