Here is something that has been on my mind I think since generation 3 of pokemon and want to see if others share my opinion.
Most starters seem to be a higher chance of being male and that is all well but I think some starters are not meant to be males.
Do you guys think that some starters should maybe have a higher chance of being females?
I mean pokemon like chikorita and fennekin.
I restarted pokemon x and y so many times just to get a female fennekin because I just couldn't have a male delphox :D
Maybe some of you agree with me.

The starters have a higher chance of being male because the game creators thought that there would be more of a male audience, and I guess they have just kept that tradition.

Some starters do look like they should be female, but there are a lot of pokemon with this issue (Machop and Ralts lines, Jynx, etc). If the creators want to be consistent with prior pokemon - both starters and non-starters - they should keep it that way.

The genders are weighted toward males to prevent ease of breeding. You can see the same trend in Eevee, Togepi line, and fossil Pokémon.

Granted, this was set up prior to the egg moves mechanics changes in Gen. VI. But still, cross-breeding across species would be more difficult to start.

I don't think the Chikorita or Fennekin lines look feminine to the point where they should be female focused...and even then there is such a thing as effeminate men.

I had a male Delphox in my run of X, didn't bother me in the slightest. I had a female Conkeldurr in White too. I don't really care. Female bodybuilders exist. :P

VisualJae has the best sum-up of this. The reason why starters' gender heavily skews towards males is to make them rare and hard to breed without a Ditto, and the starters are meant to be your character's precious partner and the best Pokemon on their team. The fact it's rare and meant to be hard to breed also explains the high male percentage with Togepi's line, Eevee line, Riolu line, Zorua line, fossils etc.

It's a trend that's unlikely to be broken in Sun & Moon, so don't be surprised if Rowlet, Litten and Popplio have the usual 87% chance to be dudes again.
