Hello everyone, I wanted to post this here instead of in the capture release thread as it didn't go with the topic. Before we get started, please be nice to each other as this episode is possibly banned because of a controversial reasoning.

Recently people have started to see that the Passimian episode where Ash dresses up like a Passimian has been banned in the dub. I asked Joe Merrick and he also says it seems like it has, however he is waiting for confirmation in case the order of the time the episode is played is just messed up.

The reason this was possibly banned is because Ash dressed up like a Passimian. When he does this, he paints his face black and this is probably why it was banned, if it is banned and not out of order.

This method of acting was once called "Black-facing." it was where white actors would paint there face black in order to play as a black person in theatrical plays. This method was later retired in the 1960s due to the Civil Rights Movement.

Remember it has not been completely confirmed yet that this episode was banned and could be out of order. However, I don't know why it would be out of order unless something happens in the episode that is possibly frowned upon because of the Volcanic Activity currently going on in Hawaii.

Please be nice, I just wanted to post this to explain why this episode was banned.

If its the "Black Face" reason, it's complete and utter BULL$#@! for it to be banned because I didn't get offended by it one bit. If Japan is so fearful of SJW-minded people, then the Pokemon Anime deservedly should die as they need to grow a pair of Pokeballs and stand up for creative expression and Free Speech. I can understand banning the Porygon Episode(seizures are a bad thing) and to a lesser degree the Dratini Episode(Guns are bad and all but so is bad parenting) but this is indeed a new low. I thought censoring a kiss in XYZ47 was bad but damn this takes the win as he was trying to fit in with the Passimian(granted looking like one was not as bad as "acting" like one... seriously we like mature Ash TPC).

I had no idea what this was on about, I've never seen the S&M anime.

First searched up the pokemon. I was like "ok". I search up "Ash as passimian", I go to images.

Honestly, the fuck. How can an episode be banned cuz of that. Cmon really? Like why?

They have precedent for doing such things regarding "Jynx". Since Jynx's original color happens to be "Black", they thought it'd be offensive so they banned Episodes involving it or edited the Pokemon to be colored Purple so that it wouldn't be deemed "offensive". People need to grow up and TPC needs to grow a pair of balls when it comes to standing up to SJW/PC Culture.

So the episode gets banned due to Ash being Blackfaced.

SJW and PC culture has ruined entertainment, which means Blackfacing is more sensitive than ever. That reminds me, this is the first episode to have been banned in the dub since I believe Johto? I know the Skrelp episode of XY was banned initially due to a ferry sinking in South Korea, but was eventually aired out-of-order and the dialogue was changed to have made it as a flashback before the Cyllage Gym.

There could be a possibility that the Passimian episode could air out-of-order at a later date, and that is if Ash's Passimian costume gets censored by editing out the blackface. Then again, "monkey" and "ape" are also used as racial slurs towards black people, so this episode getting cut out of the dub could also be due to those reasons, because black people would have seen the Passimian costume as nothing but a derogatory portrayal towards their race.

As I said in my last post, SJW/PC Culture needs to grow up and TPC needs to grow a pair of Pokeballs. Intent should matter and their intent wasn't to offend in any way. The character was trying to blend in with Pokemon so as to better understand them and to help them(even if it was painful to watch because Ash was portrayed as a complete jack@$$).

I mean....maybe they can edit the costume to not have a black face if that's TCPI's issue? That could be a simple answer to the ban if they ever do go back to the episode and actually dub it. But considering Pokemon has gotten itself into controversy before I'm going to just go w/they'll never dub it...

