SWC Planning Thread

This all seems good to me, though I'd have to agree with bobandbill that Honourable Mention emblems won't be necessary unless we get a large number of entries, and even then not unless there's something really exceptional (like an amazing but rather irrelevant story), which warrants an award but which, for some reason, can't be given one.

So I suppose I'm a little leery of handing out too many awards too indiscriminately; the emblems ought to feel like they mean something.

Other than that, it seems like this planning stage is done. Unless I've missed some crucial point that someone's raised.

I've got a feeling that a some measure might be needed to curb really short entries. Sure, they're not typically going to get the award, but I feel that if we're going for depth here, then the works being submitted would naturally have at least a decent amount of content. Perhaps we should

While there should be no maximum word limit on the other hand (the work might be EXTREMELY long, despite not being chaptered), I believe that we should at least put out that they should be a bit conscious that while depth is encouraged, this is in fact a small writing competition.

Just something I thought should be pointed out on the side. Otherwise, aside from the emblem issue, it looks good to me.

We could always change:
The entry can only be a completed one-shot as this is a small writing competition - no chaptered entries, please!
to:
The entry can only be a completed one-shot as this is a small writing competition - no chaptered entries, please! The entry can be as long as it needs to be to tell the story, but something that's way too short is not likely to score well, and a very long entry isn't fitting with the name of this contest.
On the flip side, way too short/long entries hasn't been a notable problem of previous contests, particularly the latter.

Very true. I may also imply that people don't have to literally kill themselves trying to get first prize, either. It's not like we expect anyone to emerge with something like a modern-day Odyssey or something.

Admittedly, I haven't seen that many SWC stories here (not all of them get posted after the competitions, I've noticed), but I don't remember seeing any ludicrously long entries, nor any very short ones. Since most people appear to have been able to muddle through in the past, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to this time as well - though of course, we could always minimise the risk of it happening by including the proposed addition to the rules, if we think it's necessary.

A couple other indicated their interest in entering, but yeah, given that there's only another 5-6 hours left, it needs extending. Idk about the whole week (but yes to that if we still have hardly anyone), so maybe a couple days to start with? I'll go be obnoxious with advertising it as well.

I'm late to the party here (time zone troubles, I think) but I agree. Although you've probably put it into action already, since you've reached a majority agreement without me.

Time zones are the worst, sometimes.

Anyways, gave it a three day extension, and making a blog/FF&W announcement about it too.
