December is here, and you know what that means - Christmas is right around the corner! To celebrate this wonderful time of year, the Video Games forum is going to have 25 days of fun challenges and questions for you to answer!

WHAT'S THIS?

If you've ever had an advent calendar, this will function just like one (more or less) - on the calendar page, click the bauble for each corresponding day to reveal a challenge and question. And we know this is a busy time of year, so don't fret if you've skipped a few; you can always go backwards to complete any missed days.

PRIZES!

This year we will be holding a raffle for some gaming gift cards and colored usernames! Check out this announcement for the full details, but in short, the more tickets you earn, the higher your chances of winning a prize in the raffle will be, so get participating!

Ice Cavern - Spyro the Dragon (PSX, 1998)

Instead of using just a still image, I'll just post some gameplay video of said level. Credit to the uploader of said video. Anyway, Ice Cavern. Nostalgia speaking, Ice Cavern is one of those levels that I fondly remember for its music, the level design, and how satisfying it is to collect of all the gems, items, and the dragons.

Spyro 1's Ice Cavern is one of those levels that starts to remind you on how much more fun the game gets as you continue your adventure. Not to mention, the rather interesting set pieces and scenery in a cave is rather beautiful in this GEM of a game. I also remember Ice Cavern being one of those levels with some really challenging glide ledges that you need to do in order to complete said map a 100%. Also, it is the only level in the original Spyro game where it had slippery ground.

Also, Ice Cavern is part of the rather awesome collection of levels in the Peacekeepers Realm, that being one of my favorite realms in all of Spyro.

The Bioshock level Fontaine Fisheries (I believe that was the name). It has elements of horror and action, and overall has such a creepy but immersive mood that I can't help but like it.

I had to use my favorite freeze gun. Crysis' Molecular Arrestor (or the MOAR as it is more commonly known) I froze a few members of the Korean master race KPA but one of them was so weak he shattered all over the floor. Pathetic... I got a couple guys in the background too but they're hard to see...

Me: "Rex, you have been a very good Dogmeatshield i mean a very faithful ally and a very loving pet. Since you must be hungry from all the raiders, psychos, Legionnaires, Super Mutants, and even Deathclaws that we've been wiping out, you can finally have some of these delicious Big Horner steaks. Complete with the bone for you to play and gnaw it!"

Me: "Boone, you've been a great spotter, and a great marksman. But you need a much more powerful piece of weaponry than that wooden piece of junk you're carrying, so I give to you one of my Anti Material Rifles to further maximize your killing power"

What was your favorite/most memorable gaming-related gift that you received on Christmas (or another holiday if you don't celebrate Christmas)?

League of Legends related. I've been playing League of Legends for quiet a while but Season 3 was the actual start or the very first time i started playing on Ranked matches in said game. Sadly, despite my hardest efforts to climb higher and higher while still balancing out life, school, and obviously friends, I only reached Platinum 1 while i had friends who reached Diamond 1 and even Challenger tier, but they were already experienced in playing Ranked ques in previous seasons while I only started in Season 3, the good years of 2013. Master tier wasn't implemented in Season 3 so anyone at Diamond tier especially D1 were already considered to be badass climbers and Platinum tier was already considered to be a good tier and that's me just simply playing the game with the characters I enjoy and not giving a sh*t about what's "Strong in the meta". Anyway, I was a little pissed that Plat 1 was the tier that i ended my first ever venture into. So my friends somehow helped me feel better by giving me some RP (Microtransaction currency) so i could buy myself a few things to get ready for the next year, while having some bit of fun. It wasn't anything big like actual gifts, but the Riot Points (RP) was enough to cheer me up and tell myself that there's a few more seasons to come. Also, those same friends that gave me RP? They were my fellow Platinum plebs.

Its small things like this that make me appreciate the little things that some friends do to make sure you aren't as pissed off.

I have an extreme lack of games where I give people anything more than bullets, a sword edge, or the occasional incendiary grenade. Long story short I ended up having to reinstall the division please kill me now this game makes me salty as all f**k

Nice characters? I think I would have to choose Isabelle from Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Such a cute little thing, isn't she? Always cheerful and happy to help out whenever the mayor needs it! What's more is that she 'jingles' as she walks! I feel she brings a bit of flavour to the games that needed a breath of fresh air!