No kidding, especially the SJW reasons (man, Carol Weatherford really ruined everything regarding her outburst on Jynx or Mr. Popo. What's even worse is that she doesn't even bother complaining against Staff Officer Black, Killa, or even Android 15 in Dragon Ball/DBZ, and that was despite the fact that they actually WERE meant to be Black in that case [Mr. Popo was technically supposed to be a Genie, and as far as Jynx, we may never know what exactly her inspiration was, but it's extremely unlikely they based her on blackface other than MAYBE the Ganguro fad that was all the rage back then. If anything, based on her being an ice-type, the so-called "black face" Jynx had would have been closer to frostbite akin to what happened to Mr. Deed's foot in the film Mr. Deeds than true black face.], yet not only did anyone not complain about those guys, but Android 15 if anything's actually one of the more popular minor characters despite, or possibly even BECAUSE of, his being a blatant stereotype, at least in the dub of the film. I'm sorry, but she really should be consistent about it if she's gonna complain about it. Heck, might as well have her denounce Ursula the Sea Witch from Disney's The Little Mermaid as blackface and have HER heavily edited or even cut out the scene where the Cyclopian KKK member forcibly unmasks Everett and his friends while they tried to rescue Tommy from the KKK lynching him due to the script outright stating they were in black face, just to be EXTRA consistent, while we're at it.). Though I could sort of understand the XYZ47 thing with Serena's kiss (since Ash and Serena WERE technically underage due to being 10, and quite frankly, I wasn't fond of them sexualizing 10 year olds like that. It'd be one thing if they were, say, 16, or even 18, where they're at least teens and not explicit children, as at least they would have been old enough to kiss in a romantic manner, but this... they're not even in puberty yet. To be honest, I actually hated how Hidaka started sexualizing the girls starting with May, and worse, actually bragged about it. Didn't even have the decency to age them up, at least enough to not qualify as prepubescent children and thus essentially push child porn [and I didn't like the inherent implications of how May and Dawn were 10 yet had a massive rack as well as wearing a skirt that's so short even a tiny breeze would expose all to everyone even BEFORE Hidaka basically confirmed it.]. I wouldn't even need to be an SJW to complain against that, as even those who would support freedom of speech would speak out against sexualizing prepubescent children and outright exploiting them like that. Then again, I definitely wouldn't have been happy with them ESPECIALLY if they were still depicted like the Love Hina girls, which basically was an SJW-fest before SJWs were even a thing.).

Yeah, it's stupid, really. And what's worse is this whole mess started long before we even knew the concept of SJWs, thanks largely to Carol Weatherford and Jynx. And yeah, it's definitely the first time since the OS that an episode was banned in the English dub. And not because of natural disasters or even unnatural disasters that would mandate needing it to be banned, but because someone got the idea that somehow it's a negative stereotype, being the Jynx situation all over again. And it's actually kind of funny, really, you do blackface, you get an episode banned, yet having explicit 10 year old girls undergo explicit sexual fanservice doesn't even get your show banned or even have the director, despite outright admitting it, being charged with registering as a sex offender, which, BTW, the whole thing of sexualizing explicit prepubescent children is FAR worse than someone merely wearing blackface (even if it is tasteless)?

As I said in my last post, SJW/PC Culture needs to grow up and TPC needs to grow a pair of Pokeballs. Intent should matter and their intent wasn't to offend in any way. The character was trying to blend in with Pokemon so as to better understand them and to help them(even if it was painful to watch because Ash was portrayed as a complete jack@$$).

Yeah, no kidding. And speaking of intent, considering Masamitsu Hidaka explicitly stated he intended for the girls starting with May to be explicit sexual eyecandy despite their being 10 and thus being prepubescent children, that's actually grounds for getting her AND Dawn banned due to it essentially peddling soft-core child porn to an audience that's not even supposed to enter puberty yet. I mean, it violates a lot of anti-child porn laws, even those in Japan (where the youngest kids could legally have consentual sex is 13 years old.). It's arguably even worse than the whole Love Hina anime thing (which actually COULD qualify as an SJW show considering how the girls constantly abuse Keitaru and are always treated as being in the right even when Keitaru didn't actually do anything wrong), since as bad as Love Hina was, especially with the fanservice and their being hypocrites about flaunting their bodies while beating up Keitaru when he's literally at the wrong place at the wrong time, at least most of the cast were actually the age of consent, or certainly a whole lot older than 10 years old (barring maybe Sarah McDougal).

While I would find Ash's antics completely painful to watch if I were to watch it, I wouldn't advocate for it to be banned just because he had to paint his skin black (and besides, did Staff Officer Black, Killa, or even Android 15 get their respective episodes/movies banned regarding Dragon Ball? Heck no! And unlike Jynx, Mr. Popo or even Passimian, those guys actually WERE meant to be black.). If anything, I saw far more racist stuff on Supergirl than with Jynx, Mr. Popo, or anything like that, and that right now IS an SJW show.

It is terrible that 16 years since the last episode banned in the dub for blackface, the topic now comes up again in Pokemon. Basically, Ash's Passimian costume as a whole would be horribly offensive towards black people because Passimian is a monkey-based Pokemon and the word "monkey" is a racist slur.

If the episode was to be aired in the dub, can you imagine all the black people complaining to The Pokemon Company and Disney XD about it?

