Saving Celebi [14+]

Daiyu couldn't help but laugh loudly. "He's so out of it!" She walked next to Riz and watched the Spinda as he was dragged across the ground.

Cobalt limped over with Amethyst on his back. For being a silly guy, he wasn't a bad fighter at all. Maybe if he was just less annoying and less oblivious, he really had potential.

Cobalt licked the crazy-as-heck Spinda. "Hey! Snap out of it! Everything's alright! I want to know what a portrait is!" he said. Gah, of course he didn't know what that was. I take it back.

"Hey," Daiyu started, "let's shave him." She gestured to the sobbing Ambrose. The Raichu of course, would not allow it, and would stop Daiyu before she could even try. But, she wanted to do it, and she also had to say something to deal with the sort of awkward vibe being given off.

She looked around for the Persim berries that would help painting boy snap out of it. But then, did they really have to? He wasn't very grateful when Cobalt had helped him out before...

Daiyu's stomach growled a bit, but she coughed to hopefully mask the sound. She had last eaten about two days ago. They didn't really give free food to just anyone at the village. Besides, I don't have even have a job! I'm only twelve.

Ambrose started to feel the rough terrain on his body. He was recovering quite fast now, having the world still be in a daze and blurry mist, but being able to identify certain things.

Like he was still hanging onto something orange, but looked more like a large mouse monster walking. He could also recognize the oval egg that got caught in between them. Suddenly this wet sensation was smothering him his face, being given by a black dog-like thing that suddenly was in front of him.

"H ...! Snap ....! Every…. alright! I .... know .... portrait is!" is what it said from what Ambrose could make out at the time. Portrait? Oh. Right. I said something about a portrait, didn't I?

His memory was starting to come back, and he recalled he thought everything was a painting after a while, what, with being all dobs of color.

Ambrose made a growling sound as the dog-thing kept licking his face. "Ack!" he coughed. "Quit it..." He of barely enough strength to make out those words.

"Hey," said a feminine voice. "Let's shave him."

WHAT. THAT IS UNNACCEPTABLE.
Ambrose started to really fight his dazed state and his mind was finally returning to him.

"Where am I? Who is this? Why do I have an egg?" he asked quickly right before he was silenced by another harsh cough.

"Hey," Daiyu started, "let's shave him."

Riz rolled his eyes and didn't even say anything to that, to let Daiyu know that it was a no. He shook himself free from the Spinda as soon as they had gotten out of the Mightyena camp.

"Where am I? Who is this? Why do I have an egg?" the Spinda shouted.

"Don't ask us. You insisted on bringing it along," Riz said and turned away.

Then he heard a loud growl and a cough. He turned around to see Daiyu standing there, trying not to look guilty. "Hungry, little one?" he asked. "Let's try to find other berries instead of persim then, as Teddy here seems to have awaken now. We might as well go on south as we're looking."

He motioned for Daiyu, Nova and Cobalt, with Amethyst on his back, to follow him as he started walking again, searching with his eyes for anything eatable. He didn't eat meat. Some pokémon did hunt and eat other pokémon, but he wasn't one of them. The berries of this world was often food enough, even though a nice cooked meal over fire, or fried in a thundershock, was nice once in a while.

He finally found a bush of Pinap berries! It wasn't the best, but it sure did for now. "Daiyu, come over here," he said.

[OOC: Oops, now it's fortworth96 who hasn't got a say in for long... I hope they're ok with making a POV post later. Nova seems rather calm so maybe she wouldn't have acted a lot anyways.

Also, remember to press "preview" before posting! Then scroll down to see the previous posts to make sure that nobody has ninja'd you.

And, let's find Registeel's murky hill soon :3 I see it in my mind like a huge, jungle covered hill with a cave entrance and a winding cave with lots of different tunnels in it.

aAANNd I'll be gone for some hours now. Maybe the whole night. DON'T YOU DARE get too far ahead lol]

Cobalt stopped licking him when he finally reponded. He was pleased. He had no idea what was wrong, but it was getting better now!

Hey, let's shave him," Daiyu said. Cobalt frowned at her.

"That wouldn't be nice! Would you like it if someone shaved you?" he asked. He brightened up when Ambrose Flannigan formed an intelligent sentence.