Second? Hancock. Yes. Hancock, the "Hey, this is me you're talking about . . . let me tell you somethin' " Hancock. From Fallout 4. Very funny guy, very nice and I'd say charming, even. Hey, who else but Hancock would stab someone for you without hardly knowing a thing about you? Only Hancock. And Gage. But Gage shoots everything that moves, so. . . Hancock built a place where the down trodden could retreat and regroup, especially the ghouls that were kicked out of Diamond City. Hey, there isn't many people I'd call flawless in the wasteland, but Hancock deserves a spot on the list to at least receive a few caps for his ability to stop Good Neighbor from imploding.

Hm . . . and Henry Blackburn from Battlefield 3. I understand he shot his commanding officer, but when it came down to trying to prevent nuclear destruction and the deaths of millions, he sacrificed his security and laid his credibility, reputation and life on the line. He even stopped a tactical nuke from detonating in Manhatten, how about them apples?

Once again, with Fallout New Vegas, i use my 3rd (actually my 2nd) character in "Tyler" the 6'5 5'6 Alpha Courier who's about to unleash his inner toxicity among some unlucky innocents in the Mojave. His actions are indeed going to make you wish for another nuclear winter.

Nice NPC #1 - Dogmeat from Fallout 4

My definition of nice for Dogmeat is as simple as the kind and unconditional love that this very animal shows to you from the moment he meets you, till the moment you fight your way into the end in your journey throughout the Commonwealth, as he stands by you, till living till death. I simply have a soft spot for German Shepherds and Dogmeat is a lovely animal to be around with.

Nice NPC #2 - VEGA from Doom 2016
Entry enters Spoiler territory

Spoiler:

Vega serves as the mouthpiece of the Doom Slayer throughout his adventure in Mars and Hell. As the Doom Slayer ravages through the hordes of the demon spawn, Vega, the Sentient AI that monitors the Doom Slayer's progress in combat is there to tell him what to do incase the Doom Slayer's sustenance through violence is somehow calmed down. Unlike the other NPC in the game, Samuel Hayden who despite siding with the Doom Slayer, his ulterior motive of providing Earth the necessary Hell energy it needs gets the best of him.

Vega on the other hand, understands why the Doom Slayer has such a violent temperament towards the Demon Kind. Because IT AGREES with him. The Doom Slayer is the only sane man who understands that man SHOULD NOT EVER WORK WITH DEMONS, EVER! The Doom Slayer's bloodthirst against the demonkind is justified that he knows that ultimately, men and demons SHOULD NOT EVER CO-EXIST. Vega, the Sentient AI somehow understood the Doom Slayer to the point that it accepted its fate of its own destruction in order to help shutdown the Hell Gates. However, since Vega has provided the Doom Slayer with such needed knowledge, and some information other than killing demons and people alike, The Doom Slayer in the end finds a way to make backup data for it, should the Doom Slayer need VEGA's help once again in his next adventure, and his mandatory revengeance against Samuel Hayden and the rest of the demons that are likely looking for their revenge as well.

For Vega, the sentient AI's niceness was manifested by giving the Doom Slayer the information needed and understanding that in order to ultimately end the problem, sacrifices must be made. Vega showed that it was willing to help end the problem by sacrificing itself by giving instructions to the Doom Slayer in how to destroy the VEGA Core, the very core that contains its data. The Doom Slayer, popularly known for his supreme ruthlessness, was willing enough to actually save such a nice Sentient AI, thus compassion was actually shown. Vega was THAT NICE to give the Doom Slayer something to care about other than doing what he does best, RIP AND TEAR!

Nice NPC 3 -> Well a collective group but w/e -> MOM, Pokemon games

Mom. Momma. Mother. The player character's mom is perhaps the single nicest character that our hero (that would be us players) would first meet in our journey, and the first character we talk to. The mothers in the pokemon games have always been the nicest people in the block, from loving you unconditionally, to simply being a healbot if needed, to talking to you about things, and providing something to care about. Despite us journeying to the land, and sending ourselves into something so dangerous such as hunting and catching wild animals that can CLEARLY KILL US if they had to, the mom is an understanding parent who knows of our goals, and supports us in whatever way that they deem helpful to us.

Nice NPCs

Numbah one shoutout goes to the mindless vendor zombies of Tower Unite, patiently staring straight through the wall and into the very soul of the universe, without ever blinking. It (as they are a collective hive-mind imo) doesn't make any stupid grumblings, tacky animations, or show any other sign of lack of patience while you're idle on the body pillow item wondering what character your going to stick on it. Also he has fair prices to boot!

