So now that one of the most stressful playthroughs of my life is over, I think I'm gonna play a slightly easier game this time (but hopefully one that'll still challenge me!)
Forum Username: lillipup03
Game Version: Ultra Moon
Number of Pokemon: 6
Exclude NFEs: Yes
National Dex: No
Restrictions: No Trade Evolutions, no Ultra Sun exclusives, at least one Pokemon before Ilima's Trial (not necessarily before his battle), and no more than two Pokemon of the same type (don't count Normal/Flying as Normal type)
(and P.S. Pebblycone I'll roll you a team as soon as I can!)
Plot
Spoiler:
I was stuck in Victory Road for 9 months, but I finally escaped and it's time to take on the Pokémon League! Okay, jokes aside, back in April I was starting to get burned out on Pokémon so I took a bit of a break. With the release of Sword and Shield, I've felt refreshed and ready to go! I decided to go ahead and finish this one off since I'd like to continue working towards being an Ultimate Champion. And... I'm still terrified of Cynthia.
I spent a few hours on a long car trip grinding to get everyone to at least Level 50 (key word at least, because Katie ended up much higher...). I happened to discover an unused heart scale in my bag, so I used it to give Wobble Ice Punch in order to deal with Garchomp. Let's begin!
vs Aaron
For the most part, this battle wasn't too bad. Heracross was quite annoying because with Stone Edge, it's very risky to send Celeste out. Luckily, she was able to live with 12 HP and one shot with Air Slash because Heracross is very weak to flying.
vs Bertha
So... this is an interesting one. In the last battle, I had Wobble in front to get rid of Aaron's Yanmega with Rock Slide (which was obviously successful if I'm even getting to battle Bertha). I intended to lead with Hibiscus to get rid of Whiscash without risking Katie taking a hit... but completely forgot to switch the two. So I was at a disadvantage from the start. I didn't want to risk an underleveled Roserade getting one shot on a switch in, so I just had to do the best I could. But, that meant Medicham took a bit of damage and wouldn't have had a chance to do anything against Gliscor. Nobody else had an Ice type move, though, so it was necessary to keep Wobble healthy. Unfortunately, that meant sacrificing Maddie since she wouldn't really be able to do much against a ground type trainer. Basically, the entire battle I was behind schedule, but found a way to prevail.
vs Flint
After what happened against Bertha, I was extra careful to make sure the right Pokémon was in front. Coincidentally... it's Wobble again because STAB Force Palm plus Pure Power against a Houndoom works very well. The issue with fire types, though, is that on this team, my best weapon against Fire types is also weak to Fire, so it's always a risk to use Katie against them.
vs Lucian
I wish I could say this was the calm before the storm, but... it was far from calm. Mr. Mime set up Reflect, and considering most of my team is made up of Physical attackers, it was tough to damage them much until that time had passed. Fortunately, we also did pretty well defensively in this battle and once the screen was down, I was able to finish things off.
vs Cynthia
Oh my GOSH this is the most intense battle I've ever had. I've battled Cynthia before and as a result am absolutely terrified of her, but none of those were this close (or lucky).
To start with, everyone except Katie was around 6 levels lower than Cynthia's team, if not more. Because of this, I figured status effects and battle hazards were going to be necessary to even give myself a chance. Hibiscus did outspeed Spiritomb, so I was able to get one layer of toxic spikes up. I expected to get one shot, but Roserade survived and got the second layer of toxic spikes up, which came in clutch later. After being knocked out on the second turn, I decided to bring Katie in to set up Stealth Rocks. Although she's weak to Silver Wind, she's also pretty bulky, and it isn't STAB for Spiritomb, so I wasn't too worried. Cynthia actually decided to withdraw Spiritomb and put in Togekiss, so on the next turn I switched as well.
Putting Wobble in was a bit dangerous- her most important role in this battle is to take out Garchomp, and taking any damage before then will really hurt my chances. Here's where the luck really starts: I go for Ice Punch, and get the Freeze on Togekiss. I fully expected her to use a full restore after this, but she didn't and Togekiss fell with absolutely no damage on Wobble.
Next she brought in Lucario, which was easy. It's Aura Sphere hardly did anything to Katie, and she got a critical hit Earthquake to OHKO. Not sure if it mattered, but it's always nice to have one less turn to worry about.
Next was Milotic. I decided to switch in Celeste because I really needed Katie later on. This is where the Toxic Spikes really helped out- even though she could've gone for an Ice Beam, she kept using Mirror Coat and with a combination of Toxic damage and Air Slashes, I was able to knock it out, somehow without triggering a Full Restore.
And now... the single most important moment of the entire playthrough. Garchomp. I'm absolutely terrified of this thing, and aside from Katie, I'm not sure anyone can take a hit from it. With Wobble's high speed, though, I can outspeed and knock it out with Ice Punch, right? Hopefully? Maybe? Please?
Nope. I knew it was fast, but didn't realize it was that fast. It goes for Dragon Rush... and misses! Looking back, it's 70% accurate (during the battle, I assumed it was 95%) but it's still a lucky roll to dodge it. So, it all relies on how strong Ice Punch is. It's not STAB, but it's Physical on a Pokémon with Pure Power, and I also gave Wobble the Never Melt Ice that was sitting around in my bag just for this situation. Fingers crossed and... it didn't matter. Another critical hit! Fainting her Garchomp with a Pokémon 8 levels lower is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, considering how strong we all know it is.
Now that that's over, she still has one Pokémon left: Roserade. When it came in, it cleared the Toxic Spikes... so my question to Cynthia, is why didn't you do that earlier? You could've saved your Milotic and made things a lot tougher in general... I'm not complaining though, because Katie was able to take out Roserade very easily, meaning I'm the new champion of the Sinnoh Region, and I've also completed the second part of my Ultimate Random challenge!
