So i heard Gary is mr. Shigeru in japan, no wonder he says "smell you later"

Yes, and Ash's name is "Satoshi" which is the name of the creator of the series, Satoshi Tajiri. I also heard that originally their names were supposed to be like "Ninten" and "Sony" or something but don't quote me on that.

Haha Ninten and Sony would have been a bit weird hahaha. I think Satoshi and Shigeru are both really cool names, and I did know about the game creators giving their names to the characters. They probably wished they could be pokémon trainers for real c:

Ninten and Sony are names in the game, and they're set as the player's name if you manage to skip the name input process, which is possible to do with a GameShark code that enables a few debugging features, one of which skips the introduction cutscene.

If memory serves, those names are only in the non-Japanese versions of the game though, it was added during the game localization process, most likely as an inside joke or a way to get back at them for dropping Nintendo when they were working together on the SNES CD just a few years prior.

    That's actually pretty funny.

That's partly true, only it was Nintendo who caused the end of the project by secretly colluding with philips behind Sony's back and letting them know with a public announcement at the 91 CES.

Although, the reason that those two default names are in the game is probably what you say it is, an inside joke.