"Where am I? Who is this? Why do I have an egg?" he asked. He was stopped by Daiyu coughing. Cobalt looked at her with a worried expression on his face.

"Are you ok?" he asked her. He turned to the Spinda.
"Ambrose Flannigan! It's me, Cobalt! You're in my pack's territory! Hah! But don't worry, now that I'm the leader, everything's going to be alright. No one will hurt you. I don't know why you have an egg with you. And you're grabbing onto Riz. But you haven't answered my question. What's a portrait?" Cobalt said happily. He was glad his friend was alright. He followed Riz as he began to look for food. He spotted the Pinap Berry bush. He didn't go near it. They didn't taste very good to him.

Ambrose gave up on being aggressive in his words to interrogate the situation as whole. He was way too tired.

What's a portrait?"

Ambrose's vision finally was in perfect focus now, and he saw the dog standing over him, with this dumb happy-go-lucky look on his face. Ambrose was laid flat on the ground as the Raichu moved out of his grasp. Ambrose decided he might as well answer the dog's question.
"A por- portrait," he said with a cough, "is a painting that usually depicts a person."

He turned to look at the egg. With was black with misty red spots all over it, nothing like he's seen before. In his blurry confusion, he must have picked it up and carried it.

Ambrose finally took himself off the ground, wobbling as the blood returned to his entire body getting ready to function properly now.
"Ugh," he sighed. He finally regained enough to slightly remember what just happened and regain his sarcastic disposition. He glared at the hyena-black-dog-puppy-thing. "You stopped them? And became their leader?" this was probably the only thing Ambrose didn't believe.

"That wouldn't be nice! Would you like it if someone shaved you?" Cobalt asked. But I'm not the ungrateful cocky one, here.

"Someone seemed to have already shaved you," Daiyu replied. "Hungry, little one?" Riz asked. Daiyu's purple cheeks flushed red. She didn't want anybody to know she was hungry, but she was discovered now.

"Let's try to find other berries instead of persim then, as Teddy here seems to have awaken now. We might as well go on south as we're looking," Riz said. Looking. Looking? Oh, right. Daiyu had almost forgotten that they had an actual reason for wandering around here. They had to find Registeel. That couldn't be so hard, because Riz and Daiyu's cheeks and tail would be attracted to the Pokémon's steel structure, like magnets.

"Well, I could probably wait a day or two," she lied. "Are you okay?" Cobalt asked. "Y-yeah, no problem," Daiyu said. Riz found a bush of Pinap berries and called her over. She scratched her neck and slowly walked over to the bush, looking at the berries hungrily. Daiyu really wanted to just eat up the berries, but she couldn't. "Haste makes waste", the dumbest phrase I've ever heard.

"You stopped them? And became their leader?" Ambrose Flannigan asked. Cobalt grinned at him.

"What? It was just a question of beating the Alpha. I did that no problem! I'm very tough!" Cobalt said. He didn't bother to add that the older and more experinced Douge would have killed him if he hadn't had that scarf. Or the fact that Ambrose was also partly responible for his victory. That slipped his mind.
"Come on, Ambrose Flannigan! Let's go eat some lunch!" Cobalt said. He sniffed around for something other than Pinap Berries. Those things tasted horrible! Wait... He smelled Oran Berries! He followed the scent to the source. Perfect! A whole bush of them!

"Hey guys! I found some Oran Berries! This way!" Cobalt said excitedly. He took one off the bush and began munching on it. After he was done, he grabbed another one for Ame. He remembered that they had healing properties, and he wanted to keep one for her when she woke up.

"What? It was just a question of beating the Alpha. I did that no problem! I'm very tough!" Cobalt said.

True, to beat a pack of dogs you usually only had to beat the leader and the rest would back off. Ambrose supposed that his quick plan to use Uproar could've used some tweaks- but whatever. The moment has passed a he'd be prepared if it happened again.

"Come on, Ambrose Flannigan! Let's go eat some lunch!" Cobalt randomly said before could make an appropriate response to what the dog just said. The large puppy that was Cobalt started sniffing around for berries, even though his teammates found a Pinap berry bush.

"What's the problem with the-" Ambrose started.

"Hey guys! I found some Oran Berries! This way!" Cobalt said with pestering excitement. Ambrose decided he needed something to fully regain his strength, so it would be best to lay off the questions and eat. As the dog was feeding the small grass Pokémon that lay on his back, Ambrose ate a coupe berries. Not as good as the village's, but hey, they set a high standard.

