What do you all think was the saddest pokemon moment out of these ones that I'm listing? Did any of them make you cry? I'll just say, Sir.Aaron's painful struggle of aura related death makes me cry everytime I watch it. It grips my heart. You can either answer with the poll, or you can post a reply, or both.

You seem to be mainly referring to the anime in this thread, so it's off to Pokémon TV Shows & Movies we go! :D

I'll go with Latios's death. That one made me very sad... He gave up his life saving that city...

Misty and Brock's goodbye was also very sad. Specially misty's - she felt a lot for ash from the inside. And the song she sang that episode was just a breakthrough for my sadness...

But I really shed tears way back almost ten years ago. My tears were for ash releasing his butterfree, it really brought tears to my eyes...

I think a good many moments were sad by all accounts, to be honest. I suppose by volition I'd say Misty's goodbye and Ash's first sacrifice for Pikachu (against the filing Spearows in the first episode). I'm rather torn between them. Misty's goodbye ran me through pretty viscerally and deeply, and at the time I didn't see it coming. But Ash's inaugural sacrifice for Pikachu is one of the most critical moments of the whole series - it sets the tone for both their relationship and the series as a whole (along with shaping many of Ash's and Pikachu's characterizations).

Both the dub and the Japanese version worked well, as did the music used (it was great application of "Tears after the Cloudy Weather" in my opinion). I did prefer the theme 4Kids used as Ash was peddling away from the Spearows to the Japanese track used, though ("Pokémon Battle!") - not that the track itself was bad at all (as it's one of my personal favorites), just that it made the scene seem too upbeat (so as to probably pump the viewer to cheer for Ash) when the more sinister, saturnine, yet fast beat of the 4Kids' track worked better (and has a better connective facet when it comes to transitioning to "Tears after the Cloudy Weather" to me). I like that 4Kids' track allows the sheer tension of the scene to build towards the dire pitch that it has (but to reiterate, IMO).

Similar sentiments apply towards "Pikachu's Goodbye" - it put Ash in a moral struggle far more complex than what he has to face most of the time (IE, Team Rocket attempting to capture Pikachu or Ash just getting transiently separated from Pikachu) - to leave Pikachu in its wild and natural environment or not. It touches upon the notion of just wanting to revert to simplicity more than anything else. It's definitively a highlight and very poignant IMHO. "Snow Way Out" also comes to mind, along with "Bye Bye Butterfree" and "A Scare To Remember".

Other than that, Lucario's and Sir Aaron's deaths were also very moving and prostrating in my eyes. And while I do agree that Ash's temporary death in Movie 1 was a sad moment, to me it just felt... I don't know. Pried. Like the impact was a tad rushed and light to be had. Like Mewto only extended his emotional wings. Many cruxes in that film just felt like they were forced upon the audience rather than the characters for me. Then again, I feel that movie could have benefited largely from the Mewtwo backstory cut (which gives him so much more breathing space and background). But I feel the film did effectually show what happens when one takes hate and violence too far (as self-destructive as such can be) - it ends up affecting everyone, but even more yourself as it begins to be directed inward by nature.... well, anyway, not to be too off-topic to the thread.

That's not to say that those are the only moments in the series that I feel are dejecting - there are a good number of them, as stated - but those would be the saddest IMO. I suppose if I had to choose the saddest moment, though? I'd give it to Misty's goodbye (provided that she's one of my favorite characters). Despite that she became little more than wallpaper in the Johto seasons in my eyes, I still missed her immensely after her departure... a departure which I felt was very sad.

Yeah I remember Ash and Pikachu's separation being a tear-jerker for eight-ish-year-old-me. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Ash or Pikachu I was like, "What? No! No no no no no wait that's not how the series goes, they come all this way and then split up?!"

The song and the "Pokeshipping"-centred flashback was all 4Kids-added.

Back on topic, I am probably inclined to mention Latios's death, because this is Pokemon! Having someone actually die for real is a huge dischord as Tajiri himself said he wanted to avoid mentioning death. But the one I nominate is Team Rocket leaving Arbok and Weezing behind to protect the colony of Ekans and Weezing. The scene with Jessie and James attempting to "Fury Swipes" Tyranitar despite wearing gloves covering their "claws" is still one of, if not the most unsettling scene in the entire anime as it's one of those things that should be funny, and would be in any other situation, but here, it just adds to the depressing tone of the scene. To add insult to injury, the twerps missed seeing their noble acts. I can't believe that people would put some character's departure over this or any death scene.

EDIT: Curses, I didn't see that option there, so I went with Other.

I did bc it's what I remembered impacting me years ago. I haven't seen the Latios movie or the TR episode you mentioned, so I didn't rate them.

i was sad at so many things in pokemon...

although i thought the saddest were manaphy and may's separation, latios' death and sir aaron's and lucario's death...

For me it was Misty's departure which was saddest and I took it VERY hard. I got incredibly depressed after watching the episode and felt like doing nothing but crying my eyes out for three weeks afterward. Another thing that happened afterward was that I actually had difficulty eating the amount of food that I normally did. This actually happens to me when I go into a fit of extreme depression, I end up loosing my apatite for a period of time. Another thing I found sad but no where near as much as this was Butterfree's departure and also when I thought Pikachu was going to leave but actually came back to stay. The song featured in the episode Pikachu's Goodbye was sad but did not have much of an effect on me at all. Misty's departure played a role in my decision not to watch Advanced Generation for the most part along with other interests coming into my life at the time.

Its like the Ash's death thing. When Mew and Mewtwo get ready to fight and ash being the moron he is, jumps in front of them. I'd always cry when I was little!

Dude, chill out a little. It's just a TV show.

Anyone remember the episode in which Ash and his Pokemon get trapped in the mountains and all of his Pokemon are trying to keep him warm? That was quite the sad moment for me lol. I was young though o_o But of course that is no excuse when it comes to Pokemon the first movie when Ash almost dies...I did get shivers then XP and I always do I think. I quite like Ash as a character ^_^

(I am such an emotional girl...)

I started breaking down (there were tears) in "Hikozaru no Namida!" when Hikozaru cried before that nightmare scene. I actually cried at that scene! Dude! I am such a loser...
It is a coincedence that the episode title matches with my teary feelings...

I cried so much when May left..CURSE YOU DREW AND HARLEY!!

I also cried in "Snow Way Out"...so beautiful.

When Manaphy left, i was crying so much, I was on the floor for a bit O_o

By the way...when the heck did Phantom die??

Well, actually none other than THE TIME HAS COME, I don't think any cartoon is sad, The main thing isn't sad but only the song is sad. I was happy "Yeah, Pikachu's Gone!" Ihate Pikachu.

I Selected 'Other' as I think that when Ash set his Butterfree go in 'Bye Bye Butterfree' was a sad moment... unless we are only talking about films, in which case it'd be Latios's Death in Pokémon Heroes, or Ash's apparent death in the first movie!
