Route 33, Johto...
Gray walked along the tranquil path, the wind blowing his hair a slight bit. It was his fourth day on the job: Team Arcelago Commander. He hadn't been in Team Arcelago for long, perhaps only three weeks. But, his superior battling prowess had earned him a quick slot as Commander. However, the small team of grunts he was assigned with really didn't like him. At all. They all thought he was too nice, that he was forgetting his objective. Gray knew it, though. He knew that they talked about him behind his back. Upon his entrance to Azalea Town, Gray passed an old man standing by the Slowpoke well. He was a rather short, old man with traditional Johto clothing on. His bald head gleamed in the bright sunlight.
"Hey, Kurt. Did you ever finish my Fast Balls that you were working on?" Gray asked. Kurt was startled by Gray's voice, which broke the silence. Kurt turned to Gray quickly, but began to fall backward into the well. Gray realized this, and dashed forward, grabbing Kurt's hand. Pulling him up, Gray saved Kurt.
"What, are you tryin' ta kill me?" Kurt shouted, taking a step backward. Without realizing what he had done, Kurt's step backward owed him one fall into Slowpoke Well. In his reflexes, he grabbed Gray's arm, pulling him down into the well. "AAH!" Kurt shouted as he pulled Gray into the well. They both tumbled to the bottom, smashing into the hard, wet ground.
"Ow... what was that for?" Gray growled, sitting up and rubbing his back. He looked over to Kurt who had a very annoyed expression on his face.
"Dammit... second time that's happened to me!" Kurt shouted. He looked at Gray. "And it's all your fault. Help me up, quick. I can't move." Gray stood up slowly, hearing his back crackle a bit. He helped Kurt up, and they managed to scale the ladder after several minutes. After about twenty minutes, they made it outside.
"Regarding your Fast Balls, yes. I finished them. If you help me home, I'll give you your Fast Balls," Kurt managed to say over the wince in his face.
"Crap. That's all the way on the other side of town..." Gray thought to himself, putting his hand on his face in disappointment. But, he sighed. He had to since this was partially his fault. At least Kurt was a little man. He put Kurt's arm around the back of his neck, and acted as a crutch. It was then that Gray realized that Kurt's small stature was actually a bad thing. Gray had to bend down really far to help Kurt.
After they had made their way through the small village, two of the grunts that worked underneath Gray approached them. Gray stopped and looked at them.
"Oh great, here come your buffoons. How come they can't act more like you, Baron?" Kurt asked to Gray. Gray recalled that his nickname was 'Baron' at that moment. He had always been called that, since he was the best battler of his hometown.
"Baron, sir!" the two grunts chanted at the same time. They put their hands at their sides and stood tall. "Sir, another Commander is in Union Cave. The Commander says that she has direct orders for our unit and theirs to investigate deep within the cave," they explained. Gray's stomach dropped. Another commander? She? Gray had a hunch he knew who it was.
"Does this other commander happen to be 'Marren'?" Gray asked. After a second's delay, the grunts looked at each other, and nodded. Gray sighed. He desperately hated Marren. She was the Commander who was in his place before he took the spot. Ever since then, she hated him indefinitely. It was her ultimate goal to get rid of Gray, through any means.
"Sir, Marren's unit is at the Cave entrance in Route 33, waiting for us. We are to rendez-vous with them immediately," one of his grunts said. Gray sighed, and looked to Kurt, who was still using him as a crutch.
"It's fine, it's only a short distance from here to my house," Kurt said. "I understand that you have business to take care of."
Gray slowly let Kurt off on his own, and took his two grunts to the Arcelago base. It was located just south of the Azalea Gym that was lead by Bugsy. Inside of the base was dark and small. The single-room base was filled with computers, enough for the five grunts and Gray. As soon as Gray and his two grunts entered, the two grunts that were there stood up and saluted Gray. Gray looked around confusedly.
"Where's Earl?" Gray asked, noticing that one of the grunts was missing.
"Sir! Earl is gone on a coffee run, sir!" the two other grunts explained monotonously and in unison. Gray lowered his head and sighed. There always seemed to be something small that went wrong for him.
"Okay. Susan, you stay and wait for Earl. I want you two to remain at the base in case. Everyone else, let's get going!" Gray commanded. The small group of four (three grunts and Gray) made their way from central Azalea to Route 33. By this point, some clouds were beginning to roll in. The air was dense with moisture, and one could smell the storm on the way. Before long, Gray's group made it to the entrance of Union Cave. Surrounding the cave were five similar grunts, and a girl with dark, evil eyes and shining black hair. She wore a blood-red bandanna around her head, and similarly-colored clothing. She approached Gray.
"Listen, Gray Ciridian, this expedition is under MY control. You do what I say, and same for your pathetic grunts," the girl growled. Gray rolled his eyes.
"Okay, Marren. So what do you command, your highness?" Gray asked sarcastically.
"It's good to see you'll listen. I want your grunts to go deep into Union Cave. There's a hole in one of the walls that I took the courtesy of creating for you. We think there's a clue to the Cryptex there, but we're not sure. We need you to go in and scout for us," Marren explained.
"What about you?" Gray asked.
"We'll wait for your reply, in case it isn't safe," Marren asked, a devious smile forming on her cold face.
"Gee, thanks," Gray growled under his breath. He faced his unit. "Let's get going," he commanded. Gray walked past Marren and her grunts, enduring the belittling glares. They entered the cave, leaving the light of the overworld behind.
Suddenly, there was an eerie, ghastly growl that resounded from the depths of the cave. Gray looked back uneasily at the three grunts he brought with him. Forward, they began.
