Status conditions

Anyone else think status conditions are OP in this game, at least for NPCs? I'm probably just unlucky, but in one battle against a kahuna, I flinched from the move headbutt 5 times in a row. Another of my Pokemon was too paralyzed to move for 4 turns in a row (her Pokemon was also paralyzed, but was able to attack every turn). She also got 5 critical hits through the course of the battle. My Pokemon were almost 5 levels above her's and she still stomped me. Freaking Nospass and Boldore screwed me up.

Yeah I feel like you're absolutely right. I think they must have messed with the mechanics regarding status conditions, accuracy percentage, etc. I've definitely been in the same boat with this game: missing upwards of 6 times in a row, flinching, being too confused for life, the list goes on. But I think this adds to the difficulty of the game so I'm not too worried about it.

I was going to post something about this. The worst one for me is poisoning. It seems like every move that has a chance of poisoning will poison my Pokémon 100% of the time.

welcome to the fun fun world of the RNG and hax friends

But yes they have made changes to some status moves. Poison Gas now has 90% accuracy instead of the unusable 55% percent, and paralysis only cuts Speed by 50% instead of 75% now, for example. Confusion also only has a 33% chance of causing the confused poke to hit itself.

There's probably other changes too that I'm not aware of atm.

Wow I didn't know Poison Gas got an accuracy buff. No wonder it annoyed me when I was fighting stuff like Grimer and Salandit.

But like mentioned above, status has had a lot changed this generation, such as the aforementioned paralysis and confusion, but also burn's residual damage being less than it used to be.

This isn't related to status in particular but hax:

There was an NPC near Hakulani Observatory and he had an Absol with a Z-move and it kept using Night Slash and it kept critting every single member on my team and it was incredibly frustrating to deal with.

I think that Absol had Super Luck. That might explain all those crits it handed to you.

Unless I was using Pikachu or Electabuzz, Paralysis wasn't quite an issue unless it came from non-Electric attack. (By that same token, my Decidueye and Leafeon wouldn't feel Oddish/Bellsprout's nasty Powder attacks. (Not just Oddish and Bellsprout, but they're the most common Grass examples. Their Powders were especially devastating in 1stGen Kanto.) Oh, and ask me how I like Sleep, one reason I respect/hate Hypnosis. (Thx, Gastly/Drowzee line.)

None of that seems to matter, with the introduction of Refresh. Ask me how many times I had to go to the Center for status-related reasons in the prior games, because I only go there for HP/PP restoration nowadays. Thanks, GF.

I bet I'm not the only one who'd praise Refresh. :)

Rng hates you and favors the npc in my experience. Like I got like 3 crits in my whole adventure. The npc got so many 10% secondary effects on me combined with 3 crits in a row and hitting trough paralysis and confusion I mean like wtf. There hasn't been one boss battle where I wasn't critted. Or maybe I am just that unlucky, because yesterday on showdown I got frozen 3x and almost every turn got critted.
