Supporter nickname?

    I was signed on as a PC Supporter about two or three weeks ago, and immediately jumped to Tier 4 for donating $20. I now have the promised italicized username. But I have seen some supporters who have nicknames which are different from their usernames. What I mean by that is this:

    Username: ghkso
    Name shown on posts: Joe

    I would like to know how to change this, and if I have to, who to contact.

    Go to your details and search for "Also Known As", it's not just a staff thing anyone can use it. :3
     
    Also, your display name doesn't change - it simply adds the tab as seen in Team Fail's post.

    I disagree. As far as I know, for one, it isn't simple and for two it would be really confusing to allow everyone to be able to change how their name is displayed as people could just change it everyday and nobody could keep track of who is who.
     
    I think it would be an easy solution to the problem of not being able to change usernames. People are always going to want that and may not want to make a new account, although I know it's allowed I dont really want more than one. However I think it would be cool to have the ability to change your display name. If the server can handle that sort of thing, I say go for it.

    Yeah, I remember Team Fail showed us there was an add-on to it, so that's why I suggested it.

    And maybe there should be a limit but whatever they come up with.
     
    I'd say this is a good idea, but possibly limit it to one nick-name change every 90 days or so? That's what most big sites use to protect their server from crashing and it should also keep the public happy.

    Every 90 days seems ok, just as long as it isn't like every day or once a week or something like that that would cause server stress. I honestly think a lot of people would be happy with this add on.
     
    I think though if it's just an "option", the server should be able to handle it, as the actual change is on the receiver end rather than the server end (ie quick HTML change). After all, we request the postbit quite often, so adding one tiny load shouldn't be that bad.

    I'm playing with the function used to change usernames to see if I can make it work more efficiently. I had some successful test runs last night but it needs more tweaking, but if all goes well we might be able to bring back name changes.

    Until then though, I'll say flat out that display names aren't going to happen.