Only people who'd complain about it would be people who have no tolerance or simply complain because they enjoy it(seriously there are people out there like that). Also if Disney had anything to do with pulling the Episode derives hypocrisy for their history with regards to controversy is chock full of Anti-Semitism. Most prominent one is the movie Lion King and the song "Be Prepared". One part of that song has Scar overseeing the Hyenas marching in Unison and then turning their head towards Scar. This is similar to Communist/Socialist Countries(including Nazi Germany) where Jews and other minorities were persecuted. Keep in mind this matters because this is a children's movie much in the manner that Pokemon is a children's show.

My viewpoint is that they should allow it and force parents to step up and do their job rather than delegating it to Government and society at large to do their job for them. The points Weedle brought up regarding May and Dawn is a bit concerning but it wouldn't be as big of a deal if they were to age the characters(which Weedle himself pointed out). The fact is, TPC has again wimped out on anything controversial and it just sickens me to no end.

It is terrible that TPCi are now being cowards in regards to political stuff, and therefore causing censorship in the Pokemon anime to go backwards to near-4Kids levels. Changing alcohol to juice is one thing, and so is Meowth looking underneath Mimikyu's cloth, but outright banning an episode for perceived racist stereotyping for the first time since 2002? That shows TPCi clearly is run by sensitive snowflakes who got worried about Ash's Passimian costume being offensive towards the black demographic.

Well, technically, The Lion King is more of a family movie than an actual children's movie (an actual children's movie would be a bit closer to, say, The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, or even a Barney and Friends movie.), so I'm not entirely sure that's the best example to use here (if anything, the original series was closer to Lion King level in terms of intended audience than Pok?mon right now, which is even something Takeshi Shudo had stressed on his blogs and his complaints about how Pok?mon starting with AG is no longer a family series, but purely geared towards kids [and arguably screwing up even there if you ask me, but that's neither here nor there].). But yeah, agreed there (well, maybe not the anti-Semitism bit, that was a false slur that was first given by some workers who got fired by Walt Disney due to their ties to the Communist Party as revenge.). It's definitely very bad what's going on right now. And considering how Disney's actions are harming the family brand name anyways (including the fact that they let LeFou and Lando be listed as Gay and Pansexual for the 2017 remake of Beauty and the Beast and Solo, respectively, despite it not really being a family friendly topic to begin with, and the rumors that are being generated [not being helped by some of Jennifer Lee's comments either] about what they're going to do with Elsa in the sequel [I'll give you a hint, it's the same thing the guys who did Supergirl ended up doing to Alex Danvers after its move to the CW], even as the production staff are denying this is going to happen), this is probably going to be even worse since the whole blackface thing is trivial compared to some of the stuff Disney's doing right now, where many times they're actually ADDING inappropriate things to their otherwise family media just to appease certain people in the audience (whom BTW probably won't even fill seats regardless of what they do).

Actually, I'd argue this is probably even WORSE than 4Kids' hijynxes (pardon the pun). As bad as the whole Jynx debacle is, at least that was the direct result of someone pretty much attacking them for it, while Parsimian's episode wasn't even complained about beforehand AFAIK (if anything, this is closer to what Disney did to Song of the South, and that wasn't even a bad film, let alone a negative racial stereotype. If anything, Uncle Remus was a GOOD role model, yet they effectively banned that movie in all but name because of perceived racism.). Plus, even with Jynx they definitely didn't constantly ban it just because it was prominent (I definitely remember watching the Prima episode, and that had Jynx being in a fairly prominent role).

Honestly, probably the only ones who would bother complaining are the BLM types as well as people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson (which, let's face it, those guys would probably complain about ANYTHING as being racist, the latter two being notorious race hustlers who literally profit on racism, with there even being evidence that a large part of the housing bubble burst back in 2008 was because those two legally forced Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae into giving homes to people who clearly couldn't afford it under the threat that they'd denounce them as racist institutions.). Heck, Bob Iger's probably in the same camp as those guys anyways if how he's handling ESPN is of any indication, such as how he had Jemele Hall not be punished at all despite her outright accusing Trump of being a White Supremacist (yeah, a guy who actually managed to succeed in making blacks and Hispanics have more employment opportunities and arguably did far more for them than the Congressional Black Caucus and the Hispanic Caucus ever did [which, BTW, they don't even bother to applaud Trump for that bit, which is despite their claims of fighting for them] is somehow a "White Supremacist", sure, and I'm Santa Claus and live in the North Pole.). Seriously, with all that's going on, I'm actually even MORE afraid of what's going to Pok?mon afterwards.

