[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Secret Delibird in Kalos (Y edition)

  • Chapter 9: The Final Gauntlet

After some deliberation (I thank @Arcaneum, @Devalue, and @Explorer of Time for the much-needed tips), I shuffled some movesets for the Victory Road:
    • Replaced Robin's Surf with Waterfall because Shez can't learn Waterfall;
    • Gave Shez Surf and Rock Smash (will revert to Razor Shell and Brick Break respectively once I'm done with the Victory Road); and
    • Gave Kris Strength (may or may not revert to Return once I'm done with the Victory Road -- we'll see).
Anyway, every Victory Road trip is bound to have rival shenanigans at some point. In my case, it was a friendly spar with Serena in the middle of the Victory Road. Between Corrin and Serena's Meowstic, it's Shadow Ball fest all over again. Absol, back to Shez's X-Scissor for the win. Chesnaught, I opted to try Robin's Sludge Bomb this time... and OHKO'd the thing big time. Then there's the neighbor's new mon, Altaria, who soon got 2HKO'd by Alear's Play Rough. This very same rodent also took her Vaporeon down while also avoiding the Eeveelution's Muddy Water. Granted, my Pokemon party was at, like, level 66 - 67 while Serena's was at level 57 - 61, but still...

As soon as I arrived at the Pokemon League, it's prep time. I undid all HM-related changes in movesets and gave (almost) everyone the necessary items for the last hurdle:
    • Kris: none (in case of Pickup; I'll probably give her a Silk Scarf or something upon reaching Diantha)
    • Robin: Black Sludge (he's the only one who can safely hold it)
    • Corrin: none (boosts her Acrobatics)
    • Byleth: Flame Plate (boosts his Flamethrower; I didn't have Charcoal)
    • Shez: Expert Belt (boosts his super-effective attacks)
    • Alear: Sitrus berry (for triggering Cheek Pouch instead of his usual Oran berry)
As for the gauntlet itself, since there's no fixed order for the Elite Four and Diantha, as the Champion, will obviously be the last, I've randomized the former's battle order because I just can't decide. 😅
    Spoiler: Randomizer, go!