Ambrose remembered the egg he had left behind a little ways away. He looked back, seeing it standing perfectly upright on the dirt. But from where Ambrose was before, it looked like it had inched towards the Oran bush, as if following them. Or him, specifically. Weird.

"So, Cobalt," He said to the hyperactive pooch. "You can apparently define smells. Smell that egg over there and tell me what's inside."

Cobalt looked over at the egg. He sniffed the air, but that revealed nothing. He stood up and walked over to the egg. It mainly smelled like Ambrose Flannigan, but that was because he was holding it for a long time. But there was another, fainter smell coming from the egg itself.

"Well, Ambrose Flannigan, I can't say I've smelled anything like this before. It smells like a dog or a fox. Hmm... Definately dark type like me. But... not like me. It's not one of the pups from the pack. It can't be an Absol, because they smell different too. I can tell you that it's going to be a Dark-type fox or dog. And that it isn't from around here. Also, it's imprinted with your scent. When whatever is in there hatches, it will know that you are its daddy! Congradulations!" Cobalt said happily. If Ame hadn't still been on his back, he would have chased his tail, that's how happy he was for him. So, instead he went and got another berry to eat. They tasted so good. Perfectly ripe! If the others wanted those nasty Pinap berries they could keep them!

The Spinda, whose real name apparently was Ambrose Flannigan (what a stupid name, Riz thought) and Cobalt found some Oran berries and began talking about Ambrose's egg. Riz went over there and picked some Oran berries as well, and brought both kinds back to Daiyu, who still hadn't touched the food, even though she scratched her neck and slowly walked over to the bush, looking at the berries hungrily.

"Haste makes waste," she said. Riz raised an eyebrow. Was she trying to be stupidly polite or something? He wondered what was going on inside her head. Had she lead some kind of tough life that made her afraid of accepting things given to her?

"Eat. I can tell you need it, Daiyu," he said and put several Oran and Pinap berries directly into her hand. It felt strange speaking her name out loud. Thinking about it, he didn't think he'd done that before. He gave her a light pat on the head, as if he still wanted to be a bit condescending towards her.

Ambrose shook his head in understanding as the silly Cobalt described the contents of the egg he sort of accidentally saved.

"I can't say I've smelled anything like this before. It smells like a dog or a fox. Hmm... Definitely dark type like me. But... not like me."

Dark type? Well that's interesting enough. Ambrose hadn't met many Dark types in his travels through Hoenn, minus the many Mightyenas and Poochyenas and maybe a Cacnea. Dog or fox? That sounds exactly like a Poochyena. Then again, this dog is screwy, so he might think he smells something different than a Poochyena. Ambrose started thinking of species of Pocket Monsters he could escort this egg too. There was no way he was taking care of it. Maybe he should just bring it back to the camp? What if he accidentally stole somebody's Poochyena?

"It's not one of the pups from the pack."

Well there goes that last idea.

"It can't be an Absol, because they smell different too. I can tell you that it's going to be a Dark-type fox or dog. And that it isn't from around here."

Ambrose was a bit concerned. If it isn't from around here then why is there an egg of the species, which requires reproduction and it's not like many creatures just leave their child, here? Oh well. It is a dog-thing monster, so Ambrose still could just head back to the camp and give it back. He was sure whatever it is it should fit in-

"Also, it's imprinted with your scent. When whatever is in there hatches, it will know that you are its daddy! Congratulations!"

What. Ambrose wasn't going to take care of somebody's kid! Crap, that's what you get for making yourself stupid, Ambrose. The freaking Mightyena was even smiling excitedly, and looked like it would chase its tail if not for the sleeping flower monster on its back.

But the doofy Cobalt was right. Whatever the egg hatches into, no matter how different the species or even if you were a human or not- if it got your scent thoroughly enough on it, it would think you were its parent. The only good thing about this for Ambrose was the creature inside could differentiate between female and male scents, so it wouldn't come out thinking Ambrose was its mother.

Ambrose let out a sigh. No matter where he would go, the egg would remember the scent. Even if he left it here now, the thing would be familiar and act like it was Ambrose was its father, even if it has other parents.

He didn't want it. He didn't want another annoyance in his life, especially one that needs to be taken care of.