Next guy is the Darkling from The Darkness II. Why he's a little s**t, he has his uses. He brings you equipment, sabotages the enemy, and seems to always show up when you need help. I guess he's also or once was British or something

And last but certainly not least, the Arbiter Thel Vadum' from the Halo Series. While he is much better as a player, as an NPC he is a loyal companion who can help turn the tide of a battle if you get over your head. He also gives you access to a bunch of support from the best species in Halo!

Favorite "Mount"

MV-24H Vulture - Crysis series

Room for a pilot, gunner, and 6 friendly ass-kickers in the back, the "VTOL" as it's more commonly known is the United States transport and gunship solution in the 2020s. Quad jet engines make sure you can get your cargo where you need in a hurry, and the default model comes with a minigun and heavy rockets.

Just saw this today so I'll answer the questions and hopefully get screenshots later.

Day 1 - What is your favorite snow/ice level in a video game? Cool, Cool Mountain from Super Mario 64. I love the slide. Its very easy to get the 100 coin star in that level.

Day 2 - What was your favorite/most memorable gaming-related gift that you received on Christmas (or another holiday if you don't celebrate Christmas)? I remember when I got a Gamecube for Christmas. Dad forgot to get a memory card, but my brother and I didn't care as we played Mario Cart Double Dash.

Day 3 - Name 3 NPCs that are at the top of your "nice list".

I wish playable party members could have counted. There was at least one I could have answered.

1. Nanako Dojima from Persona 4. She is so innocent and had to grow up slightly to try to make sure the house isn't a mess from the fact that her dad is gone quite a bit because he's a detective.

2. Hau. That boy should be on everyone's nice list. He so nice and he gives you items along the way to help you out. He wants to make sure your Pokemon are fully healed before he fights you. He is the nicest rival.

3. Link's grandma in Wind Waker. She's so wonderful. She's the one who gives Link his outfit, his sheild, and one of the best things in the game, Elixir Soup. She worries so much about Link and Aryll's well being that she gets sick and you have to use a fairy to heal her.

Day 4 - On the topic of sleigh-pulling and all that, what's your favorite mode of transportation in-game?

I really love the Tauros ride in Sun and Moon. :)

For day 4? Hmm. I am really diggin the new No Man's Sky update, and I love my Starship now that It's even better than ever! I can warp star systems, explore new worlds and shoot down pesky pirates that are raiding the freighters that I wanted to raid ohohoho! I rather enjoy the sense of freedom that it brings, along with the excitement of seeing new ships and various other vessels! Now with being able to purchase freighters, the game just got a bit bigger. I still think that game got a bad rap and had unrealistic expectations laid upon it. Better than ESO, and that had loads of people working it . . .

Game: Brutal Doom 64 (btw, PLAY THIS MOD/WAD. I highly recommend it)

These Barons of Hell really love to keep up with the holiday spirit by offering me a challenge as i fight my way into Brutal Doom 64. This is on map09 aka "Even Simpler", Doom 64's take on the Dead Simpler map mythos. Anyone who has played Doom 64 before may remember how rough that map was, now imagine that very map, in Brutal Doom terms.

what's your favorite mode of transportation in-game?

Shadow Harness/Runner - Dynasty Warriors series

The Shadow Runner, also known as the black horse, is one of the rare/unique mounts that the player can have in the Dynasty Warriors series. This horse wasn't known for its speed unlike the famous Red Hare, but it was known for offering its rider the resistance against being mounted off the horse. It either took you ages to be knocked off the horse, or in Dynasty Warriors 4 and 5, you couldn't be knocked off the horse at all.

In the earlier dynasty warriors games that featured the Shadow Runner, especially DW4 and DW5, the Shadow Mount enabled warriors such as Ma Chao and Zhou Tai to simply cheese through the game since the enemy AI reacted differently against mounted players, and said warriors excelled in mounted combat compared to the rest of the characters. The enemy AI's natural behavior against mounted players is to dismount them with jumping attacks or other attacks that would knock off the player, but since the Shadow Runner made the player IMMUNE to being knocked off the horse, this basically rendered the enemy trivial while Ma Chao or Zhou Tai would simply slice through the enemy swifter than a coursing river, with much more force than a great typhoon within the safety of their mount. So slap that Tiger Amulet, Wind Scroll, and that Horned Helmet and cut down those infantry and officers alike with superior horse power.

An even funnier abuse with the Shadow Runner, if for some reason you feel like riding Red Hare when playing a level that features Lu Bu or Guan Yu as NPCs, you could. You PASS THE SHADOW RUNNER'S EFFECT INTO RED HARE. So you have Red hare's speed but also the Shadow Harness' immunity from being knocked down from the mount.
