Replacing my Laptops HDD with a SSD?

countryemo, if you're still deciding or have bought your disk or whatever, I can vouch for my above method as I just replaced my Toshiba NB205's old HDD with an Intel Cherryville SSD. DD was a bit retarded and tried to read until the end of the drive anyway (my HDD was 40GB larger than the SSD), but I have an MBR so it didn't matter - even if you have a GPT partitioning scheme the partition map at the end of the drive is just for recovery purposes so it's not like your drive will kaput without it... yeah.

I'd rather just advise people on the methods that are practically impossible to screw up ^.^

You will know at christmas! I should buy it myself, but I don't have the money atm.

Maybe I went for the goods as to what's easiest at a larger scale... most PC users have less technical knowledge than IT folk have, and also faster internet connections. I saved a lot of time with my method given how slow my internet has become.

OP: I hope you get that thing cloned right. Fresh installs are unnecessary when keeping your other hardware, not to mention you lose all of your precious settings and preferences that would take ages to replicate from scratch... D:
 
So the Samsung 850 EVO is now out. Who's gonna bet that by Christmas it'll be available for a small discount? Now that the 840 EVO is old news, expect the price to fall (not that it needed any help) and/or it get discontinued (so no more new stock).

(Maybe you'll end up getting neither drive that were suggested in the opening post!)

Or maybe I wont get one at all! Haha. Didn't really know there was a 840 pro or I guess not a 850 evo. Whats the difference?
 
Lol, found a nice link for you about it, but still don't have enough posts to show it.
They mostly say the 850 is using better technology, so they have 10 year warranty for it (it's more reliable-not that 840 isn't). Also, it eats less power.
 
I got the 840 cuz it was available for $100. It's freaking awesome.

Also at OP when I switched out my borked hdd for an ssd in my Lenovo laptop, it was pretty much plug and play. All I had to do is install the OS. Not sure how generalizable my experience is though.
