HeartGold hack: Refined Gold Overhaul [COMPLETE]

This is quite a long shot, but do you have any interest in making a version of this ROM hack where the female player character from Pokemon Crystal replaces Lyra? If not, oh well, perhaps someone will make an addendum to this hack someday (and it's not like Lyra isn't cool in her own right!).

Also no I don't have any such plans, but I don't mind if you prep one yourself for personal use! Handling two versions of the ROM in parallel is hard enough as is, I don't have the energy for addendum patches.

As a note: RGO v4.0.5 will be up within a few days, if anyone has seen any bugs of any kind please give me a ring on Discord or my DMs here so I can wrap that up in with the rest of the update.
Sending a picture of a Wurmple is acceptable but discouraged.

Known bugs that will be fixed in v4.0.5:
- Removed a dummy NPC from Route 1
- Fixed an oversight where you could just ignore Jasmine's Gym Trainers altogether.
- Certain variables would reset under specific circumstances, but there may be unrelated variable issues also happening so give me a shout even if you think it's just this.
Update on this, it'll be delayed just by a few days more and will be v4.1 as several major improvements and reworking of var related issues will be fully implemented.

OH GOODNESS, I did ask about this on Twitter a while ago and completely forgot about it!

I'd have no idea where to start with an addendum patch, but maybe someday I'll invest the time into swapping around some dialogue and sprites. Thank you~!
 
v4.1 is up!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are loading a pre-v4.1 save, IMMEDIATELY go to your house in New Bark Town after updating. Talk to the oven and select "PURGE PRE-V4.1 LEGENDARY FLAGS" to recalibrate certain flags which were repurposed in v4.1. Not doing so may lead to being unable to engage in certain pieces of new content.
This was originally a quick patch to get some vars calibrated, but look at this changelog!
UPDATE: updated it to actually have the oven, oops.

v4.1 - March 24th, 2025
Protector Polish
- Relocated certain variables and flags. Please visit the Oven in New Bark Town if you're loading a pre-v4.1 save. Relevant content may need to be repeated.
- Brock will now be in Mt. Moon Square until you fetch him, making Route 3 and Mt. Moon mandatory.
- Added NPCs who give you Protector, Electirizer and Magmarizer to Kanto.
- The NPC in Pal Park that gifts the Crown, Tiara, etc will now reward you for bringing a relevant starter as well.
- Added flavor text to Mt. Moon Square's shop, and changed the music in it.
- Feraligatr now learns Avalanche via relearner instead of Aerial Ace so it's at least a sidegrade to Ice Punch.
- Changed classes of a few trainers to better represent certain Battle Frontier exclusive classes.
- Rebalanced Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce.
- Rebalanced Silver's teams.
- Adjusted the Silver Multi in Dragon's Den.
- Removed a dummy NPC from Route 1.
- Fixed an oversight where you could just ignore Jasmine's Gym Trainers altogether.
- Fixed Clair's Pokemon levels.
- Fixed Eusine's Ludicolo having Rain Dish.
A lot of polish I didn't even think about went into this update, and it should... Well, some bosses are a fair bit harder now haha
Overall it should play just a little better in a lot of little ways!
I did also notice that all of the Kanto Gym Leaders between Surge and Blue have the same level for all mons aside from their ace - I thought I did that already, but I might go ahead and tweak it so it's more of a 59-61 w/ 62 ace instead of this all 60 w/ 62 ace sort of a situation. But that'd be for v4.1.1 and it really doesn't matter.

Hiya :) I am thinking of trying this out but it isn't something I can do right this second... Could you please sate my curiosity and tell me if HMs and TMs function the same as in vanilla, or if they have been changed?

Any chance that animations can be sped up? Like in platinum 60fps patches. Can something similar be implemented? The base game is just too slow man, it's maddening.

Ummm it shouldn't not work if v4.0.4 already did, but I still need to talk to someone about making it properly set up for TWM as the bugfixing finally slows
 
v4.1.1 is out! This is not the update I had in mind for v4.1.1, that's going to be pushed to v4.1.2, but I decided to make a bunch of tiny trainer changes and do some bugfixing and I'm very happy with the improvements!
v4.1.2 may not be for some time as I need to coordinate with some other people for something special, so I wanted to get v4.1.1 out so all those bugfixes and balancing tweaks are available for you all in the meantime.

For anyone playing on TWM: find the IPKE for HG in the _nds folder (there should be a folder full of .ips files), open the game (like, delete and reinstall the .NDS file into the sdcard), in the _nds folder you'll find also a subfolder in which you can see some .bin files. The latest file Is the One of the romhack.
Rename the .ips as the .bin file and patch the romhack with Lunarips.
Now the Red screens should be gone.

Interesting, I am not familiar with the TWM AP patching stuff
 
The first Lyra (or Ethan) fight is bugged. I've already done every battle with her but when passing through route 35, she reappeared and I had to redo the first fight including getting a big root after winning. This has only happened once when passing route 35 and I haven't had it happen with the other battles.

Did you just update to v4.1.1? Because this is known to happen when updating from v4.0.5 to v4.1.1 because I had to repurpose some variables because otherwise it would - under very rare circumstances - repeat anyways because the variable in use was actually used by the system.
 
Haven't seen it mentioned, but the patch requires USA rom, european doesn't work. Should put it in the documentation somewhere.

Could you be a little more specific on this process? I've wanted to play through TWM for a while now but have had to deal with red screens
