sorting pokemons in roles

how do you determine if a pokemon can belong as a supporter for your team?

**edit** also...where could i find info about metagaming?

.where could i find info about metagaming?
lol.
Finding out about the metagame? Do you mean as in what Pokemon are hot and what are not? Or don't you know what the metagame is? Well, you do know about Shoddy Battle, right? It's an online Pokemon battle simulator... And the whole metagame exists whithin smogons server (no, the official server does not count). If you want to learn more about battling, visit smogon.com or just lurk the RMT and Battle Log sections ;)

And to answer your question, a support pokemon is pretty much anything which can support the team with something, and has the bulk to take more than a few hits. A good example is Vaporeon, which is commonly used as a "Wish passer", meaning it uses the move wish, switches with a pokemon who needs the health, and when the said pokemon comes in, it restores 50% of its health. A support pokemon can also set up screens, ie Barrier and Reflect to benefit the whole team.

I hope you mean Light Screen. Barrier is merely +2 Def and +Def moves should not be passed outside of a Baton Pass Team.

I'm sure there's a guide somewhere on the internet detailing the differences in the Metagame. Or look up a team building guide aimed at newer players.

A supporter is basically any pokemon that can assist your other pokemon in achieving their goals. This is usually done by passing Wish, setting up Light Screen/Reflect, passing Subsitutes or Atk/Spd boosts. Even laying down Spikes, spinning or spreading status can be thought of as Support. Their is no real effective Supporter that purely helps teammates, you want to spread these moves around your team, where possible.

Sorry for the total lack of structure there.

on shoddy i ev'd dragonite's atk to 252 and the stat was 403, i changed its nature to adamant(that nature gives plus atk)and it was still 403, so in game (D/P/P) does nature really matter explanashun plz

ty in adv

That's because on Shoddy, before you change anything, the nature is set to Lonely, which is also a +Atk nature.

making a team

As a begin in making a team for WIFI battles, should u immediatly choose what tier I should base my team on or should I mix everything up?

If I should go into tiers, what is the diffrence of team making between OU and UU?

:cer_confused:I'm sooo confused and lost...

The tiers govern which Metagame a pokemon can be legally used in. You really have to make a team of all one major Tier if you want to use it.
Uber Tier - Any pokemon aside from Arceus can be used. Any Uber Pokemon are banned from lower Tiers
OverUsed Tier - Allows pokemon from OU, BL, UU, NU, NFE.
UnderUsed Tier - UU, NU, Certain NFEs

Each Tier is essentially banning the pokemon from any tiers below it. The tier order, from top to bottom, is:
Uber > Over Used > Borderline > Under Used > Never Used > Not Fully Evolved

If you want to start in OU, you would want to use mostly OU and BL Pokemon, although nothing is stopping you from using anything in a lower tier.

I do understand that part really clearly, what my question is:
What type of battles is there in there tiers? is it more a free for all, more support, defence=best offense, etc
I wasn't in the pokemon games since RBY...so I don't know anything that happened between RBY and DP, I don't know the moves, new pokemons, items, natures, abilities...
In other words, I never steped into the wifi world yet...except for trading.
I tried shoddy once and got pawned in less then 5 minutes.

Well, you generally learn about most things from ingame gameplay. Most abilities you learn from just beating the ingame storyline. If you ever have any kinds of questions, you generally check with some good resources. Some sites you should bookmark: *link removed*. If you have any questions on abilities you've seen on any pokemon, just check em out here. Also provides crucial ingame info such as how and where to evolve and catch certain pokemon respectively.Smogon's site. This site has some good movesets for each (fully evolved) pokemon for use of competetive battling. However, the resources there are mostly outdated to D/P although Platnium changes are slowly being made. Use their sets as guidelines, and never mimic them or you'd be too predictable. Psypokes site. This site has good info and resources like an IV calculator and useful articles anyone could use. Serebii's 'dex. An alternative to Marrilands, but Marrilands is still more user friendly. Currently down. As for types of battles, it's all singles in shoddy. Although on WiFi, there are some competetive double battles going on but these aren't as heard of as singles. A standard game allows use of Pokemon from any tier except uber. A UU match consists of nothing but UU pokemon and some NFE's. As for BL, there are no real BL exclusive matches, but you might get lucky one day. As for tiers, just click *smogon.com link removed*. If you're just getting into competetive battling, try reading the PC Compiled Guides sticky. Now, I have a question. Scenario: Your epic Mawile with Hyper Cutter has just used Swords Dance, but the other guy sends out a Golbat and uses Haze. Will Mawiles stats reset?

