Hi friends! I'm doing a sort of breeders hatchling monotype game play and working on the preliminary factors of the play through. One of which is building a kind starter team with unevolved Pokemon. My goal is to build a grass-type based team that is as diverse as possible. The only problem is, I have 2 Pokemon that are Grass - Poison and I've decided that since I've already played with Bulbasaur, he's going to be the sacrificial lamb so to speak. The problem is, I need an alternative and I'm having trouble choosing.

Can I get some dual grass type thrown at me? Here are the types I already have on my team:

    Pure Grass
    grass + poison,
    grass + fighting,
    grass + ghost,
    grass + ice.

I'm thinking I either need a grass + bug type or a grass + water, but I'm wondering if this would make my team too weak to fire. What do you guys think?

Between choosing a Grass/Bug and Grass/Water, I'd say take Grass/Water (which is the Lotad line) since they can actually use Water to counter Fire and that will definitely help your team. Having a Grass/Bug will only make you more susceptible to Fire.

Grass/Bug types are unfortunately incredibly flimsy. I seldom use Parasect (which is a Pokémon with a cool design, workable stats and foremost a very interesting origin in the natural world), because of the sizable type weaknesses mounted against it. A true shame, I think.

I would suggest adding Shiftry, Whimsicott, Exeggutor and Serperior to your list for consideration.

I feel Whimsicott would make a strong candidate; with its Prankster ability, it could take out the opponent's defenses within blink of an eye.

    Thanks for your suggestions guys!

RE: Elysium I really like the idea of adding a grass + fairy type on the team, especially since this is a team founded in Pokemon X. It would only make sense~ I really like his (it's?) design too. Cottonee would make a really cool unevolved starter Pokemon on the team too. I was wondering about the bug type, since fire seems to kill them pretty easily (which makes sense, thinking on their nature, so thanks for pointing that out for me Elysium! I was looking into Exeggutor earlier in the development phase, and on paper it seems really cool but I dunno. I'm just not a fan of the design. Like at all. Serperior --- oh boy. That design is drool worthy. lol. So majestic. With Vine Whip and Leaf Tornado, I definitely see this Pokemon having the potential for a Leading position on the team. Only problem is I'd have to get him through trade since he's not in X or Y. hm..... tough choices.

EDIT: just now realizing that Serperior is evolved from Snivy, which I happened to get in a wonder trade and thus can breed with Ditto! Now the question is who works best on the team! haha.

Re: Hikamaru: I think with Elysiums suggestion, I'm moving more towards Grass/Fairy, but the points you bring up for Grass/Water types are really interesting. A lot of the friends I would end up battling do use fire types mainly. Is there even such a thing as a Grass/Fire type or is that a stupid question? lol <-- Yay newbishness~

Re: Peitharchia: I looked up your suggestion of Whimsicott and the more I look at them, the more I want one. it would make a lot of sense to have them on my team as I mentioned to Elysium earlier. It looks like they would really help with Dragon Type pokemon, although it does add more weakness to fire type.

So ultimately, I've decided that Snivy is going to be my pure grass type (replacing Leafeon, which was really, really hard to do but since I"ve already played with a fully trained Leafeon....).

Now, for the next type, my friend mentioned a grass / ground type Turtwig which has some interesting moves. They are resistant to electric, which would help against electric based teams but I still have the issue of the weakness to fire. It's starting to look like that's going to be the main issue of the grass type team as a whole, though.

It's true, Fire tends to be the main threat since there's only like two Grass-types that can easily pick them off, those being Cradily and Ludicolo. It's a main reason why I suggested Ludicolo, because it can learn powerful Water attacks and Rain Dance to summon rain and weaken Fire attacks.

@hikamaru, that definitely makes sense. For now, here's the team as it starts. As I said, it's important to me that I hand raise these bbs so they're all pre-evolution right now, starting from the very beginning of LvL 1. The moves they have right now are only the moves they were born with. Tomorrow, I think I'm going to go over the least of each Pokemon's move and see which moves I want to develop to give us the best fighting chance.

I echo that you may want to consider Cradily for your team. I don't think it has an attractive design, but it can play a useful role in you team with Rock coverage against Fire.

It's definitely a good candidate to replace Chespin. The biggest resistance I have to Creadily is that they are resistant to 2 types, where as Chespin is resistant to 4.

Ludicolo is definitely a candidate to replace Chespin, more so than Cradily mainly because of the Water aspect. They're also resistant against ground and steel, which helps balance out the rest of the team. AND, they're even catchable in X! I'm very strongly considering Ludicolo, but I'm going to think on it, since I've already bred my Chespin. XD