"Yeah, it's so exciting now that I'm stuck with the thing, Cobalt. I really-" He looked over to where the egg was.

"Holy crap! Is this thing moving?!" He said in surprise. The thing was almost right next to him. Right freaking next to him. The thing was definitely feet away when he last checked, and Ambrose sure didn't move. Whatever this thing was, it sure left Ambrose unnerved. Hopefully it wouldn't hatch and eat him for its first meal while he slept.

The morning sun woke me up from my sleep like every other day. My coat was hanging from a tree branch, and my twig was in one of the pockets. Everything was peaceful and te sky was cloudy, just how I liked it. After moving my ass from my bed I decided to take a bath at the pond nearby to think, as usual. As I dived, I started thinking about all the recent happenings. Some Celebi chick appeared and many of my neighbors volunteered to help her. I never met her, but the word spreads fast in these woods. As I swam underwater, I was thinking why shouldn't I help her as well. After all, I had nothing to do and I could sure do something to kill some time. So, after leaving the pond, I put on my coat and then took out the twig and put it in my mouth. The coat got soaked, but I didn't worry, the sun would help me with that like it's always done.

When I arrived, my neighbors had set out to find some Pokémon, Registeel, or something like that. I decided to go up the tree where this Celebi chick lived. With no difficulty, I got to the top and knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" a voice answered. I told the voice who I was, and then the door opened before me. I removed the twig from my mouth and held it in between my fingers as a green thing floated before me. "Oh..." the green being said, sounding tired, and yawned, "What is it, Fizz?"

"You must be Celebi..." I said, playing it cool as usual, "I decided I'm gonna help you out. I know my neighbors have already set out to find some Registeel guy. I know you're looking for other legendaries as well...and I want to know what my choices are."

"Yeah, I am..." Celebi said, "and, um, not everyone went to get Registeel. One of them went to find Kyogre, and another one went to find Rayquaza. But there are many more...of them" She yawned again, she looked really tired. "Um, Registeel is near here...and Kyogre must be in a cavern under the Hoenn sea...and as for Rayquaza..." she said and yawned once more, "it's at the Sky Pillar...It's at the sea...but it's very dangerous..."

"Where are the others?" I asked, without changing my tone of voice.

Celebi yawned again. "Well...there's Groudon, who's deep inside Mount Chimeny." I got goosebumps just thinking about the volcano, and I think Celebi noticed. "...or you can go get Regirock, who's in a cave at the desert. Or Regice, at a cave in an island near...Dewford..." she said, sounding even sleepier.

"Okay, I think I'll go for Regirock." I said, as the volcano wasn't on my mind anymore. Celebi smiled, but not for long as she yawned again. "Thank you so much, Fizz...Is there something I can do for you in return?"

"We'll discuss that later, okay, toots?" I said and said goodbye to the Celebi and closed the door as she went back to sleep. Or at least I thought she did. Anyway, I climbed down and procceeded to head for the desert. There was only one desert in Hoenn, and I had been there. It was a matter of backtracking, and to this moment I'm good at it.

I put the twig back in my mouth as I left the forest. I saw the river that I swam to get here, I could never forget those waterfalls. I jumped into the river and let the current take me to the beach near the Human city of Mauville, which wasn't far. I didn't panic when I reached the waterfall, I had fallen off it many times while trying to get to the forest where I live now. And so I curled up in a ball and waited patiently till I reached the waterfall.

Cobalt watched the egg roll over to him with a laugh. That settled it then! But Ambrose Flannigan didn't seem to excited. His next words confused Cobalt.

"Yeah, it's so exciting now that I'm stuck with the thing, Cobalt. I really- Holy crap! Is this thing moving?!" Ambrose said. Cobalt frowned. He had just said he was excited, but he wasn't acting like it. The whole concept of sarcasm went right over the confused pup's head.

