    [PokeCommunity.com] [RMXP] Pokémon Mint Green

    Introduction

Hi! I'm a one-(wo)man team working on a Pokémon game for fun. It's nothing serious; I just have quite a bit of spare time recently so I decided to do something with it, even though there are more productive alternatives. I started this project on March 4th, 2010.

The name is under consideration; Mint Green just sounds nice.

    Storyline/Plot

The story commences in the typical, "Welcome to the World of Pokémon" fashion, but the professor calls himself Maple rather than Oak, which is appropriate since the game takes place in an entirely different region ("Oren"). After choosing your name and gender, the story commences and you find yourself standing in your room.

Downstairs, your mother addresses you and explains that your father, a lab assistant of Maple's, has disappeared from his lab while working late the night before. You then go to see Maple who's filing a "Missing Person" report with a police officer. When you approach, Professor Maple explains that when your father first became his assistant, he entrusted the professor with something, saying to give it to his offspring "when the time came" (as if foreshadowing the event). The Professor then hands you your father's Eevee and a PokéGear, complete with a regional map of Oren (see below), an integrated cellphone, and a radio. Maple tells you that he feels Team Rocket is somehow involved in your father's disappearance for they have recently become active after disbandment in Kanto many years ago.

    [PokeCommunity.com] [RMXP] Pokémon Mint Green

"Your father is a talented Pokémon Expert and would be very useful to such a sinister group," Professor Maple tells you. "Team Rocket has been sighted around Algen City lately; if they have anything to do with your father's disappearance, you'll want to start your search there."

So you depart, and upon arriving in Algen City, the professor's words ring true: Team Rocket is there, terrorizing the townsfolk as in the days of old. When confronted in Mercury Cave, the Team Rocket Executive challenges you, and loses. He then departs with his Rocket Grunts to their next destination (Moroshin City, to the East of Algen), saying briefly that they'll find the Time Flute and summon Celebi no matter the cost.

It's obvious Team Rocket is planning something sinister with Celebi, but what? Is Team Rocket really responsible for your father's disappearance? And will you be strong enough to oppose them and be victorious?

    Features

    - Fire Red & Leaf Green graphics
    - A new region, Oren, complete with new cities and new events
    - The exclusion of all Pokémon above National Dex #251 (Celebi), including evolutions and new baby Pokémon (i.e. Mime Jr.)
    - Unique ways to earn Pokémon League Badges (the gyms are still implemented, but some badges are obtained through story-related material)
    - No rival; the Elite Four is not your primary objective!
    - Ability to capture all 251 original Pokémon from Kanto and Johto
    - Fun side-quests with beneficial results
    - Remixed music to add a more "upbeat" ambiance

    Demo v.1.0

I like the fact that the game start one day after your father disappeared. I think it's rather vague how you've put Celebi in your plot. It just appears in the last line, you should tell a little more why team Rocket is interested in it. Your plot seems a bit basic to me, but for some reason I like it.

You should do something about the water in the screenshot with the fishermen, it doesn't look natural. Could you post the entire maps of the towns etc. ? It would be a lot easier to criticize them and your mapping skills that way. I really like your region map btw.

I've seen Eevee as a starter in other games as well, I hope your game won't get boring because it's a bit overused.

I hope your game will be filled with tension and excitement when you are looking for your dad. make sure your dialogues don't ruin all the tension.

Good luck with your project, it's looking good so far!

I hafta fix the water; I forgot to add some things to the first post, but I couldn't edit while awaiting moderation @.@

and yeah, I have to redo the Celebi bit. I was half asleep lol .-.

I should have a demo, soon. Without the Debug option, I'm thinking it's about an hour or so of gameplay. You'll meet Team Rocket and the first gym leader in the demo.

Lemme update the first post; I forgot a few things.