I do agree with your stance, especially with the way Disney is handling minorities in entertainment, like the aforementioned LGBTQ examples in Beauty And The Beast 2017 and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Changing iconic original characters just to please a certain demographic is really going too far, and as far as I know, Doc McStuffins, another property by Disney also inserted a lesbian couple in it, and that show is supposed to be targeted to the youngest age group, and I don't want kids having LGBTQ messages or other political statements forced onto them. If Elsa is revealed to be lesbian in Frozen 2, I am pretty much done with seeing Disney films. SJW and PC culture is the reason why I never go to the cinema anymore.

And back on the topic of Passimian, I'm certain no black people got triggered when the Japanese airing first happened. If anything, I bet it's because TPCi dubbing board heard of the Jynx debacle and decided to play safe by axing SM064 as opposed to something more simple like editing the black off of Ash's face, but I guess TPCi must have also seen that monkeys and apes are racist towards blacks as well, and likely axed the episode from the dub because of it.

I feel TPCi's censorship ever since the move to Disney XD is definitely sinking back to 4Kids-esque levels. Not just changing Ash's "crucifixion" pose to avoid religious offences, and censoring Ash and Serena's kiss in the XY/XYZ finale, but now succumbing to sensitive SJW culture and deciding to ban an episode for racist connotations for the first time since 2002, a time when 4Kids was still in charge.

Yeah, no kidding, especially with SJWs ruining a whole lot (they also ruined Supergirl as I had alluded to earlier, since back when it moved to the CW two years ago for the second season, aside from interjecting needless border/immigration politics and shilling for certain presidential candidates [not to mention bashing other candidates], they also had James Olsen making a remark about how he was discriminated against at school, and that was DESPITE the fact that it was made clear that Olsen had been a kid around the time his dad died during the Gulf War as a war photographer, meaning he was born AFTER the whole Civil Rights thing and thus shouldn't even need to worry about discrimination, not to mention Green Martian making a remark about being a black man as a disguise being hardship enough [and it was implied that he had been that since the 1980s], and then there's Alex, where they made her into a lesbian and had her dating and even nearly marrying Maggie Sawyer, and that's DESPITE the fact that, aside from Supergirl being a family show, Alex was NEVER implied to like loafers light in the first season, and if anything, she was indicated to be straight as well.).

Hopefully Disney learned their lesson especially after the failure of Solo, though Marvel's recent statement about deciding to add in two LGBT characters suggests they probably haven't. And quite frankly, banning an episode due to blackface (which they could just airbrush out anyway and replace with a mask) is going to massive extremes, something that I don't think even 4Kids ever did. And... seriously? Might as well ban every instance in Dragon Ball Z where the Saiyan characters are called monkeys if we're to follow that logic anyway (I mean, come on! Passimian's supposed to be a literal monkey, not a racist caricature.). The censorship is definitely getting out of hand anyways. I could sort of understand, say, censoring Ash and Serena's goodbye kiss in the finale, largely because they're supposed to be 10 year olds, and that kind of thing definitely isn't really appropriate for children especially their age (actually, most 10 year olds would act more like how Misty and Ash did regarding potential romantic feelings for each other, not even dare try to get close to each other, let alone kiss each other [they wouldn't have even developed the necessary hormones yet, and even if they had, they wouldn't even know what to do with it. Think along the lines of how the kids acted at Alex Whitney's attempt at a prom in The Simpsons.]. Serena if anything was depicted in overall characterization as being more of a 16 year old than a 10 year old, so... yeah.). But not the others, especially not the whole thing with Passimian.

Do we actually have an official statement from TPCI that this episode is actually banned yet or not?

It seems like we don't. If that's the case I'd say we'd need an official TPCI statement on the matter on whether this is actually banned or not.

Most outlets are reporting that it is though.

You know, I fail to understand why this episode needs to be skipped simply because of one scene, which can easily be altered to a scary mask or something as opposed to outright banning the episode, because this isn't the same case as the Jynx episode. I do know Disney XD is likely behind the censorship of this episode, since they have far more restrictions as to what can and can't be shown on the network in comparison to when the anime still aired on Cartoon Network, and they have sank to levels that haven't been seen since the days of 4kids in terms of censorship, so high chances are this wasn't TPCi that was behind the censorship, but the network.

