4th Gen So i'm playing SS for the first time

Heartgold & Soulsilver were the only remakes I never jumped out to buy when they first came out, and I have no idea why. I was bigger on Gen 1 as a kid but still had a lot of love in my heart for Gen 2 and I've heard from many people that the Gen 2 remakes are quite possibly the best, most refined Pokémon games released to date.

Are there any big differences I should expect from the originals other than a visual update and the Gen 4 gameplay mechanics? I'm excited to see what i'll discover!

There's a few differences. The first Pokemon you have in your party follows you around, and they added the battle frontier from platinum, they added a few new characters as well a bunch of other little stuff like that, and on top of that It has probably the nicest interface they've ever made for any gen imo with a ton of quality of life improvement that I wished they had kept for future gens,.

It's a true remake though so everything will still be pretty familiar to you for the most part. You should def check it out as soon as you can.

I'm enjoying it so far, just beaten the Ecruteak City gym. I'm enjoying the challenge again, the more recent pokémon games have been a breeze to play through even if you are training an entire team of 6 pokémon.

You are going to have a great time going through it. Gen 2 remakes are the best pokemon games and you definitely won't get bored after you beat the game since there is so much to do postgame. Not much to say about differences that Goketsu didn't already bring up. Did you also get the Pokewalker? I guess that is one feature not from the originals that hasn't been mentioned yet. It adds some extra fun and interaction to the game. I still use mine all the time.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, HG/SS was actually my true Johto experience since I never played 2nd Gen previously and I do love the new features that were added to make Johto more enjoyable than it originally was. Walking Pokemon is also a feature many loved.

Gold and Silver used to by my favorite games and now Heart Gold and Soul Silver are. I guess that's expected but re-playing the old games again, these newer ones are so much better. There's truly annoying crap in the old games (that we all appreciate and love) but jeez. What a pain. Running out of room in your bag, running out of room in your PC. Stuff we take for granted now.

Also any pokemon following you around doesn't hurt.

I wish i'd gotten the pokéwalker! I bought the game second hand and its expensive enough as it is (even more so than the recent entries), so if I can find a cheap one going for sale in a store somewhere i'll pick it up otherwise i'll have to pass on that one.

I'm also starting to wonder if i'm genuinely doing something wrong here? I haven't played the original Gen 2 games for years and years so I could be but all my pokémon were around level 25-29 by the time I got to the Cianwood City gym, which was slightly underleveled for his level 31 Poliwrath. Didn't have too much trouble but now i'm having major difficulties with Jasmine's 35 steelix. there's virtually nowhere decent to train at this point in time so I can only assume i'm doing something wrong? I'll grind if I have to, but i'm not fond of that.

Hah, you're not doing anything wrong these games are known for that. The level balance in HG/SS is not as even as any of the other games. I noticed the same when I replayed it from the beginning recently. You could just grind on wild pokemon, but the challenge is much more fun.
