Dana stepped aside as a deranged-maned unicorn and three huge stallions galloped by, pursued by a giant mechanical toaster that spewed fire and obscenities.

"...Huh, guess Lemon used one of Vinyl's...creations to attempt cooking. Probably hoped that the Wubergy would offset the usual eldritch abomination."

Dana blinked in disbelief and stared after the chaos. "That was a toaster?"

Starlight wandered after the tattered remains of the filly she had once prevented from performing a miracle, oddly entranced by the way her body constantly shed pieces of itself only for new - if dead flesh could ever be considered new - to take its place.

"What...happened to you?" Starlight asked, dreading the answer.

"Oh, the first Rainboom shattered my body. The second brought me back to the point of the first. A Loop within a Loop," the Element of Loyalty said with a raspy laugh.

Starlight winced. "I...I'm sorry, Rainbow. Really."

"Oh, it's not your fault. Double Rainbooms have always been risky. I can only pull them off without grievous bodily harm if I'm...well, you're going to forget this anyway, so might as well say it...if I'm an Alicorn."

Starlight blinked slowly. "What?"

Dash looked back at her with a sunken eye and smiled. "My friends and I...we're time travelers. It's a very long, very complicated, very boring story."

Starlight shook her head slowly. "I don't understand."

"Good, you don't need to."

Starlight looked around the landscape and blinked in surprise. "There's something out there."

"Of course. We're stubborn. It'll take more than two wars to kill us off. We've even managed to broker peace between us and Sombra. We give him a workforce, he keeps us alive. Unless you're too broken to work. My job is to pick up strays."

"Stray...you're going to sell me into slavery?!" Starlight yelped in horror.

"Of course not," Dash snapped. "I collect the strays that run away and bring them to safety." She laughed again, a sound Starlight was starting to fear. "Although, in this place, the world you helped create, we're never safe."

Her cerise eyes locked onto Glimmer's own.

"Like me, there's some things that don't stay dead."

Starlight and the husk of Rainbow Dash arrived at the edge of a thick forest, the only vegetation that the two had encountered. Dash looked up at the trees and smiled, a visage Starlight hoped would never be aimed at her.

"In here is the only place Sombra can't reach. He lost nearly half his army when the forest fought back," she said, voice melancholy. "Heh...one of Discord's last tricks. We owe a lot to him."

The cadaver turned to face Starlight and tilted her head, scrutinizing the Equalist for a moment before speaking.

"Inside this forest is the last bastion of pony civilization. The Yaks, Griffons, Breezies...even the Seaponies have left. That surprised everyone and we lost Lyra because of it." A scowl twisted Rainbow's features, teeth tearing through skin and muscle before vanishing behind a new layer of flesh. Rainbow sighed, a deathly rattle that caused Starlight to shiver involuntarily and shook her head. "You'll be safe here. Just walk forward and you'll find your way to them. Tell 'em Dashie sent you."

And then she smiled at Starlight, who offered a weak smile in return. 

"What about you?" Starlight asked. Dash had already turned to go and glanced at her with one eye that seemed to glow in the gloomy atmosphere. 

"Oh, I'll be fine. The shadows embrace their own, after all."

With another creepy smile, the soul case melted away.
