In my younger days I would always just go and battle the Elite Four straight away as I would never grind for levels, it was a struggle but I guess I just used the E4 as my training.
But now I always train before I take them on, it feels rewarding training my Pokemon up for ages and then being able to match the Elite Four.
Earlier generations, I would train my butt off before the elite four. With the sixth generation, I'm already in my 50s or 60s by the time I get my 8th badge, so no need to train. ^^'
I remember having to grind sooo much to battle the first, second, and third gen Elite 4.. aah good times. I had forgotten to turn off my Exp. Share in X so I didn't have to do any grinding, but hoo boy my Y version was full of grinding since I had turned it off. ;v; So yeah, if I find myself at too low of a level— certainly gonna grind! Though a few times I've just charged in with tons of Revives and Hyper Potions/Max Potions/Full Restores heheh.
I tend to do very complete clears. I fight every wild Pokemon I come across, battle every trainer, look for every item.....I'm pretty sure I had Pokemon in the lv80-90 range when I faced the E4 in X for instance, lol.