"Yeah. It moved. But I don't get it. Why do you say it's exciting, but you don't smell excited or happy. I'm confused," Cobalt said. He wondered if he should go with Ambrose Flannigan. It was clear he didn't know how to take care of a baby. Cobalt knew a little bit, considering that he helped care for the pups in his old pack right after they were born. And he would still be helping Celebi, because Ambrose was on the same quest he was. But what about the rest of them? He had agreed to go with Riz already! He didn't know how his other friends would react to him wanting to leave. But did he want to leave them? Ambrose Flannigan was very smart, but he didn't smell like he was happy to be around any of them. In fact, the only one that seemed to be as friendly as he is was currently asleep on his back! He didn't know what he should do! Should he say what he was thinking? He was sure he could help take care of whatever was in Ambrose's egg. It shouldn't be too much different from looking after the pups in the pack. But Ambrose was it's daddy! Surely he could take care of it, otherwise he wouldn't have imprinted on it!

Ambrose was eyeing the egg to make sure it wouldn't try anything funny. It had rolled over here on its own? Ghost types in eggs don't even do that. The creature inside obviously has something about it. Whether that be good or bad to others is completely up to what it was.

"Yeah. It moved. But I don't get it. Why do you say it's exciting, but you don't smell excited or happy. I'm confused," Cobalt said with concern.

Ambrose reverted his attention to the dog. This was the guy that saved him from an entire pack of hyenas? Then again, guts and brawn doesn't mean brains. At least he's catching on that what I say isn't literal. The dog was looking at the egg and Ambrose, obviously in some type of thought.

"I'm sure the concept behind the answer of that question would go over your little puppy head. I wouldn't want you to worry about it too much, we don't want you to hurt your brain with all thinking required to understand it." Ambrose started to wonder if this pup wanted to tag along with Ambrose to take care of the egg. A bodyguard might be nice, but maybe one a little less childish? Or better yet, not a child at all? This dog could barely be a teenager by the behavior he was displaying.

Suddenly, a warm feeling placed itself on Ambrose's side. He froze and shifted his view. The egg was on him. It rolled by itself for sure and was leaning on him. Ambrose took a step to his side, letting the egg drop on the ground where it was standing.

The egg shook slightly, obviously something very alive in it. It made a very slow and awkward roll and landed on Ambrose again, like it wanted a hug. Despite the freakiness of the situation that Ambrose couldn't dismiss, this was now being seen for what it most likely was; a sign that whatever was in the egg was in a very late stage of development, ready to pop in maybe a couple of days at most.

Ambrose looked over to Cobalt. Ambrose hadn't had too much experience with how eggs acted in later stages. However stupid the dog in front of him was, he was probably apart of a clan at one point where Poochyena eggs were hatched. And being as excitable as the goof was, probably couldn't help himself from playing with them. He might be able to explain this.

"You, dog." Making sure he had Cobalt's complete attention. "What is the reason for his behavior, besides it obviously being in the late stages of development?"

"You, dog," Ambrose Flannigan said. When Cobalt looked at him, he continued, "What is the reason for his behavior, besides it obviously being in the late stages of development?"

"Um... I just told you. It thinks your it's father. That egg isn't just close to hatching, it's very close. They only get like that when they are ready to hatch. Of course, that's the way it is with the pups I've helped take care of. Every pokemon is different. But when Poochyena pups are ready to hatch, they get very clingy when their parents are nearby. If that were a Poochyena egg, I would say it was ready to hatch in the next few hours or so, if that long. But it isn't so I could be way off on that one. Are you sure you are ready for this? I mean, you don't exactly look like you can handle having a kid right now. It's a big responsibility to raise a child," Cobalt said. He looked over Ambrose very carefully. He had doubts as to his abilities in this matter. The guy couldn't even take care of himself! How was he going to take care of a baby! But, what could Cobalt do? It was none of his buisiness, so by all rights, he had to stay out of it! That's simply how it was. Unless he was asked for help. Then he could do something. But the others needed him too! Cobalt was so torn!

Great. It worse then Ambrose expected. The egg was, apparently if the Mightyena was wrong and it was a Poochyena, about to hatch in just a few hours, or mere minutes. "Can't I get a break today?" he thought. Although, if Cobalt wasn't wrong in it being not a Poochyena, Ambrose should be possibly safe for another day or two. Or at least the rest of the night, allowing enough time to sort things out in his head. "This thing would think I'm its father and be clingy. Dear Arceus, what have I gotten myself into?"

Ambrose looked down at the egg heating his side. By the looks of it, the monster looked very clingy. Ambrose sighed a little as Cobalt kept talking.

