The Explorers' Guild ☼ Mystery Dungeon Club

Yay im not the only one!
For me i tried like 11 times to get a chimchar just because him and Turtwig are the top rated ones is something but i just love chimchar the best and Turtwig is great support too. I actually thought about it yesterday and began playing explorers of time again! I forgot how fun this game is but ive found that the meanest word the pokemon use in the game is "those mean stinkers!" ~your partner
Haha i wish they had just a little less censoring :p

haha! yeah, i'm the same way with regards to soft resetting the test over and over... though it never took me too many tries to be honest c:
i always went with Eevee in Rescue Team, and Vulpix in Explorers... and i think i'd go with Snivy in Gates to Infinity. most of you have already mentioned which Pokémon they go with as player character, but let's just make this a proper topic and include some more.

Do you always choose the same Pokémon as Main and Partner? Which Pokémon are they, and why? Does it differ between games?
as for me, like i said: Eevee, Vulpix and Snivy as mains. and then, for partners... in Rescue Team, i always chose Charmander. in Explorers i've had several. the first time i chose Treecko.. so then i was really confused to find out Grovyle was actually in the story - for the longest time i thought they were secretly brothers or something (ノ>▽<。)ノ

Do you always choose the same Pokémon as Main and Partner? Which Pokémon are they, and why? Does it differ between games?

Yes! I absolutely always choose Bulbasaur as my player, with Charmander being my partner. Their absence in Gates to Infinity is quite depressing, which is one of the few reasons I haven't played it yet. If I had a choice between the GTI starters, I would probably play as Tepig and choose Snivy as my partner.

The Mystery Dungeon series is a great series, a bit of a crossover between two awesome things: Pokémon and Dungeons and Dragons.

Team Name: Team Without a Decent Name and an Even Worse Abbreviation (TWDNEWA for short), because I currently lack inspiration and it is a little similar to my Red Rescue Team team name, which I believe was Team Nameless.
A topic:

I have only played one Mystery Dungeon game: Red Rescue Team. This makes it quite trivial I always picked the same Pokémon. The test claimed me to be a Mudkip, which I accepted as my main Pokémon. I hadn't used Mudkip's evolutionairy family at the time and this seemed a good chance. As partner I wanted a Pokémon of one of the other two starter types, grass or fire. I picked Charmander in this place.

welcome, H.A.N.! haha, i think your team name works great c: i just put the abbreviation in the main post for shortness' sake, but i think this way it'll leave everyone wondering what it stands for (。 >艸<)

i just noticed that all three of us picked Charmander as a partner. is he just that popular or is this a massive coincidence? (ノ>▽<。)ノ i trust he served you as well as he did me.
does anyone else have any other partner or main characters not listed? did you ever want to go for a gender-exclusive Pokémon but couldn't? c:

I'm surprisingly not a big fan of Charmander, but I always picked him as my partner (with Bulbasaur as the player) for the good old memories of my first Red Rescue Team playthrough. Plus, I always loved the picture in my avatar, as it almost makes my team feel a bit more iconic, if you know what I mean. xD

The first time I ran through RRT I was Mudkip and my partner Pikachu. Then I did it like the Manga of RRT and did Torchik and Mudkip as my partner and then I did Pikachu and Bulbasaur lastly. I can admit I fudged the test a couple times, but I've never tried Charmander as a partner.

aah, i do i do! to have official art of your team is definitely a cool thing, and it makes it feel like you really accomplished something, no? c: i for example also tried to make my team iconic by kinda emulating the existing Team ACT from Rescue Team with my own 'Team ACE': Aron, Charmander and Eevee, later to become Aggron, Charizard and Espeon! (。 >艸<)

i see! you've had quite the variation in teams then c: i really hope you can try out Explorers of Sky too sometime, since it added quite a few interesting playable additions, like Riolu and Shinx!

so, after the Easter hiatus it's reeeeally time for a new topic i'd say:
What is your favourite Dungeon in all of the games, and why?

I'm not sure actually. I know I wanted a grass or fire Pokémon to join Mudkip. I think I picked Charmander because Charizard would be immune to Swampert's Earthquake, which I eventually didn't learn. Charizard was a great partner Pokémon, its Heat Wave was of some great use on floors that consisted of only one room, clearing the entire floor with just one attack.

