I saw a word origins map a couple days ago that indicates there's quite a few languages where the root word in their language for it is soccer. Since soccer traces its roots back to "Association" anyway, you can really only blame the English for the word.

It's just a round robin world tournament for Soccer. That's really as simple as it gets.

After those matches are played, the two best teams from each group advance to the single-elimination part of the tournament, where each group's winner plays a runner-up from another group in the first round of that portion.