"....Are you sure you are ready for this? I mean, you don't exactly look like you can handle having a kid right now. It's a big responsibility to raise a child,"

Ambrose, as fast as a bullet, directed his attention to Cobalt and wore an angry frown. Who in the bloody world does he think he is?

"How dare you," He said, approaching the Mightyena, leaving the egg to fall on the ground once more. "Are you saying I'm not capable of raising a child? Don't think you're perfectly suitable just because you took down a frightened rookie and a fat bastard of a pooch and helped me out in the process. You're just a stupid kid of inferior intelligence. You'd probably harm the poor thing and it'd grow up just to be as dimwitted as you. So you can take off, you immature puppy."

Ambrose didn't take too kindly to having his abilities in question. The only reason, in his mind, that he became in danger was because he let his guard down. Something that he'd correct. He figured that he'd just been relaxing too long and forgot his survival instincts.

The warmth returned to Ambrose's side as the egg completed its way back to the small bear monster. Ambrose quickly picked it up and directed his furious eyes at the dog. Provoking three Mightyenas in one day. There had to be some record for this.

Cobalt hadn't meant anything by what he had said, but Ambrose Flannigan's reaction both surprised and scared him.

"How dare you," Ambrose said, Advancing threateningly toward Cobalt, leaving the egg to fall on the ground once more.

Cobalt got a look of fear in his eyes, and almost started to cry. Instinct also almost kicked in, which would have resulted in him snacking on roast Spinda, but he controlled both responses at the same time. Maybe it was because they happened at the same time. Cobalt didn't know.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean it like that! And yes, I am a puppy. I'm still only 11! And you are smarter than I am, but I know a lot too! Like I know what types of food will make a baby canine healthy and what kinds would make one sick. I know how to make those foods too! I know what to do if a baby canine gets ill. I know a lot about taking care of baby canines!" Cobalt asked, a note of hysteria in his voice. He hadn't meant to blurt all that out like that, but he did. He looked at Ambrose Flannigan with sorrow in his eyes.

Ambrose shook a bit with anger at the Mightyena. This eyelids on his left eye twitched somewhat. He was actually kind of pleased when the dog went into hysteria instead of attacking him like the others did, or else Ambrose might've killed him. No need to have blood on his hands for now.

Although the hyena creature said he knew a lot about how to take care of a puppy, a tempting offer, but the fact he was only eleven completely disregarded the idea of him traveling along. Ambrose decided to cool off a bit. Best not to waste all of his energy telling off a dumb mutt.

"Look, Cobalt. You being eleven, I doubt you could even handle a child even with my adult assistance. And you got to remember that it's going to be small, and you being a Mightyena, you might accidentally hurt it. I don't want to have to cover you up killing a child. Besides, I don't want to be in charge of two kids. One that I don't plan to keep is just enough."

Ambrose turned his back and walked away somewhat slowly, waiting to see if the dog would attack him or something. He wasn't quite trusting of Mightyena anymore.

One that I don't plan to keep is just enough," Ambrose Flannigan said. He turned and walked away. He kept looking at Cobalt like he was afraid Cobalt was going to attack him. Cobaly would never do that! Abrose was his friend!

"I... I wouldn't hurt it! I never would! But... I see your point. You don't want to have to look after me, but I don't need looking after! And you don't want to keep the baby? What do you want to do with it?" Cobalt said, recovering a little bit. He lay down and watched the Spinda, unsure whether he was going to blow up on him again. Cobalt didn't want that to happen.

Amethyst groaned starting to wake up just as she heard Ambrose's voice "How dare you," He said, "Are you saying I'm not capable of raising a child? Don't think you're perfectly suitable just because you took down a frightened rookie and a fat bastard of a pooch and helped me out in the process. You're just a stupid kid of inferior intelligence. You'd probably harm the poor thing and it'd grow up just to be as dimwitted as you. So you can take off, you immature puppy."

That's not nice she thought eyes opening vision blurred as she kept listening to them.

I know a lot about taking care of baby canines!" and just by his tone Amethyst could tell Cobalt was really sorry for whatever he said.

One that I don't plan to keep is just enough." Ambrose said as the sound of footsteps walking away.

That was enough for Amethyst to hear and she sat up weakly yelling after him "So you just plan to leave a Baby all on it's own! I was right about you!"

(OOC: Thanks for making me unconscious Nideous that saved me a lot of trouble :) gave me less to catch up with after sleeping)