    • Round 1: Wikstrom. Kris started strong with an Earthquake and a Brick Break against his Klefki, but that wasn't enough to KO the living keyring. Cue a Full Restore -- only then did I realize this should be the perfect time for a Super Fang. One more Earthquake later, Klefki went down. Then there's Aegislash, whom Byleth took on by alternating between Foul Play and Flamethrower, albeit not without bumping into the King's Shield at times. Scizor, well... they did pack X-Scissor but Byleth was the only one with a fire-type move at all. So yeah, back to Kris, this time maximizing Super Fang usage before finishing with an Earthquake. Probopass, Kris did a Brick Break just enough to render Sturdy pointless, then secured the win with another Earthquake. Items used: 2 Hyper Potions (1 Kris, 1 Byleth).
    • Round 2: Siebold. Alear launched a Thunderbolt on his Clawitzer right off the bat, but it wasn't quite an OHKO and the Clawitzer countered with a Water Pulse, confusing Alear. Yet somehow he powered through the confusion, eventually landing the KO-ing Thunderbolt with Full Restores wasted on Siebold's end. Gyarados, Byleth practically trolled on their Intimidate via Contrary. The dragon-serpent-fish thingy used a Dragon Dance only to backfire with two rounds of Foul Play, though not without Byleth taking a Dragon Dance-powered Waterfall like a champ. Barbaracle, Robin landed a Toxic before having the rocky barnacle run out of Stone E-- never mind, said barnacle succumbed to the bad poison right after just a Dragon Pulse. Starmie, Corrin alternated between Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt, the latter actually causing paralysis on its first use. Items used: 3 Hyper Potions (2 Alear, 1 Robin).
    • Round 3: Malva. Could've had Kris face her Pyroar but was afraid of Rivalry kicking in for the two mons being the same gender, hence me opting to have Robin sweep the lioness away with two rounds of Surf (Surf + Malva's Full Restore + Surf but with critical hit). Against Torkoal, Robin landed a Toxic and followed it up with another Surf while the fire tortoise was busy setting up with Curse. Shez then got his turn OHKO-ing Malva's Talonflame with Stone Edge. And finally, Kris 3HKO'd Chandelure with Earthquake -- well, technically 2HKO but Malva used another Full Restore before my Diggersby could knock her chandelier out. Overall, Malva was surprisingly easier to deal with compared to the previous two. Items used: none.
    • Round 4: Drasna. Byleth's Psycho Cut nearly OHKO'd her Dragalge only for a Full Restore to undo the damage. Rinse and repeat until Byleth got a crit. Alear then did a Play Rough or two at her Altaria and Noivern, 2HKO each, though not without the two retaliating with Moonblast and Flamethrower respectively. Druddigon, however, was another story. Corrin managed to land a Return but got thrown out by Druddigon's Dragon Tail which also dragged Alear out. Naturally, I switched back to Corrin, thus rendering the dragon's Retaliate pointless. Rinse and repeat but with Corrin using Acrobatics and the Dragon Tail dragging Shez out this time, then his X-Scissor landed the final blow on Corrin's behalf. Items used: none.
    • Round 5: Diantha. This time I gave Kris a Silk Scarf for a little extra oomph on her Return. Yet she's not the first one to enter the fray -- Corrin was, still itemless, OHKO-ing Diantha's Hawlucha big time with an Acrobatics. Then there's Tyrantrum whom Byleth 2HKO'd with Superpower despite Diantha's Full Restore. Goodra, I seriously can't imagine how on earth a teeny Dedenne could annoy the much bigger Goodra with two rounds of freakin' Play Rough to the point that not even a Full Restore could save them. Aurorus, Shez took them down with a Brick Break, surprisingly much easier than he'd fared against Grant's Amaura back when he was a Binacle. Gourgeist, I wanted to give Robin a chance and he didn't disappoint with Toxic bypassing the vanishing phase of Phantom Force, several rounds of Sludge Bomb, and a Dragon Pulse serving as the final blow. And finally, Mega Gardevoir. Kris managed to land a Super Fang only to be taken down by the Gardevoir's Moonblast. Oh well, Corrin had to pick up the slack with a finishing Shadow Ball. Not without surviving a super-effective Thunderbolt, of course. Items used: none.
    • Bonus round: AZ. This surprise battle happened during the parade held at Lumiose. Against his Torkoal, I switched Corrin out for Shez who OHKO'd the tortoise with a Razor Shell. She then got her chance with a Shadow Ball launched on AZ's Sigilyph. And his Golurk? Robin's Surf took care of it. Items used: none.

Yeah, that's all for my playthrough. This little team of mine gets a total score of 51 -- individual scores and my thoughts on them are in the "Party" tab of this post. And as for my Secret Delibird, I'd say it could be...

Update 8 (Dragonspiral Tower -> Route 10)

I traveled to Dragonspiral Tower, fought off some Plasma Grunts there, then likewise cleared them out of Relic Castle, then headed straight to Opelucid to fight Drayden. The only moveset update this time was Shadow Ball on Porygon-Z, replacing Psybeam after I got it via TM in Relic Castle.

On the way, I fought Bianca, and Porygon-Z set up Nasty Plot twice against Stoutland, which set up Work Up twice. Porygon-Z then 1HKOed everything, outspeeding everything but Serperior thanks to the Quick Claw. (Serperior wasted its move on Coil).

Drayden's own battle went similarly; Blaziken set up Bulk Up twice alongside Speed Boost, and Fraxure set Dragon Dance twice. Blaziken then 1HKOed and outsped Drayden's whole team with Brick Break, only taking damage from Rough Skin.

Since I fought him immediately after Drayden, I did Cheren's Route 10 battle to end this update rather than Drayden's battle. Starmie 2HKOed Unfezant, 1HKOed Liepard with a critical Surf, 2HKOed Samurott with Thunderbolt (surviving a Slash), and 1HKOed Simisear with Surf.

Victory Road is immediately ahead, so I'll likely finish up this run tomorrow.