    [Edit]

Added to the storyline and overall plot with Celebi; added a "Known Bugs" category

As for maps, here's two of them:

    Algen City

    [PokeCommunity.com] [RMXP] Pokémon Mint Green

    Route 4

    [PokeCommunity.com] [RMXP] Pokémon Mint Green

I do realize the waterfall has a tile bug; I need to locate the correct tile to stick in there.

I also need to fix the right wall of the river; I used a mud-wall tile, and not a water-wall tile.

I have fixed the shadow for the bridge in Algen and modified the bridge so it doesn't look so odd; the Algen City image in this post is the updated version.

It's nice to hear that you're gonna improve the plot and the maps.

May I ask why you don't want to put in all the pokemon?

Oren is a secluded region. It's only been exposed to the Kanto and Johto Pokémon; I may expand on this, and allow "Foreign" opponent trainers to use Sinnoh and Hoenn Pokémon, and you might be able to trade in-game NPCs for some Sinnoh and Hoenn Pokémon, but they're unobtainable in the wild.

(I personally don't like Hoenn & Sinnoh Pokémon, but the reason explained by an NPC in-game is that Oren is "secluded" and has yet to be exposed to all Pokémon above 251 in the Pokédex)

If only Pokémon numbers 251 and below are obtainable, wouldn't it make sense to rename the Wailmer Pail?

Yusshin I made a title screen for you, it is kinda a forest theme with trees and leaves and a Celebi I hope you like it!

I added it as an attachment!

    The Mapping is great

    @tylerab01

You made a good title Screen.

Hey! I'm liking the progress with this game! As long as there is a demo eventually, no one will care about the extras like 500 new pokemon and stuff. I'd be willng to help with mapping, just give me an idea of what you need and I'll make it.
Btw, welcome To the community yuzuki!

Thanks guys, I thought you would love the Title Screen, Ill make one for others who want one too!

As you can see, progress is slow since I'm all by myself XD but I'm getting there! No worries. I love fiddling with RMXP.

tylerab01, thanks a lot for that title screen. I fail at that :P

I'm almost done with the Rocket Event and I've done some of the main female character's sprites. Not very good, mind you, since I'm getting "inspiration" from already-done sprites, but it looks original enough. Back sprites are a different story, though.

Thanks for the compliments about mapping ^^ I still need to find that water tile, though! I've been more concerned with how to write the Rocket Event; it's not doing what I want it to lol I might have to rethink how to set it up properly.

I'll have a demo eventually; it might not be very long (an hour?) but hey, it'll be fun! :P

I'll look forward to it :). Have your maps changed at all from the versions you posted? If not, I can give you a few pointers that will help improve the overworld experience.

Nope, I haven't touched maps yet. I'm still fiddling with the Rocket events. They're being stubborn.

Criticize away lolsies but remember, I know the water and the waterfall is weird, as well as that patch of sand in Route 4. I also need to lighten up on grass patches (I've done this a bit) on Route 4.

If you're going to point out something Other than that, go ahead XD

Seems interesting enough, I'll check out the demo shortly and see if I can provide any pointers and the such.

Thanks; I always appreciate valid feedback.

    I need to sleep though, so I'll fidget with that Rocket Event later. I think I've made some progress; those sprites just don't want to vanish after the main event lol! I'm sure the answer is so simple, too ~.~;

...Well, before I forget to comment...
Because that is a city you got there, try to make the roads perfectly straight, and three tiles wide for more mobility. Because I'm sure some of those pathways will have people on them, and you don't want human traffic! ^.^ Beneath the house with the blue roof you want to make the cliffs look more normal. They look funny (unless this is intended). My biggest thing is the road system; I think when the streets are straighter, your city will look neater.
Oh, and extend the cliffs in Route 4 so that they keep going above that thin row of trees below the exit of Ivy Forest. Because there isn't a smooth way to blend the cliff into the flat ground (which I think is the look you're going for), you should either extend it or close it off and keep the player on the ground.

I hope this didn't sound too harsh XD. I mean the best!