It's not just Pokemon that's effected by these archaic network standards, as other shows that aired on Disney XD have been effected as well. I remember the Gravity Falls episode "The Love God" had to be rewritten in some parts before the episode was made because the original storyboard had an LGBT couple as well as the titular Love God having a transgender sign on his necklace as opposed to the male and female signs next to each other like it was in the aired version. This goes along with an episode of Star vs. the Forces of Evil being altered to have a scene with an LGBT couple kissing removed that managed to slip past the censors upon it's initial airing. Of course, there was also the censorship they employed to the English dub of Doraemon and Yo-Kai Watch, so in terms of anime dubs, Pokemon isn't alone. Not to mention the whole stream of E3 2018 had some censorship going on with it as well.

Unsurprisingly, Disney has always been rather aggressive towards keeping it's family-friendly image, especially when it comes to the topic of race. Just look at Song of the South for instance, which many have called out Disney for refusing to give a home release, despite the fact that the entire point of the movie was to call out racism towards African slaves. This is just another instance of that, even though the show is just an acquisition and not a home-grown program on the network.

Yes I am aware it's one scene of this episode that has rather unfortunate implications, but again, it could easily be altered to have him wearing a mask, as opposed to outright banning the episode from airing on TV simply because of this scene. While I am aware of the infamous Jynx episode, that was a much different case because it was the result of cultural barriers between Japan and the west that the creators were unaware of prior to the episode airing. TPC learned that lesson long ago, this is a much different case, especially considering that while he was wearing dark face paint, he didn't have the big red lips like Jynx did that imply the blackface stereotype is normally associated with. So yeah, it's obviously the Disney XD network that's cutting this episode out rather than TPC or anything like that.

Honestly, I just fail to understand why English dubs of anime intended for kids are still censored in ways reminiscent of the days of 4kids, especially considering those dubs were made in a much different time in American society in which America was a LOT more xenophobic (especially in the days following the September 11th attacks), which is what caused the infamous "jelly donut" scene to exist.

In all fairness though, and I apologize if I go a bit off-topic here, but I'd like to defend 4kids for a moment, because I honestly feel like they get too much blame for their bowdlerization practices. I should point out that a number of the controversial changes they made to their dubs (One Piece especially, let alone Pokemon or Sonic X) were caused not by the dubbing company itself like so many have been led to believe, but by the absolutely draconian restrictions that soccer moms had caused the FCC to put on Saturday Morning cartoons, and 90% of the shows 4Kids dubbed were aired on broadcast TV rather than on cable, where networks were allowed to set their own restrictions and more things were allowed to be shown. Now 4kids DID make some changes of their own here and there (mostly script changes like in the early Pokemon seasons), but a large portion of the changes made in their dubs were not caused by 4kids at all, but by the networks demanding that certain things be changed or removed in order for the shows to air.

Unsurprisingly, these extremely draconian practices are what caused Saturday Morning cartoons to go extinct, so I simply fail to understand why they are still enforced with English anime dubs that are made for a younger demographic such as Pokemon, as opposed to older audiences like the anime dubs of FUNimation. It just makes no sense to me.

Yeah, I'm not too sure whether to blame Disney for that, since Disney if anything is actively pushing for the exact things that got censored, and sometimes they don't even BOTHER censoring it (take that little kids' show about an aspiring young girl wanting to become a vet: That had an explicit lesbian couple in there, in the flesh, no censorship at all. In fact, I'm not even sure Gravity Falls and Star vs. the Forces of Evil got censored there either.). Besides, let's not forget that Disney allows Gay Days in its theme parks, and Bob Iger even prevented Jemele Hall from being fired despite speaking out against Trump by accusing him of being a White Supremacist. Under Iger, he seems more concerned with catering to SJWs and democrat politicians than actually keeping a family friendly image, something which former Imagineers and shareholders have actually called him out on. Then again, Disney did ban its own film Songs of the South for similar charges of racism.

People need to remember that I said it isn't confirmed yet. It is still possible it has just shifted. However, this is the only reason that I can think of.

I just don't know why it would shift in airing as it never happens unless something happens IRL or is a special like the Mewtwo episode in Unova. I just wanted to post this because I knew people would ask and think it was banned, plus some media are already assuming it is banned.

The only possible reason for shifting the episodes for this, that I can think of, is that they want to wait until football season. (Although it is more like Rugby)

It's most likely gonna just be edited in the end. I mean if the creators of the series thought nothing of it through the process of the creation, then why would anyone else? You can't tell me that everyone in the production thought this was ok, but most probably just assumed that people wouldn't be that easily offended. I wouldn't be surprised if the creators of the show were SURPRISED at the feedback on the scene.