Spoiler:

Ngl, I kinda forgot about this challenge, I haven't even beaten the first gym yet...
You can keep playing past the deadline, but you won't receive the Delibird VPP unless you manage to speedrun the game and beat Turo in the next three days. I'll also reveal everyone's scramblers on the 18th even if you (and possibly @Celèste1) haven't finished.

I don't see that happening even if I drop everything now and spend all my free time playing. Hope everyone else has had fun tho!

In that case, I will end the challenge and post results as soon as Celèste and myself finish, or the 18th, whichever comes earlier.

I'm all but certain to beat N and Ghetsis tonight (already beat the E4 yesterday night), so it's basically a question of whether or not Celèste will finish in time.

EDIT: Beat N, lost to Ghetsis. Will rematch and hopefully beat Ghetsis after dinner.

I have defeated Ghetsis. A full update will be done tomorrow Friday afternoon, but I will post my team rating first so that my Secret Delibird can see my feedback sooner.

:blaziken:Blaziken: 10/10. Blaziken was absolutely perfect, the best starter I could have asked for, and her hidden ability was amazing! I rarely if ever have the opportunity to use Hidden Ability Pokemon in challenges so getting Speed Boost was really fun! She got Bulk Up via level-up and was an amazing physical attacker even before then, even though she took a while to get a physical Fire move. Even though she had a harder time in the League, she was still really fun to play with!

:porygon-z:Porygon-Z: 8/10. Porygon2 had a rough early game thanks to a lack of Special moves and the game's latest evolution, but Porygon-Z more than made up for it after getting the Dubious Disk after the 6th gym. It was the most important Pokemon on my team against Ghetsis and carried lots of late-game battles thanks to Nasty Plot. A shame the run ended before it could learn the Normal-type special move Tri Attack and exploit its ability, though. It was also fun to use it as a new team member I've never tried before, but wanted to for a while.

:staraptor:Staraptor: 4/10. Staraptor was... the only team member I didn't care for. She might have had good base stats, but she had a very limited movepool, and was easily the most fragile member of the team. Without access to Acrobatics via TM in Gen 5, Staraptor was a worse Flying-Type attacker than Gliscor or even the non-STAB Blaziken up until the very end of the game, where I dumped all my remaining Rare Candies into her so she could finally learn Brave Bird. There's a reason I've never picked Staraptor for any team before this run. Still, Intimidate was a great ability and she was able to hold her own against non-boss trainers without being frustrating to train, so she doesn't drop lower than this.

:starmie:Starmie: 7.5/10. Starmie was amazing in the mid-game, but fell off in power at the very end. She was a fast and strong special attacker, but her lack of setup moves hurt it in the E4, and I missed out on multiple moves I would've liked because I'd have had to leave it unevolved until basically the end of the game, which would've dragged down its score lower. Still, it was still useful at the very end, as Confuse Ray was a guaranteed status effect and it was fast enough to use it before getting hit.

:gliscor:Gliscor: 9.5/10. I've never used Gliscor before, but she was amazing, and my second-favorite Pokemon to play with this challenge! She learned Swords Dance via level-up and was the most important team member in the early game, and STAB Acrobatics was a very powerful move on top of that. I'm only docking half a point from her because she can't get Earthquake until the postgame in BW1, but Bulldoze was still helpful in quite a lot of battles.

:sawsbuck-winter:Sawsbuck: 8/10. I've never used Sawsbuck before or even considered using Sawsbuck before, but even though he was only catchable halfway through the game, and dropped off in power in the endgame, he was really fun to try out. I expected him to be the team's weakest member, and initially questioned what my scrambler was thinking, but Sawsbuck was stronger than I expected and turned out to be exactly the kind of unexpected gift I was hoping for this challenge, even if he's not as strong as my status-booster trio.

Total: 47/60

I cannot make a guess since, being the organizer, I already know who picked my team.

If I didn't know, however, I would have guessed Eleanor, on the basis of her beautiful signature quote about birds and flight. My team has three birds, one of which flies (Staraptor), one of which floats (Porygon-Z) and one of which is flightless (Blaziken). In addition, I have a Gliscor, which is a non-bird that flies. It's also a very well-done team and obviously from someone who understands challenges, but by someone who I've never told that I don't like Staraptor very much. Sawsbuck also feels like the kind of holiday-related Pokemon that Eleanor would pick.

