But, we already see a bunch of *'s when we swear don't we? I've never really tested it out from fear of getting banned or anything, but I'm pretty sure there IS an auto-filter right now. In fact, let me test that theory.

****.

Yep, auto-filter. Your main concern obviously isn't the fact that there are people who literally have to swear, as you stated it's that parents won't allow their kids onto the forum. To be completely honest, I find this to be a very invalid point, as if your too young to be allowed some form of freedom on the internet during your tenure online, then you shouldn't even be here to begin with. There's already a ton of racy content (sig-pic wise) and even some of the things that are spoken about are very PG13+.

The filter to be able to turn it on and off again would really do nothing more than allow a certain freedom in posts (e.g RP posts will be able to have a bit more context in certain characters dialogue, certain sentences will have more effect, etc) and make it so that there aren't ugly *'s every time I want too use the other word for poo.

I'm for this.

Quick Edit: I'm not going to get banned for testing out the auto-censor theory am I? D:

Just to clarify, I'm going on 17. And as the only person who has access to my brain, I think I have the final say on what my concerns are. Sorry, I don't want to sound mean, but you really shouldn't pretend to know these things. Now on topic, I actually wouldn't mind much at all if it put substitute words instead.

If you're turning 17 (which is an odd fact to state, considering your follow up points), then I find your previous argument pretty invalid anyway haha. Unless your parents would prohibit your access too PC if they say lots of *'s or even swearing, I personally don't see your concern?

That being said, I may have appeared rude in my past comments, bust as you say, you are the only person with access to to your brain and such. So please shed some light on what your actual main concern is, if you'd please? Substitute words would be completely stupid, and would be more annoying than the current perma-filter. With the option to turn it on and off the forums would remain virtually untouched visually by anybody who kept the filter on. So, again, your arguments against the proposed change confuse me, and I'd love for you to shed some light onto the subject. :)

Do I need to be the one in immediate danger of losing access to the forums in order to be against it? I know it sucks to not be allowed on your favorite site, so I don't want others to have to leave Pokecommunity. This is why I think substitutes would be better than *'s.

I'm against this. For one thing, we'll see less members under 18. (Though some people may see that as a plus) seeing a bunch of *'s rather then a swear word is no different to many parents. And the fact is, people act immature, get angry, and insult people more when they're allowed to swear. Yes, there are people that use them responsibly, but the vast majority of people just never learned that common sense. Swear words are primarily for extreme emphases. imo, There should never be a situation on an online forum that calls for any that extreme.

That said, as many people above me have pointed out, PC has a much more mature community than others. So this may not be a problem. My main concern is that all those people on the internet that literally have to swear anytime they get slightly flustered will start coming to PC and over time degrade it.

Which part needs lighting?

No, but unless you know somebody who is (in which case, as many others have pointed out, if they're under thirteen they shouldn't even be on here) then I don't see why it's such a massive concern of yours. It does suck not being allowed on your favourite site, which is why the people that that would effect would have the Profanity Filter enabled. And as for substitute words, I'm assuming you mean every time a swear is typed and submitted, a PG13 version or a child-friendly version of that word appears in the post, instead of the original word? I'm more against this than I would be with any other potential change to the website. That would completely defunct the point of having a Profanity Filter in the first place, and would frustrate many people that would type a single swear in, let's say, 136 posts, and have that swear changed into something that they didn't type.

I know that the parents I know are probably nothing like the parents everybody else on the forum interacts with, but I don't know a single parent who would see a string of *'s and ban their child from using the website that said content was displayed on. It's just a completely wild thought that I'm afraid I can't get on board with, FlamingRage. I really don't understand your reasoning behind it.

I'd just like you too actually tell me what your main concern is, be it the fact that some users parents may ban them from the website for seeing *'s or if it's that people on here would lose all inhibitions once they turned their Profanity Filter off and start swearing like it's the latest craze?

Sure, the profanity would probably rise by the slightest fraction of a percent, but at the end of the day we're on a forum for Pokemon, gaming and socialising, and I haven't ran across a single user that would abuse their ability to swear unfiltered. So again, I'm sorry, but I don't understand your reasoning behind being against this decision and, thought it's not my place to say, I find it quite childish.

