Swear censors are a whole different ball game, and while I don't want to get into it too much, I'll run through a few things quickly. Objectively, I can't see much wrong with a filter toggle so long as we remove the censor bypass rule (for some words, I'll get into that below), and keep the filter on by default.
I think the main reason we've had a swearing filter since the dawn of days was purely to promote a positive atmosphere. That, and there's a lot of derogatory words which have no place on PC, you know the ones. Thing is, it's hard to have a toggle for some words, and not others. People dropping the occasional F-bomb or using an urban-thesaurus for the word "poo," doesn't concern me much. However, the case is that there are a lot of words that are seen as offensive without being directed. Words that are insulting to minorities, races of people, and so on.
If we can have a toggle for a list of pretty much harmless words, and always keep derogatory ones censored, then I'd be okay with that. Naturally staff would infract/warn members for using derogatory terms so we could go ahead and make all words uncensored, but the case is, I'd rather not see racial slurs being visible at all. So if we can split the filter, for words that are able to be toggled on or off, and keep certain words always censored, then that'd be sweet. However, it's a tricky affair.
Though this discussion on swear filters is pretty off-topic, and perhaps warrants its own thread. Bottom line is, I'm happy with seeing a toggle for the censor, so long as certain derogatory terms and racial slurs always remain censored.
