Story:
New York City is inhabited by a bunch of ghosts. They frighten everybody, except three courageous GHOSTBUSTERS. After a woman calls their help after seeing a ghost in her refrigerator, the three of them start a fight with everything that´s supernatural in order to free the city of ghosts.
Birgitte S.C.´s opinion:
Ghostbusters is a very witty comedy about the supernatural with a plot that is so rediculous that you just have to watch the movie to believe it. Dan Aykroyd got the idea for this film based on his experiences with the supernatural in his house when he was a kid.
The movie probably wouldn´t have worked so well if it wasn´t for the suberb cast. Especially Rick Moranis as the nerd accountant Louis Tully and Annie Potts as the secretary Janine are perfectly cast and in some scenes they even dominate the three main comedians Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis. Sigourney Weaver plays the only "normal" character (if you can call a woman with a demon calling "Zuul" in her refrigerator normal) between all the weirdos running around on the screen. Only towards the end of the movie she can show off her comedy talents when Dana gets possesed by Zuul, hovers 10 feet above her bed and ultimately turns into a hell hound together with Louis Tully.
When I first saw the movie I was about 11 years old and all I can remember from that is that the first ghost in the library (the friendly old lady who suddenly turned into a scary looking demon) scared the **** out of me. But apart from that I loved it.
At age 19 I saw the movie again and I found it still highly entertaining, mostly because you understand all the jokes this time. But apart from the library scene that may be a little bit too scary for children, Ghostbusters is a movie for the entire family to enjoy, which I find quite an achievement.
Two thumbs up for the Ghostbusters!!
