Kalin slowly entered the key for his mailbox and turned it, and the door popped open. There was only one message, which Kalin decided to open. He hoped to death it wasn't some important message his mother needed, for she wouldn't be happy if he read it. As he trailed down the page, his lazy, tired face turned into a joyful, spirited one. "Finally, it's here!" he yelled, sprinting into his house. He threw his mother the letter, who was preparing a salad, and she hastily read it as he ran upstairs. He started to gather his things, throwing in 3 sets of clothes, his pokemon info guide, and saved money over the months. He got dressed into a normal set of clothes and ran downstairs, where his mother helped him pack some food.
"Bye, mom!" he yelled, running downstairs towards his bike.
"Wait, Kalin! Take Pidgeot, she's faster anyways. Send her back when you want, I'm sure she'll keep you company until you catch plenty of pokemon." His mother suggested, to which Kalin happily agreed. Pidgeot had come as a Pidgey to their home from his mother's long, close friend. Although Pidgeot was her's, she let Kalin raise her. His mother threw him Pidgeot's pokeball, where he called her out and hopped on her back, eager to get to Professor Birch's lab and shaking from excitement. "Alright, Pidgeot, to Littleroot!"
Pidgeot had flew around Hoenn all the time. Once, she had flew as far as Lilycove City and back. As Pidgeot raced for Littleroot, Kalin's brown hair flew in the wind. His emerald green eyes were focused ahead. Kalin almost fell of Pidgeot numerous times as Pidgeot had to make sharp turns and was going fast as crazy. Finally, she stopped and landed gently, where Kalin called her back and put her pokeball in his backpack. People in Littleroot watched him, for Pidgeot was a very uncommon pokemon to have. "Thanks for the ride, Pidgeot." He slowly walked into Professor Birch's office.
"Oh, you must be Kalin!" Professor Birch said, excitement in his voice. "You're shaking all over. Well, I'm not surprised. Becoming a pokemon trainer is a big deal. There are four pokeballs left, so pick one to become your starter." Kalin looked at them, thinking. There was one that seemed to almost disappear half the time, and he liked that one, so he grabbed it. He opened it, and out popped Naforis. As he did, he noticed Professor Birch was writing things down on a clipboard. Naforis jumped around, playing with him as if a baby would. Half the time he had no idea where Naforis was. "Oh, cool, a Naforis!" Kalin exclaimed. He tried to return Naforis to his pokeball, but Naforis disappeared right before the beam of red light could touch him. "Well, okay then." He deposited his six empty pokeballs into his bag, took a Pokedex Professor Birch handed him, and ran out the door. "Thanks!"
He started walking to Oldale, as Naforis jumped around, but sat on his head most of the time. For a moment, he thought he heard a scream, but passed it off as Naforis playing tricks on him. As he walked more, he heard a second scream, and he decided that this was no trick. He starting dashing towards it, as Naforis hung onto his head, the little pokemon disappearing and reappearing and having a cute, but dangerous smile.
