Okay. I've seen so many threads from many forums about Ash's released pokemon.
    One thing bother me is:
Why is everyone putting Charizard and Squirtle as a released pokemon!
Charizard came back on the 3rd movie, Ash battle against clair, Johto League, Ash battle against Noland and Brandon.

Squirtle Came back during Johto League and Ash's battle against Brandon.

    Charizard and Squirtle wasn't released.
Ash can called the charizific valley for charizard just like his does for his pokemon in Prof. oka lab.
    Same for squirtle.

It's a trivial matter that should be corrected if it happens. If it's not at Oak's than it's released in their minds. Most likely because he just gets rid of so many pokémon.

    Some mistake my friend.
The only pokemon he release are:
    Pidgiot
    Primeape
    Butterfree
    Larvitar
    Lapras

Remember Haunter wasn't his. It just follow him.
And took a liking to Sabrina

Wasn't Primeape to stay and train with Chuck,or did he give it to him?

That team could have helped Satoshi greatly. That's like the Pats losing Tom Brady and facing the Dolphins. Okay, not the best example but still.

They are released kind of. I mean, they are just friends I should say.

Its sad to see that many released pokemon already. It is sort of a bland "trend." It also kills the originality for future episodes to come, due to the fact its always nice seeing "forgotten" pokemon come back and help Ash win whatever he needs to win. But if he continues to release pokemon, then there is hardly a chance of seeing them return for some fresh action.

Well, Ash let Squirtle re-join the Squirtle Squad
and Ash left his Charizard at Charicific Valley for him to train happily.
So, in a sense, he did release them.

Primeape is currently training with Anthony.
Primeape would not be considered "realeased"
because Anthony offered to train Primeape for Ash, and Ash agreed.

    If you look at serebii.
you see that charizard and squirtle is on the "training" and not release part.

Thats good to hear. That creates a chance for us to see Primeape again in the upcoming anime episodes, small chance though.

In the current metagame, and in the past GBA days, Beedrill stinks it up badly. So I don't blame ash for releasing that horrible thing. XD

    LoL
Casey have the beedrill, as i recall.

You forgot that Ash never capture Larvitar with a Pokeball, so Larvitar should be considered the same that Haunter. Both were companions of Ash, but never his real Pokemon.. And Beedril doesn't count either because Ash caught it for a competition, not because hi really wanted it.
Only Lapras, Butterfree and Pidgeot were actually released. I don't think we could see Butterfre again, but maybe Lapras and Pidgeot yes.. I wait for Pidgeot in Battle Frontier, because in the Opening Ash is shown with a Pidgeot and a Tyranitar (I also thought it could be Larvitar evolved). I think I was wrong :(

I was going to post the same point. If Haunter isn't counted as a "capture," neither can Lavitar be counted as such. When Ash cared for Larvitar, he already had six pokemon on his team, so technically could not have had another "owned" pokemon. But Haunter could go either way. Though not technically caught in a pokeball, he did use it (somewhat) in a gym battle.

"Only Lapras, Butterfree, and Pidgeot were actually released." I guess the way to clarify this, is yes, they were the only ones to be released to the wild. Others would register as "obtained" in his Pokedex but has given away or traded away to other trainers, such as the Raticate he briefly traded for. Beedrill was a capture, as he got to keep it and gave it away in a pokeball, contest or not.

Battle Frontier showed many of his previous captures in the sillouette, which I thought was a nice homage to all the past pokemon he caught, which are gone but not forgotten.
