Sekichiku City was a place of great joy to one little girl. Although she had lost her parents, she had gained a wonderful father figure. He was always there for her and always looked out for her. Every day she was taught ninjutsu by her father figure. Although she despised his poisonous bugs, she loved her father figure. Every morning, she woke up to a wonderful breakfast. She had built up a rivalry with her father figure's daughter. She had created a bond with her father figure's younger sister.
Today, the young girl, almost 10 years old, was outside practicing with her father figure. The sun was shining beautifully outside and the soft breeze blew her hair as she practiced her punching. She threw out her fist, curving it right before her arm reached its length. She pulled her fist back and struck out with the other one, keeping her legs bent and her eyes forward. Her father figure watched intently with his onyx eyes, being certain that she kept her body sturdy and her knees slightly outward. Despite his watchful eye, he wasn't able to catch her looking around at the trees that surrounded them. The trees were lush that summer's end. The bird Pokémon flew around, trying to soak up the beautiful sun rays before the autumn started. The grass was green, swaying in the breeze and giving way to the wind's powerful force, bending in recognition.
Despite the emerald grass around her, where the girl was standing the grass had been worn down, leaving only soft, tanned soil. In her distraction, the girl had given her father figure a chance for discipline. Though he didn't enjoy yelling at the girl, he knew it had to be done in order for her to become a strong young woman. After all, her journey would soon start and he was unprepared to let her go.
"Nareta!" he shouted, "keep your mind focused on your punches!"
"Y-Yes, Kyou-sama!" she nodded, going back to her training. After a few minutes, her father figure, Kyou, called off the training for a short break. Nareta brushed the sweat off her forehead with the back of her left arm, moving her light brown hair in the process. With her bangs hanging to the right, it made the right side of her face sticky. Nareta plopped to the ground, panting in exhaustion.
"Giving up now, Nareta?" a voice came from Nareta's left, causing her to shoot her head toward the noise, almost cracking her neck in the process. The young girl, just a little older than Nareta, stood before her. Her purple hair was pulled back in a short ponytail as usual.
"What do you want, Anzu?" Nareta asked, pouting her bottom lip and looking at the girl with animosity clear in her eyes.
"Just seeing how your training is going," said Anzu, placing her left hand on her hip and puffing out the right side of her body, "after all, you're not going to become a Pokémon trainer without proper training yourself."
Anzu reached into her pocket and pulled out a white and red ball, flicking it in the air and catching it in her palm. She continuously tossed it and caught it until she spun it around on the tip of her finger.
"Yeah, yeah, we all know you've already gotten your first Pokémon," Nareta said, unimpressed. Anzu tossed out the Pokémon from its ball, which had been fittingly called a Monster Ball. Out of a white light, a bat-like blue Pokémon flew. It had to use sonar from its mouth due to lack of eyes and its small wings made for bad flying, but Anzu loved her Pokémon nonetheless. After all, Kyou was the one who gave it to her. Upon seeing the creature, Nareta's heart skipped a beat.
"Now play nice, Anzu," Kyou headed out of the forest, going back to Sekichiku Gym. Being the Gym Leader, he had to make sure no challengers had arrived.
"Yes, Father!" Anzu smiled.
"You don't have to flaunt your Pokémon, Anzu," Nareta said, pushing herself up from the ground with her knuckles.
"Jealous of Zubatto, are we?" Anzu snickered, filling Nareta with rage. It wasn't the Zubatto she was jealous of, Nareta wanted a Pokémon for herself. Clenching her fists, Nareta turned toward the woods and stared into the trees. Though reluctant, Nareta was determined to find her first Pokémon to rub it in Anzu's face.
"I'll get a Pokémon of my own. You'll see!" Nareta shouted, rushing off into the woods. Regardless of Anzu's calls, Nareta continued to run through the woods, trying to find herself a Pokémon. Her desperate and foolish attempts got Nareta hopelessly lost in the forest. The light from the sun barely penetrated the forest. She had gone in too deep. Nareta's heart pounded in her chest. The dark was never one of Nareta's strong suits. Ever since that fateful night, she had feared the dark. Not only that, but, in her rage, Nareta had forgotten her other fear: the fear of Pokémon. Perhaps she rushed into the forest to get away from Anzu's Pokémon and forget about her Pokémon training duties.
Regardless, she knew Kyou was going to force her to become a trainer. Nareta had never told anyone about her fear, but she didn't want to. Nareta figured Anzu would laugh at her and Kyou would be disappointed. Those were the last things Nareta wanted. A rustling in the brush next to her made Nareta jump and nearly fall to the ground.
"Dad!" Anzu shouted, rushing into the Gym where Kyou had been.
"What's the matter?" Kyou asked, brushing his blue hair out of his face.
"It's Nareta! She's gone!" Anzu said, holding back the tears that burned at her eyes. She couldn't help but feel guilty about what had happened.
"What!?" Kyou was angry. He had told Nareta many times not to run off, but Nareta never listened, "where? Where did she go!?" He was desperate for answers.
"The woods!" Anzu informed, taking Kyou's hand and rushing him out the door.
"Wh-Who's there?" Nareta stuttered, feeling as if she was going to throw-up. A small purple Pokémon with shimmering buck-teeth hopped out of the brush, shaking off a leaf that fell right between its large ears.