What is your favourite Dungeon in all of the games, and why?

Hmm, that one's a real toughie. I can only give a rough answer until I look through all of the dungeons again, but for now I'd probably say the Temporal Tower. Due to the events that lead up to the dungeon, I usually feel a huge emotional drive to brave through it with everything I've got. Not to mention, the music feels so climatic that it gives the dungeon a more "urgent" atmosphere, which both complements its placement in the story and separates it from any other dungeon that you'd normally complete for the heck of it. As for its difficulty, I'd say it was perfectly reasonable – not too easy, but not ridiculously difficult either.

whoa, impressive! i don't think i ever managed that, but it's also cause i've never actually evolved my Charmander into Charizard yet ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ but i'm working on it with my current playthrough of Rescue Team! it's already a Charmeleon at least, hehe.
if you were to play through Explorers of Sky (taking that example because of its larger initial selection), which Pokémon do you think you would you choose as starter and partner? c:

yeah, i totally get why the question is a difficult one - there's so many dungeons to choose from, after all! Temporal Tower is a great choice, though. i think for everyone, it's one of the most memorable dungeons, and the music as you said is great as well. there's a real sense of urgency, and because you visit it after going through all those hardships, leading up to a climax... it's definitely that much more awesome! music in the spoiler for those curious!
Spoiler:

as for me... because i'm playing Rescue Team again at the moment, i think i'll take my favourite from that game. the first one that came to mind for me (after reading yours probably, haha) is Sky Tower, since like Temporal Tower, it's kinda the climax of the game. the music i like a lot too, though it's not quite as 'epic' as Temporal Tower's. i especially like how in the beginning you can hear that bit in the background that sounds like a choir? i'm not sure that it is really, but it always reminds me of Golden Sun when i hear it, haha!
Spoiler:

secondly, i'll mention Lapis Cave. i don't know, but i like that one a lot. it is the first dungeon you get to after the story really gets going, and you have to flee from your former home with your partner. the music in Lapis Cave really suits it, with the high 'plinks' of the shimmering cave, but as times passes the music gets more and more scary and urgent as enemy Pokémon wait around every corner. luckily the dungeon itself is relatively easy to get through though, as it has few corridors and generally large rooms. c:
Spoiler:

for all those who haven't answered the topic yet, i'd really like to hear about your favourite dungeons! you don't have to go through all dungeons to give an answer - just what was most memorable to you is perfectly fine ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

That is hard to answer. It would be either Chikorita, the only of the Pokémon from the first three generations I haven't much used in any of the games (aside Meowth, but I don't really feel like playing with Meowth as main character), or one of the fourth generation Pokémon. From that I think I'll choose Shinx. And probably either Chikorita or Turtwig as partner.

I think I choose the Western Cave from Rescue Team. It is a large dungeon with a good amount of obtainable experience on the higher floors and there appear some Kecleon Shops to rob every time.

By the way, your YouTube videos don't show up sadly.
EDIT: They're fine now.

Hearing those musics brings me completely back into the game, especially the one from the Lapis Cave. I can suddenly see the dungeons and Pokémon appear and move around in my mind just as clearly as when I'm actually playing the game. It's just scary.

woops! thanks for pointing that out. i fixed them now! c:
ah, i like it! Shinx and Chikorita or Turtwig. it's really nice to use Pokémon you haven't before and kind of get to know them, no?
you have some serious guts for robbing Kecleon Shops, though! aren't Kecleon insanely powerful? but i suppose to get to Western Cave you'd already have a very high level already, eh?

if you can see the Pokémon walking around when listening to the music, you must really be a great Mystery Dungeon fan c: great to have you on board of the club!

Wow, I can't believe Lapis Cave slipped my mind! But yeah, you're right. My heart always hurt for the player/partner whenever we traveled through that dungeon, so the emotional drive was almost as strong as the Temporal Tower's. And I can totally see why you like the Sky Tower! It gives off a certain vibe in which you know the game is going to end, but you don't want it to, haha. (Not only that, but I also thought it was one of the prettier dungeons in the series, ehehe.)