You keep arguing that people younger than 13 are not allowed on the site. You're missing that I'm not talking about 13 year olds. I'm talking about people older than 13 who's parents won't let them use sites with swear words.

You seem to have missed that my suggestion of using substitute words is for when the filter is toggled on. Not all the time.

I am not suggesting that people will instantly start flaming each other once swearing is allowed. Please read my entire post.

If you simply read my initial post, it should be quite clear what my main concern is. (hint: it's the one with the words "my main concern" right in front of it.)

And you'll notice I'm no the only one who keeps arguing that, either. Besides, that begs the question of in what modern age would somebody who owns a computer, and is over 13, be monitored on their internet usage? Seems so foreign too me. Might just be me, though.

You seem to have missed that my suggestion of using substitute words is for when the filter is toggled on. Not all the time.

But nobody except you suggested that and I was simply stating that I found it to be a horrible idea, even if it is executed only once the filter is toggled on. The current filter is *'s, it's not going to be changed into substitute words because that would just be A) time-consuming when it comes down to coding, with the amount of vulgar words that are at the disposal of every human in existence, and B) again, stupid. Said controlling parent will see a bunch of words that look out of place and add two and two together, if you're concerned about the *'s you should be concerned about that, too.

I was well aware of that, but since you seem too have a few concerns, I was a bit confused as to whether or not your main concern had changed during the past few exchanges we have had.

Please, stop responding to me like I'm some form of moron. Highlighting parts of your post isn't doing anything but irk me, and I came into this exchange with a rather light, yet inquisitive, heart. I was simply pointing out why I thought your reasoning behind being against this proposed change was childlike and invalid. And by the way, I didn't address it earlier, but I never pretended to know what was going on inside of your brain. I was merely stating that I didn't, and still don't, believe that your main concern is the fact that people will start swearing as soon as they get flustered.

I'm rather flustered right now, and regardless of whether or not we had a profanity filter, I haven't used a single vulgar word.

For:
- swear sensor
- possible slang sensor
- vowels and c's replaced by asterisks or underscores
- the worst four letter swear ever, the "c for girl parts", should have a warning flag or all letters of it blocked
- option to force replace profanity with silly words. Examples: F-bombs = troll off's, pokerface's, squeeker's, Seaking's & S-bombs become: doodoo, stink-picklehead, stupid poopy, plopperface, dumb little Spongebob's
- different sensor option for visitor/private message, blog posts, general forum contributions

I feel that using profanity, in text or voice, introduces a lower intelligence level into conversations. Yes, it can feel great when you stub a toe or a friend goofs up royally. Why the internet though?

most of everything that's needed to be said on the topic has already been said; but why the hell would we put in different words to substitute for the swears? that's even less appealing than what we have now.

Slang sensor? And again, no offence but your substitute.words are more unappealing than actual swears themselves. If this does happen to come too pass, just keep the profanity filter on. That way, you'll see the exact same thing you see now, and the forum won't have changed for you at all.

There is no way I'm having the phrase "dumb little Spongebob's" in ANY of my posts, anywhere. Even if I can't see it.

I mean no offense. I'm simply defending my point of view. At this point, It's pretty clear from the votes that swearing will soon be allowed. I'm going to drop the discussion on why or why not we should allow it if it's all fine with you. gg. Or whatever the debate equivalent is.

A toggle would allow people who don't mind swearing to see swearing and would allow those bothered by swearing to avoid seeing it. It would be customization depending on user choice, I don't see how that's much of a problem.

If we want to "protect" younger members, perhaps have the censor on by default when they join, and have announcements or little reminders that let them know that they can turn it off they want.

To answer maccrash and anyone else wondering about the progress on new swear censors:

Higher staff have decided to implement the change to the swear censors. Though we agreed to this, the change is something that Audy has to code in to the forums, and he is rather busy with real life and other PC matters.

Oh yes. Can't wait for this to be implemented. It'll be nice to not see this kind of topic on the front page every time I go to this subforum.