"Ratta!" it shouted, wagging its small, curled tail. Nareta's heart stopped beating and leapt into her throat, suffocating her. She was unable to move, let alone scream. The Pokémon's head titled to the side as it looked away from Nareta, hearing something in the distance. In a rush, it started to run off. Nareta was confused at first, unsure of what it was running from until she saw a brown blur speed past her, blowing her mid-back length hair to the side in the process. Nareta nearly gagged as the purple Pokémon's screams were heard. It had been picked up by the sharp talons of the bird Pokémon's feet and was being pecked apart by the ravenous creature.
Nareta turned and ran off without thinking, taking herself deeper into the forest. Nareta reached a large oak tree and leaned one hand against it, panting and sweating. At least she had run her daily mile.
Just when Nareta thought she was safe, she heard loud growling toward her left and a shot of fire burst into the air. Suddenly, a small, blue Pokémon was flung out of the brush and towards Nareta, making her squeal and jump to the ground to avoid a collision. The Pokémon, however, was not so lucky and was slammed into a tree by the flames Nareta had seen just moments earlier.
The armless Pokémon slid down the trunk of the tree and plopped onto its feet. A clockwise swirl pattern in the middle of the Pokémon's white belly made Nareta cringe. The internal organs of the Pokémon were clear as day.
In anger, the Pokémon's black eyes glared at the bushes near Nareta, it's bright pink lips signifying its readiness for a fight. It didn't wait long as an orange Pokémon jumped out of the bushes, growling at the blue Pokémon. Nareta was able to recognize the blue Pokémon as a Nyoromo, being a familiar face around Sekichiku City; however, the canine-like Pokémon was unidentifiable. Nareta had never seen that Pokémon before. Its yellow, bushy chest fur glimmered from what little light shined in the forest Nareta stood in, as did the fluffy, golden tail. In spite of its beauty, Nareta was also able to noticed its small fangs and sharp claws. There were two on each of its four paws, nonetheless, making Nareta's knees quake in anticipation and anxiety.
"Ga!" the orange, black-stripped Pokémon shouted, building up a fireball in its throat. Soon, that fireball molted into a large flame which was shot at the Nyoromo.
"Nyo!" Nyoromo screeched, getting hit full-on with the fiery blaze. However, it was able to stand its ground and shoot a blue stream of liquid out of its mouth, knocking back the flames and pummeling the dog. Nareta stared in horror at the scene before her.
These things. . They're, she gulped down her growing fear, they're monsters! The terror was overwhelming.
Angrily, the dog ran toward Nyoromo, who had jumped in front of Nareta after its attack. Seeing the Pokémon come at it, Nyoromo hopped to the side just as the dog spread its claws. Unable to stop its attack, the Pokémon headed straight for Nareta with nails outstretched and an intent to kill.
Nareta's heart hammered in her chest, making her body noticeably convulse. The pulsating was plain to see as she imagined her demise. The only thing that stood in the way of her and death was a short distance of nothing but air. She stared wide-eyed into the face of Armageddon, waiting for the claws to collide with her and end her life. Instead, she saw a shot of yellow electricity fly across the sky, engulfing the dog in lightning.
The Puppy Pokémon cried out in pain, but was able to regain its footing and growl at the intruder. Nareta turned to see her savior only to come face-to-face with a small, yellow Pokémon. Nareta could see the side of the Pokémon. It's black collar-fur and dark tail clashed against its tiny golden body. It seemed incredibly puny.
"Chuu! Pichuu!" it shouted, waving its stubby arms. The opponent backed off only to hear its previous prey scamper away. This angered the Pokémon, causing it to violently attack the much smaller mouse-like creature. Nareta was right beside an all-out brawl between two fierce competitors. Fire and lightning clashed against each other with neither side giving an inch. Finally, with the last of its strength, the tiniest Pokémon sent out a jolt of electricity, scaring off the much larger assailant.
The yellow Pokémon turned to Nareta, giving her a wide smile. Despite the friendly appearance of the Pokémon, Nareta shivered nervously, trying to keep away from the beast.
"Pichuu, Pichuu!" it waved at Nareta with a stumpy, chubby arm and walked up to her. Each pitter-patter of its feet against the ground made Nareta's heart do back-flips, front-flips, and flips Nareta never even knew of. Finally, once the Pokémon reached Nareta, it leapt into her chest and wrapped its arms the best it could around Nareta's neck. Suddenly, as if by some miracle, Nareta didn't feel afraid. Nareta felt safe and warm.
"Nareta!" Kyou called to Nareta, having her in his sights. Nareta grunted, hearing Kyou's voice, and turned her head to look at her father figure's face. Kyou stopped when he noticed the tiny Pokémon in Nareta's arms. He smiled.
"Oh, Nareta, thank goodness you're safe," Kyou walked cautiously toward Nareta, who had been sitting on the ground against the base of a tree.
"Kyou-sama, I was so scared. ." Nareta said, still shivering slightly from her recent encounter. Keeping the Pokémon, Pichuu, in her arms, Nareta stood up and rushed over to Kyou who proceeded to pull her into a tight hug with Pichuu right in the middle. What had been a close encounter with two vicious Pokémon had ended in a reunion between father and foster child.
