    I just noticed my computer seems to be running slower ever since yesterday. I haven't downloaded anything and I even did a virus scan to check.Anyone know why my computer is slowing down so much?
     
    Maybe it's too hot an it overheated? I dunno.. there could be billions of possibilities. Maybe you should try defragmenting every once in a while, like 1 month? No one ever does that, and they always say "my computer was faster when it was new" and that kinda stuff. Or maybe it's spyware... or maybe you installed a new program thats running some "hidden" service you don't know about.. or maybe.. a spider got into a small hole and short circuited your MotherBoard like what happened to my oldererest computer? meh~ just possibilities..
     
    Already defragmented it. I do it every 2 months or whenever Norton WinDoctor starts giving me a op-up eery 5 min saying my computer is too fragmented. I don't have anything to check for spyware. Where do I get that stuff?

    And for the overheating thing, one of my motherboard fans can check the temperature of the inside of the computer and displays it on a second part of the device which is in those places where you put CD drives and stuff. The highest it's ever been is 31 Celcius. I don't know how hot that actually since I only know Fahrenheit.

    EDIT: Just did a free spyware scan. I have about 21 Spywares on my PC, 8 of which were considered 'dangerous'. So I have to spend 30 bucks to remove them...BAH! Odd thing is, my internet conenction has been faster while my computer is slower. Does that make sense?

    Um.. Don't be fooled! Pay no money at all.... Whatever you used theres better. The best two apps out there are "Ad-Aware" and "Spybot - Search and Destroy". They're both free and work well. I recomend you get both since sometimes one misses a spyware or two.
     
    COuld you give me a link to both? I searched for them but almost all of them have the name Spybot in their name and isn't free.
     
    I downloaded it, spent 30 seconds installing and downloading updates; about one minute killing SW/AW files. 134 (64 AW, 70 SW) Total. I deleted the backups for the heck of it. I'm just hoping it doesn't kill my computer anytime soon...but it's working right now so I'm guessing their removal didn't do anything.

    Now I have another question. Where are the files for Internet Cache placed? Norton Cleansweep-Fast & Safe Clean Up keeps on 'cleaning' my computer but about 120KB total from 3 files are always left remaining in the Internet Cache. I keep on 'cleaning' over and over again but those 3 files always stay. Since the Ad/Spy Ware and the Virus Scan didn't find anything on that, I'm assuming and hoping it isn't bad. But I still want to check to make sure. I've been searching (manually) files in my computer in the WINDOWS directory for any folder with Internet Cache in it's name but I have not found 3 files adding up to 120KB yet.

    EDIT: And uh...how hot is 40 Celcius when converted to Fahrenheit? My computer just reached that temperature and is going back and forth between 38 and 40 Celcius, highest ever. It's been on for 5 hours, but I've had it on for 72 hours in the past and it only stayed around 26-29 Celcius.

    EDIT 2: Nevermind. I found a temperature convertor on the internet. Well it's 31-32 Celcius now (what a drop...and all I did was take my RA2 CD out...and it was kinda hot). That's 89.6 Fahrenheit according to what the convertor said. Is that too hot for a computer?

    It's gonna get hot, naturally if you leave it on. If you don't have sufficient cooling it could be a problem. 40?C is 104?F. It's not that bad, so don't worry. Never let your Processor go over 52?C and your Motherboard over 32?. This could wear them out....
     
    Wear it out? So does heat affect a PCs' performance? Does having more fans in a computer help with cooling?? If it does...I don't think I can install anymore. There were only 2 openings in the side of the case for cooling fans and I used them both already. There's this part on the back near the IDE ports where there are a bunch of little holes...I could put a fan there but there's nothing to keep it in place. Plus that part is being used by the fan on my motherbaord to check tmeperatures. I don't know why it needs that part, but that's what the manual said so whatever. *rants on...*

    Dude, I used to have my Thunderbird up just touching 100? Celcius during Summers, and it never had any issues.
    Heat won't kill PC componants.
    As long as the temperature is stable, it wont have any effect upon it.
    So it is infact better to leave your PC running 24/7.
    Voltage will however cause issues. Extra voltage will cause Silicon Migration.
    Which is bad.
    As long as you don't overclock on voltage, you can never damage your PC componants through regular use or 'overuse'.
     
