    Spoiler:

This probably doesn't mean anything, or at least I hope it doesn't due to my irrational hatred of Colress, but I thought it was interesting. The screenshot is from XY.

I also have irrational hatred of Corless, he stole a part of B2W2 that could've gone to Ghetsis.

    NONETHELESS.

I think it might be coincidental only. I don't remember any huge characters in other games returning in the future to play a big part of the story (unless Cynthia/Looker kinda count but probably not). I've seen a lot of theories about the stones and unfortunately a lot of other theories make a little more sense. Coat thing seems aesthetic only, and the big stones thing seems like it refers to B2W2 only (somehow? although I don't recall that there). I suppose this could be a hint to how they combine all the games but it might be too little to grasp onto currently.

Like what was mentioned above, it's purely coincidental. I recall there was also a thread that pointed out that the Moon logo resembled Mega Salamence's wings, but again that's a pure coincidence and not intentional.

Colress just happens to have diamond-shaped buttons on his jacket; I feel it's purely coincidence that the objects of interest on the Japanese logos are also diamond-shaped.

I think it would be a pretty interesting plot dynamic if for Sun & Moon they brought back various villains and had them all together--meaning that, who knows? Maybe it's possible we will see Colress in these games and he may well hold a major role. But even then, I feel of all things his coat buttons are so irrelevant, why make them into a design aspect of the games' logos? Colress would have to be a huge factor in the upcoming games' plot to even have any aspect of him shown on the box/logo, and I'd say his hair is much more iconic and worth incorporating into a logo than his coat buttons.

Think back to X & Y, where the Mega Evolution helix was featured on the Japanese logo, but not AZ's Key, which was much more important plot-wise. This makes me think that, whatever those diamonds are referencing, it's more likely they are something related to a Pokémon rather than a person. It would be cool if they were related to a person but, again, it would have to be something relevant, too.

I didn't even notice the similarity of the crystals to the buttons on Colress' coat until you pointed it out, but quoting this part of your post I do believe the crystals in the logos will more likely be related to a Pokemon, presumably the mascot legendaries.

While it's an obvious coincidence, it would be cool if Colress makes his appearance in Sun and Moon. Even better if he's our regional professor for these new games!

I was honestly kind of thinking this too; if not the Professor, maybe the assistant? Although his personality suggests that he'd rather work alone I think, so who knows.

If they somehow incorporate Mega Evolution into the main plot(again) for SM, I think it would be neat to see him again. I was honestly expecting him to show up in the post-game of XY after encountering that NPC who met him on Route 10.

The big stones the backpacker on that route is talking about are the rocks around that route. I do wonder if Corless will be said to have researched the diamonds. Btw, is Corless even a Unovan? Irc Ghetsis is said to have gathered the sages from multiple lands, that might be the case with Corless too.