But I know for a fact who my Secret Delibird is, and it's not Eleanor. Not-Eleanor, you do not need to feel bad that you missed an opportunity to be guessed and win the bonus points. I would not have guessed it was you.

Update 9 (Victory Road -> N's Castle)

I made it through Victory Road, with Starmie 1HKOing Terrakion with Surf along the way, and made my way to the Pokemon League. I used all my remaining Rare Candies on Staraptor to get her Brave Bird, but nobody else had any moveset changes before the League. Together, we beat the Elite Four, only to find that N had already beaten Alder and become Champion!

We went into N's Castle, where the Light Stone I found and failed to activate transformed into Reshiram, who found me unworthy because of all the times I lied across the run (most notably pretending to have picked Oshawott to get a Mystic Water, and pretending I wanted a Water Stone to evolve a Panpour and actually using it to evolve Starmie), and decided to take N's side in the challenge, alongside the Zekrom he already had! Quickly thinking, I through a Quick Ball at Reshiram and trapped it before N could command it. Reshiram would never obey me because of my dishonesty, but catching and boxing it would still deny N a second Legendary Pokemon.

Then, the battle began, and my team barely managed to defeat his, with only a single Pokemon standing at the end. Then Ghetsis fought me, and I lost the first battle because I had the wrong lead, Gliscor to counter Zekrom when I needed Porygon-Z to counter Cofagrigus. I still took down his Cofagrigus, Hydreigon, and Bouffalant in his first match, and on the second try, I was able to fight him directly with the right lead, without a back-to-back battle with N, and triumphed just a few days before the deadline.

Grimsley: I fought Grimsley first, leading with Blaziken. I set up Bulk Up against Scrafty, only to be hit by a crit Brick Break right off the bat. I healed with a Hyper Potion, taking a non-crit Brick Break, and then Bulked Up a second time, but had Blaziken's accuracy reduced with Sand Attack. Blaziken then 1HKOed Scrafty with a Brick Break of her own, but Grimsley switched to Crookodile, dodge a Brick Break, and 1HKOed Blaziken with Earthquake.

I switched to Starmie and 1HKOed Krookodile with Surf, then brought Bisharp down to half health with Surf again before being 1HKOed by Night Slash. I switched to Sawsbuck, and she KOed Bisharp with a quadruple-strength Jump Kick. Grimsley switched to Liepard, which did more damage to itself from Rocky Helmet recoil than it inflicted with Fake Out, then hit Sawsbuck with an Aerial Ace. Sawsbuck then retaliated with a critical Jump Kick, winning me the match.

Marshal: I fought Marshal next, leading with Staraptor, and started off by 1HKOing Throh with Brave Bird. Staraptor then triggered Sawk's Sturdy with Brave Bird, as it missed with Stone Edge. Marshal then used both his Full Restores on Sawk as Staraptor brought it back down with Return until she finally 2HKOed it. Staraptor then 1HKOed Conkeldurr with Brave Bird, but fainted from recoil, and I sent Gliscor out to take down Mienshao. Mienshao flinched Gliscor with Rock Slide, hurt her with a Jump Kick, then nearly KOed her with another Rock Slide, but Gliscor 2HKOed Mienshao with Acrobatics.

Caitlin: I tried having Gliscor set Swords Dance, but Reuniclus put her in the red on Turn 1 with Psychic, then she failed to KO Reuniclus and got finished off by a Focus Blast of all things. I switched to Blaziken, KOed Reuniclus with Fire Punch, then hit Musharna with another Fire Punch before she got 1HKOed by Psychic.

I switched to Porygon-Z, set Nasty Plot as it got put in the yellow by another Psychic, and KOed Musharna with Shadow Ball. Porygon-Z then outsped Sigilyph thanks to the Quick Claw, and 1HKOed it with Thunderbolt as well. Then, it nearly KOed Gothitelle with Shadow Ball before being taken down by another Psychic. I switched to Staraptor, Caitlin healed Gothitelle, and I 2HKOed it with Brave Bird.