skyt: Its all a mixture of offense and defense. I think UU is a little bit more defensive, isn't it?

SkyPioneer: Hyper Cutter is ignored when Haze is used, so Mawile's Attack stat will return to normal.

What makes a good Bullet Punch Scizor counter?

Heat Wave Zapdos (will need Def EVs though or it takes ~50% from BP anyways, ass that to SR and maybe SS and...), Gyarados, a very defensive Salamence (all versions work but they take a lot of damage), Scarf Magnezone (can take a beating from the fighting attacks but is usually a good bet)...

Anything faster that can resists Bullet Punch is usually a good bet. If your opponent is a really good predictor, stuff like ScarfTran will be more risky but generally is good enough.

Also Scarf Nidoking rofl

Well, I'm back. While gone, I started to play Emerald again, collecting Pokemon for the Battle Fronteir. I haven't beaten the game yet, but I have found one ok BT pokemon. However, I need to know:

Is 3rd Gen Hariyama any good in the Battle Frontier?

Im actually using that currently and yes it does work for me, however not being able to get Hidden Power Ghost is really meh =/

Oh and adding on to what anti said Heat-Rotom and (Scarf)Fire Punch Jirachi are great scizor checks =], well actually scarf Jirachi keeps the metagame in check at least thats how it seems as of late x]

Another question 0.0. When Weezing switches in on Toxic Spikes, does it absorb them due to its Poison typing, or does Levitate block that from working?

I'm 99% sure it won't absorb them since it's a flying pokemon and isn't affected either way. I'd double check though (it's probably on Smogon or serebii or something).

Nope; I remember once I had TSpikes on my field, and when I sent in Gengar, he didn't absorb them.

Pretty much, levitate comes before the poison typing so it doesnt absorb them.

Fun Fact : - Floating poison types absorb T-Spikes ONLY if they are equipped with an Iron Ball (But yeah dont do that lol =/)

I'm going to poke my (fat) head into the new UU. I was jusst wondering what I need to watch out for as in overpowering sweepers, common leads, and the top walls.

Top threats are things like Gallade, Magmortar , Blaziken , Zangoose , Feraligatr is nasty too sometimes, Raikou, Azumarril and strangely Lickilicky too (i had problems with the mix set), in addition Shaymin, Moltres, Staraptor, Roserade (scarf/ specs and spiking versions), sceptile is also annoying. Obv stuff like Slaking and NP Houndoom (although ive only seen like 3). Oh and Mismagius....

Ive seen a number of rain dance teams too, especially with things like Sub Seed or offensive Ludicolo <---I honestly hate the thing lol. Stall is common too from what ive seen. But i think people are just trying to find out what works the best in all honesty lol. Ive tried both stall and offense, but i still prefer offense...

The regi's and spiritomb seem to be on every team in regards to walls (especially calm mind and rest talk versions of tomb), uxie is reasonably common too, sub roost Moltres is annoying, especially with spikes and t-spikes support. Ive seen a few Milotic who are a royal pain to get rid of, especially rest talk toxic surf ones =/. Ive seen a few Tangrowths and Slowbro's too =]

Common leads are mainly trick ones and the taunt +<spike move> ones. Ive seen quite a few suicide Nidos and Spiking Froslass. Couple of Aboma's here and there and strangely a few sash Hippopotas @___@...

I think ive covered most things. If anyone wants to add stuff feel free too.
