So I dropped out

I personally would've just stuck it out and graduated... maybe asking if a transfer to a better school was possible.

An associates degree can run you $10,000 to $15,000 dollars, and that's kind of on the low end, just so you know.

First off, a question. Does your school have an alternative high school program? If it does, I would highly suggest looking into the program.

This is incredibly inaccurate. In community colleges [at least the ones in my state], tuition only costs around $1000 a quarter [three 5 credit classes], and since it takes two years to normally obtain an associate's, it would only be around $6,000 - $7,500. That is insanely lower than ANY four year university [where tuition is $9,000 a quarter/semester in low end schools].

I was basing this off of my associates degree tuition, which is running me $2700 this semester (I'm taking 16 credits worth of courses - with five courses). And it'll cost me another $2700 or so for three more semesters, plus $700 more in a summer semester. Maybe my tuition estimate was off because my degree program of choice has a lot of required courses, and I had been looking at other, more expensive community colleges in my area prior to choosing my current school.

Hmm, okay. I was basing things off the tuition that people I know in my state pay. I realize now that the price per credit might vary a lot by state, and I'd forgotten that programs at community colleges can vary as well [such as the nursing program, which costs a lot more because of lab/hospital practice fees]. Also, the community colleges in my area are on the quarter system [while, as you said, yours are on the semester system], so that explains a bit of why the costs you and I wrote down are so different. I'm sorry if I came across as mean!

If you think your decision is right and you think you have a better future on other times, then go ahead. Forget your I'll fated "friends" who don't really care about you, who only care because your whatever or so on. I myself dropped out because I have to study in Russia, although my friends(they don't abandon me calls me a commie after they found outwtf).

If the high school you are currently in, And you say its bad such as the students there do Drugs,Sex etc, Why not move to a batter high school?

It's your choice, but personally, I think that you'd earn more respect by continuing high school and finishing it off and going on to college. People in your school shouldn't be the ones to force you to drop out. If you don't like what they do, you should strive to make it into a better school that doesn't have all these bad influences and bad students.

I guess I can't really say much, though, since I go to a school that doesn't really have all these bad things, since it is an Islamic school, and everyone there is pretty much clean, in terms of drugs, sex and alcohol, so I can't make a comparison between me and you. It's all up to you, but I strongly recommend that you stay at high school and continue on to college.

I'm too late to comment about how stupid I could think this is, but nah, the I came up with the most logical reason:

You live in Arizona, one of the worst states for education. I honestly can't blame you for getting out of the ****** school system while still trying to do somehting for yourself involving edumication.
And, the people at your school are idiots... I mentioned dropping out to some of the people at my school, they called me a dumbass. But, do they have the right to call me that with failing/semi-failing grades while being all doped up and ****? I think not.

I think it's a stupid idea to totally drop out. I won't blame you for leaving that school. (and even that entire school district). If the school fails that bad, you're not wrong by leaving THAT school. Getting a GED is a good move. You can get a degree at any community college and then move on to a university to complete your 4+ years of education after high school. :P

I don't blame you one bit. My High school years sucked ass too, but I stuck it out because I didn't have any other choice. If I did have a choice..I'd have dropped out.

Alright. Let's see. Without a high school diploma, you are not going anywhere in life.

Shows how naive you are right there ^^

You don't need a degree, diploma or any certificate for ANYTHING to get anywhere in life. It all depends on what you want to do and whether or not school will help you with it. School did NOTHING for me for what I wanted to become. I completed my school years to the end but never really needed it from year 10 onwards, but I stayed.

But to say you won't get anywhere in life without a diploma, shows how much you DON'T know.

Precisely. Here in the States, over the past 20 years, a GED and a diploma have pretty much become equals.

Lemme guess...public school?

Not that I have anything against ALL public schools, but my life was a living hell in middle school up until I started going to a private school in 8th grade.

Nonetheless, your friends are right. You're an idiot for dropping out of school. And your parents are idiots for letting you do so. That, or they aren't really good parents that care about your future.

But hey, it's your choice. No one's stopping you or anything. I just think you're making a HUGE mistake doing so. And I think your parents are making an even bigger mistake LETTING you do such a thing.

Edit: Adding on, I suppose one would create their own destiny, and if your destiny is to drop out and somehow get a decent job, then hey. But one can always change their fate, just to let you know.

Pointing out this too. I asked my Math teacher today "What job does this math apply to?"
She responded "Depends on the job you take."

She tried to juke me, so I asked "Specifically what jobs are they, that require this exact math?"

She actually told me to go out of the room before answering.

Try to figure that out. Algebra is useless beyond means if the person teaching it can't even explain what job it's useful for.
Teacher, Cashier, Manager, Accountant, Tax Accountant, CEO etc.

Those jobs use maths and for Algebra, obviously a teacher teaches it. You're not so smart in the long run yourself!

HAHAHAHA... Dropping out? You know this is the best joke thread I've seen in my life XD

Yeah, these days in school there no sane people anymore. Best reason for making a joke thread on dropping out is because a bunch of retards don't see you fit for them. You my friend would be screwed forever if you did drop out.

I read over the original post, and I have to say I sympathise. School is not for everyone, despite what the majority of the populace think. I admit is was definitely for me(seeing as I'm 22 and still taking university courses), but it was not for my little brother. What he ended up doing was taking courses online, on his own time.

I'm not sure what exactly this GED is, but it sounds fairly similar. But if it's not, I suggest looking into taking online courses. It appears to me that your decision was based mostly on the fact that you dislike many of the non-educational aspects of going to high school(of which I for one would have to agree with, actually). By taking them online, you don't have to worry about a lot of that crap, and you can also do your work when you need to, taking as many or as few breaks as you see fit. And in my brother's case, he went and finished his Grade 12 in a matter of two months. =O

I suppose the best thing would be to figure out what you want to do in life, and make sure you aren't preventing yourself from getting there. I wish you luck whicher way you go! ^_^

I don't see a problem here. Does anyone know someone personally that has dropped out? I know plenty and they're doing fine with their lives. You can still pursue post-education without a high school diploma: get a GED, attend a junior college, and you can still make it 4-year university. Really, its not the end of the world for someone who drops out.

I wish the best for your future. Good luck.

I mean, it's hard for me to comment on how it is in the states, but here in Australia there is so much opportunity that NOT having a degree these days doesn't really hinder your chances of "going somewhere in life". I mean sure, you'd need something on paper if you wanted to be a lawyer, doctor, etc...but there are so many avenues and pathways to take if you want to do something with your life that having a degree doesn't necessarily have anything to do with.

Well I don't quite know how the US school system works but I guess it's quite different to over here. If someone dropped out early over here in the UK, they would have basically no chance getting any further than working in a small corner shop (Ok that was a little exaggerated, but the point still stands). In fact they're upping the age that compulsory school ends to 18 now, so everyone gets A-Levels.

You couldn't have chosen a worse time to drop out really, I mean the recession is hardly going to help you find a job.

Dropping out of school is a mistake, full stop. You need a diploma to get anywhere good in life. Sure you can get an average job without one but that's not a good plan in life. No diploma means no choice in your life, you have to take what people give you no matter how you feel. These types of jobs means less money than you expect and outrageous amounts of time. I think your friends are right to be negative about dropping out since it is a big mistake.