    100??..... um.. why do I get the feeling you may have exaggerated that just a little bit? I'v never, ever heard of a processor running past 74?. I doubt it would have been stable if it was that high.

    Maybe "wear out" was the wrong term to use there. Hot components do run slower. And yea, heat WILL kill PC componenets if you go too far. Too many times have I heard of a processor overheating and frying after a little overclock.

    demonchaos916, ignore everything I said about heat. I doubt it's an issue. It never really is unless you built the system yourself. If they're pre-made, they've obviously been tested in the most extreme conditions. 1 other thing, if your Hard Disk runs at 7200 RPM, it needs cooling. This might sound silly, but the new 7200 RPM (and faster) Hard Drives have a hard time working in hot conditions. The Read/Writes heads will move a lot slower, and it will cause a lot of read errors. The hard drive does wear out and will die eventually if it's not cool. I'm not making that up either, do some research and you'll see. But besides that, ignore all the heat stuff. I overclock my hardware, so thats why I'm always cautious, but if your just running a basic system, then I suppose it's all ok.

    About the Win98SE boot disk thing -- My Win98SE CD worked as a boot disk for me. I put it in, and it would create a "Z" drive (Z:\). From there I would enter the setup file from the Z:\ and so on. a1337a, I dunno why you said it wasn't.. maybe I have a newer, better version?.. meh~ I got it in 1999, thats all I know.
     
    You've clearly never ran an Athlon Thunderbird C.
    The 133mhz FSB (Uber Fast at it's time) combined with the unlockable multiplier, and easily modifiable core voltage meant you could wind them up past the 1.6Ghz mark, with a load temperature of around 80?. On a hot day, with the ambient well over 35?, it was quite common to have the CPU hit 100?.
    Maybe you're just not familar with the Thunderbird series. I could let that slip, but you say you've never heard of a CPU above 74?? Well the latest Precott runs at 80? at STOCK speeds, so that just shows that you've really no grounding in the world of CPU temps :)

    That's nice. How do I find out which version USB ports whatever I have? I'm planning on getting and iPod and it needs USB 2.0 for it to conenct to my PC.
     
    You've already made a thread about the iPod.
    Keep questions regarding it to that thread.
    The "Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus" tree should give you some insight as to your USB type though.

    I'm not new to the world of CPU temps at all, I just don't expand my knowledge beyond Pentium 4 Northwood and Athlon XP series of CPU's.(I only have access to these 2 to play with) The Prescott is still new, and I have no knowledge of it at all, apart from that fact that it's not worth buying... yet. It's not that much of an improvement to the Northwood.And no, I didn't know it was the voltage that kills it, so thanks for teaching me that. :P
    Btw, That 74? was a typo, it was actually 84?*. It was during an online game with 30+ people. I think it went higher, but the threshold was at 84?

    The CD, wasn't an OEM edition. Please don't ask, it just happened that way, K? Maybe I got some counterfeit that was hacked or something, but it worked. Thats all I know.

    About the Hard Disk thing --> I read 1 article about it, and did some research and found many more. But if you say so, then I have to believe you, no? you seem to know what your on about :P

    I live firmly by the concept of 'prove me wrong and I'll eat my words'.
    But this is my realm, and I usually tend to know a little about what I'm talking about. And if you, and others, can learn something in the process, all the better ^_^
     
    Well you've have 5 years to live more than I have.. I wouldn't be surprised if you know what your talking about. I just hate it when I'm proved wrong when I think I'm right. Not in a "Oh, I'm way better than you" sorta way, but it sux for me to be wrong when I was almost positive that I was correct. Don't worry, I'm not one of those people who state things without doing any research and saying it because they feel they're right, I usually do know what I'm on about. But hey, kinda like you, if you can prove me wrong I'l take it back anyday, no harm done.
     
    I was gonna say defrag & uninstall any unnecessary programs, but yeah, all that works too.

    Gosh, you guys have such nice computers. All I have is a Compaq 1.2 GHz AMD Anthlon & 128 MB. Come to me my AlienWare PC. o.o
