Retro Gaming Plan Thread

Here are some links to some of the past retro gaming events:

All of these seemed to be popular enough, so I'm thinking that we continue forward with this formula of having members compete for a high score in a game, where the top 3 scorers get special emblems, and all other players recieve a participation emblem.

I was taking a look, and this site seems to have a lot of good options for browser-based retro games. Unfortunately, we won't be able to embed them into the main post like some of the earlier events, but people haven't seemed to mind going off-site for Miss Doronjo's recent events. Some of the games that I could see being popular are Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Qbert and Frogger, but there are still plenty of other options available (and we don't have to be restricted to that one site in looking for games).

I've taken this To-Do list from last year's planning thread, but since we'll be going through a very similar process again, why not re-use it?

    TO-DO LIST:

    • Finalize Game to be played - DONE (Frogger and Space Invaders)
    • Main post design/rules - DONE (Posts #15 and #18)
    • Schedule/Cut-off date - DONE (running the length of the GT)
    • Create the emblems to be awarded - DONE (Posts #7 and #9)
    • Create main thread - DONE

I think I should know enough CSS to make the main thread when the GT will begin but I suck at making emblems. Also there are a lot of games to choose from : Pac-Man, Tetris, Donkey Kong, etc.. Maybe we should add more than one game for it?

I'm not all that great with CSS, but if you want to do that you can go ahead (I also have a general CSS template that we could work off of if necessary). I should have no problem whipping up a couple of emblems, so I can do that.

And I never thought about adding multiple games. That could actually make it much more of a retro gaming "event" rather than a competition. I think three would be an ideal number, as it can give everyone a wider range of games to pick from if they don't like one of the others. Plus, we could easily fit the 5 emblems as the prizes- if the same limit from last year applies (1 for each top score, 1 for being in the top 3 of any game, and 1 for participation).

If we could do something that vaguely resembles the thread from last year, I think that would work best (see here). That being said, feel free to come up with any sort of designs/layouts that you want, and we can always tweak it after.

For the actual order of rules, etc. in the thread, I would expect it to be similar to last year's as well, possibly with three thumbnails that link to the games themselves replacing where the Tetris game from last year sits.

Speaking of that, we should probably get deciding on what three games we'll actually be running. We should probably avoid Tetris, Asteroids and Pac-Man, since they had their own dedicated events in the past, but using games like Frogger or Space Invaders should be alright, as they didn't have quite as big an audience in Miss Doronjo's thread.

Here's the two winners' emblems as requested:

I don't know what to do with the other two suggested emblems. If it was one "other" emblem for each game, I could use the above emblems as a base, change the borders to silver, remove "HI-" and perhaps rearrange some sprites to make the scenes look different. Making something like a Tetris emblem would be odd if that game isn't part of this event.

Might you want to award the gold emblems to, say, the top 3 players of each one, and the silver emblems to everyone else?

I took a stab at the other two, to save Maruno some time. I like the idea that we give the gold emblems to the top three scorers, and then participation emblems for the rest of the players.

We could also use this combined one that I tried out if we'd rather not give away two emblems for just participating.

And I guess theoretically, we could still run three games under this system (one emblem for each winner, one for participation), but maybe it would be best to just stick with the two we've already got.

I'd say it's looking good so far. Of course, we might need to flesh it out a little bit to see exactly what it might look like when finished, but it's headed in the right direction.

So, are we happy with the two games (Frogger/Space Invaders) and the emblems? Just want to make sure before I update the To-Do list in the main post.

Alright, I've updated the main post then.

I'll also get working on the rules/layout of the main post, so hopefully we can plop it right into the CSS code when you're finished and we'll be good to go.

I'll spoiler this so it doesn't take up the whole page. I haven't bothered too much with the design/formatting, so feel free to play around with anything to make it look nicer, or if you see any mistakes that need fixing.

    Spoiler:

Wasn't sure if you were still having issues with the CSS, but I took a stab at what you did with your layout, and it seems to be working. That being said, the whole thing looks a little... plain? Maybe adding a simple tiled background like this one would make it a little more lively, but not distracting. That being said, I know next to nothing about CSS, and it doesn't seem to be working when I tried adding it in myself.

And before I forget to ask again, did you prefer the seperate participation emblems or the combined one? Both are fine with me, I just wanted to get your thoughts before I submitted them to the emblems thread.

I'll try to work it when I'm home later. I have almost no access to Internet now. Sorry.

That looks great, much better than the plain background (and, it still fits the retro gaming theme). Unless you can see any changes you'd like to make, I can go ahead and set up the main thread.

Oh, and did you prefer the single participation emblem or one for each game? Just need to know before the thread goes up.