Shauntal: I saved Shauntal for last, but she turned out to be the easiest of the E4. Porygon-Z set Nasty Plot twice, getting reduced to 47 HP by two Psychics from Cofagrigus, then outsped and 1HKOed everything with Shadow Ball.

N (Champion): I led with Gliscor, setting Swords Dance as Zekrom set Light Screen. Then, Zekrom hit Gliscor with a Giga Impact, a mighty move that would shake the very foundations of N's Castle, but fail to KO Gliscor. This forced Zekrom to skip its next turn, and Gliscor used Bulldoze twice to put Zekrom in the red and lower its speed. I expected that N would heal, so I set Swords Dance again while he did so. Then, Gliscor hit Zekrom with a Bulldoze, dodged a Zen Headbutt, and finished it off with yet another Bulldoze.

Shocked by the loss of his Legendary to a single non-Legendary Pokemon, N switched to his Vanilluxe, missed a Blizzard, and then Gliscor KOed that too with an Acrobatics, boosted by my only Flying Gem. Then, he switched to Carracosta and KOed Gliscor with an Aqua Jet. I sent out Sawsbuck, hit Carracosta with a Horn Leech that reduced it to 26 HP, but he nearly got KOed back by a Stone Edge. Sawsbuck finished off Carracosta with another Horn Leech, and N switched to what appeared to be a Klinklang.

This "Klinklang" used Flamethrower, a move that a real Klinklang could never learn, to KO Sawsbuck. This left only one explanation... it was a Zoroark! I sent out Blaziken, and she dodged a Focus Blast to 1HKO said Zoroark with Brick Break. N switched to his actual Klinklang, and Blaziken 2HKOed it with Fire Punch, getting hit by a Metal Sound that would be useless as N's last Pokemon knew no special moves.

That last Pokemon was an Archeops, and Blaziken hit it with a Brick Break, just barely failing to knock it below half health and trigger Defeatist. Archeops then 1HKOed Blaziken with Acrobatics, 1HKOed Starmie with Crunch, and 1HKOed Staraptor with Stone Edge, though Staraptor at least lowered its attack with Intimidate. I switched to Porygon-Z, survived a Stone Edge thanks to Intimidate, and 1HKOed Archeops with Thunderbolt to defeat N.

Ghetsis: I lost my first battle thanks to having Gliscor as my lead against Cofagrigus, the best choice for a lead against N but possibly the worst lead in this battle. The second time, I was able to have Porygon-Z lead as I wanted, and it set up Nasty Plot twice despite getting hit by Toxic on turn one. Cofagrigus used Protect on turn two, as expected, so on turn three I 1HKOed it with a +4 SpA super-effective Shadow Ball.

On turn four, Porygon-Z's Quick Claw activated and it 1HKOed Hydreigon with a Signal Beam, and it then nearly KOed Bouffalant with a Thunderbolt before fainting to a Wild Charge. I switched to Sawsbuck, and hit it with a Return as Ghetsis used his only Full Restore this battle. Sawsbuck hit Bouffalant with a Jump Kick, then Bouffalant fainted both Sawsbuck and itself with a Head Charge.

I switched to Starmie against Seismitoad, and confused it with Confuse Ray while it set Rain Dance. The rain helps Starmie 2HKO Seismitoad with Surf, and it hurt itself in its confusion instead of doing anything. Starmie then wounded Eelektross with a Surf before being 1HKOed by a Wild Charge. I switched to Blaziken, and accidentally used Fire Punch instead of Brick Break because I stupidly forgot the rain was still going for another turn, and it failed to KO. Eelektross then 1HKOed Blaziken with Acrobatics.

I switched to Gliscor, finished off Eelektross with a Night Slash, then hit Bisharp with two Bulldozes before going down to two Night Slashes from Bisharp itself, one of which criticaled. I then switched to my last Pokemon, Staraptor, outsped, and won the challenge with a quadruple-strength Close Combat.

Thank you all for playing and thanks to Explorer of Time for organizing and managing the challenge ♥

At great risk of looking foolish, I'd like to change my guess at the last minute. I don't think this comment was directed at me, but the name Arcaneum comes from arcane, and I don't see anything mysterious on my team. I know it's a long shot, but I'd like to change my guess to Eleanor based on the fact that she's actually posted about some of my party members. If it turns out my original guess was right, then... well, won't I look silly!

Understood, and will change your guess.

Also, as I'm reviewing the scores for the final results, it occurs to me that there's a potential tie. If Arcaneum's guess for Eleanor is correct, nobody with a higher score makes a correct guess, Celeste doesn't finish at the last minute with a near-perfect rating for her scrambler and/or a 45.5+ point correct guess, and Arcaneum was also Eleanor's scrambler, we will see Arcaneum and Eleanor tied with 57 points each.

A tie is also possible if Celeste gives her scrambler 53 points and nobody gets their scrambler guess correct (which would be very embarrassing for all of us, I know), or if Celeste gives her Secret Delibird 55, 56, 57, 57.5, or 60 points with someone else getting guessed or guessing correctly, and Saniachan's and Cyddeon's scramblers missing their bonus points, or Celeste guessing correctly and giving an identical point value to anyone who scored the 12 bonus points. This includes a potential 3-way tie with Arcaneum and Eleanor.

For tiebreaker rules, my preferred way to do this is for the tied winners to fight each other in a Pokemon Battle on Pokemon Showdown, using the teams that were picked for them in this challenge. Movesets, natures, IVs, EVs, et cetera can be changed to anything legal, to make it fairer, and the generation used will be the higher of the two used in the tied players' games. This would be Gen 5 in an Arcaneum vs. Eleanor battle, for example. A replay would then be downloaded and posted on the forum as proof of victory. In an Arcaneum vs. Eleanor vs. Celeste's Scrambler tie, we would have a round robin set of three 1v1 matches, and move on to the secondary tiebreaker rules if everyone wins and loses one of the two matchups.

If this is not possible due to scheduling concerns, or a three-way Showdown tie, the winner will be the scrambler whose team's lowest-rated Pokemon had the highest score. In an Arcaneum/Eleanor tie, Eleanor's lowest-rated pick would be Arcaneum's Blastoise, rated 4/10, so Arcaneum's lowest-rated pick would have to be a Pokemon rated above 4/10 to win. A similar process would take place for a Celeste-related tie. If it is still tied, and one person made a correct guess while the other didn't, the correct guesser will win. If it is still tied after that, the winner will be the player who finished their game first. The "completed" section in the OP is listed with earlier winners first, so whoever's higher-up on that list would win in any tie that reaches this final level of tiebreaking.

(This post should not be taken as evidence of who picked what. I don't quite remember who picked who's teams, and don't plan to reread my notes until after the deadline.)

I totally agree with the showdown match if there is a tie, that would be awesome to watch

It's unlikely that there will be a tie, so don't get your hopes up. It would require a specific combination of two specific people being each other's scramblers, or Celeste1 finishing her run in the next four and a half hours. The deadline is 5:00 AM in Germany, so it would likely have happened by now if Celeste was on track to win.

Yeah, not a high probability, but that it would be really cool, that's a fact!

Celeste has PMed me and told me she has five badges now, and that she's going back to sleep. Celeste also guessed Eleanor as her scrambler, even though she can't earn points this way since she hasn't finished her game. The event is, effectively, over, though I'll still wait an hour and a half for the deadline in case anyone else wants to change their guess at the last minute.

Now's the part where I apologize to JanP. I completely misunderstood the assignment of team-building. I thought I should pick a team that would make it easier for me to guess, so I picked a "sort of kind of" monotype team of dragon-type Pokemon and dragon-adjacent Pokemon. In fairness, I didn't know what everyone else was picking, but if I had to do it over, I would've picked a completely different team. I'm sorry.

Also, I'm completely blindsided by the fact I was given a team by someone who didn't participate in their own challenge. I don't want to throw DragonEye under the bus, but uhhh... you know, it was surprising after he completely dipped.

I'm still formatting a more official-looking post to rank everyone, but everyone's scramblers are revealed on the front page now.