And since we happen to be talking about the music as well, I always found Craggy Coast's theme to be sooo catchy, haha. I also liked Blizzard Island's theme simply because it's a medley of the Rescue Team dungeons, which was quite nostalgic in a nice way (especially the Sky Tower part of the medley). =D

Here's the music, if anyone is interested:

Oh, and yes... Kecleon IS insanely powerful. O_O

True, I admit the my levels are indeed high, I'm a level 100 Swampert. I don't know about my partner, Charizard, his level was somewhat lower, but I don't know how much. Robbing Kecleon shops is a nice challenge and not even that hard when you plan your things out. First of all you must know where the stairs to the next floor are located. That is you safehouse. If the shop is next to this room, it's only a short run, but if you have to search the entire floor there's a good chance you won't survive that. Secondly you can use status moves in advance. Using agility to max out your speed even before you actually rob the shop, helps you fleeing away more quickly. But still with a level 100 Pokémon the Kecleon might provide some trouble. Their Fury Swipes can be quite strong, certainly when its stats are raised by Ancientpower. Last of all, a backup escape plan helps too. Having an Escape Orb or that one that teleports you to the stairs gets you out of troublesome situations.

I have to admit I haven't played it in a while. But the games are extremely addicting, so yes, I played it quite a lot. Still, I think the biggest Mystery Dungeon fan around here is Revise Librarian.

The highest level I ever got to was a level 80 something Piplup and Chikorita, but my sister had a level 100 Totodile....
But I used to rob Keckleon stores all the time. XD I'd go to Mystifying Forest and take my partner,at least two pure seeds, maybe some reviver seeds, and just go for it. Even though I rarely actually evolve the pokemkn it always felt great to get a sun stone or something haha. The fun y thing is that even if you steal an item from them, you can still sell it to them back in Treasure Town as if you found it fairly. XD

As for favorite dungeon, I'm not sure. But I can say I hate the dungeons that had no walls so Ghost types would come in. Like Azurill's Nightmare or some of the future ones in PMD2.

whoa, great. i should bookmark this if ever i need a strategy for robbing Kecleon Stores. such a pro (ノ>▽<。)ノ did you also manage to recruit Kecleon? i seem to remember reading somewhere that that was possible...
Revise is definitely a great member as well, but like mimi said, it takes devotion to get your Pokémon to level 100 too! i haven't ever managed that. not even in a main series game... hehe ( ´ ▽ ` )ゞ

holy moly, i seem to have completely missed your sign up! i'll add you to the first post straight after this. weird, cause i was already used to you being a member (ノ>▽<。)ノ
level 80 is still an impressive feat! i have to wonder though - why didn't you evolve your Pokémon at such high levels? surely you played out the main story by then. seeing as how you (and HAN) are also Kecleon Shop Robbers... perhaps you should be known as high-rank outlaws rather than rescuers hm?!

i recognize your annoyance with the Ghost Types though... how they can move through walls is one thing, but then they can attack you from inside the wall and you can't do anything to return fire! especially on escort missions when ghosts would sneak up on your client. ARGH

finally; since we're listening to music and all, i'd like to point you towards my latest discovery (that everyone else probably already knew, lol): Glitch City's PMD Remixes! ah, particularly this one i thought was amazingggggg. but also for example the Temporal Tower Remix was great c:

I don't know, PMD is the only game I don't like evolving them. XD I probably should have thought of that though lol.
Spoiler:

Or when you have no more Reviver Seeds and your partner keeps trying to attack a Ghost who's in the wall. And you have to say 'Woah Chikorita, I'm changing your tactic to Run Away, and taking away all your moves, you need to stop that.'

That music is so pretty!~ I like the part where it plays music

No, I never managed to do that, but it's another reason to try robbing the store. I've read it was possible, but the chance was terribly low. You needed to have a Pokémon of at least level 90 holding a Friend Bow and still then the chance was small.
EDIT: I looked it up. Having a Pokémon of at least level 90 holding a Friend Bow, will give a chance of 0.1% of recruiting a Kecleon (or 1.1% if your Pokémon has the skill Fast Friend).

i recognize your annoyance with the Ghost Types though... how they can move through walls is one thing, but then they can attack you from inside the wall and you can't do anything to return fire! especially on escort missions when ghosts would sneak up on your client. ARGH

Those things are really annoying, because you have to beat them, or they'll just keeping attack you. But walking away, may result them following you in the wall, so annoying. But playing as a ghost yourself, doesn't work out pretty well. Walking through walls makes you hungry very quickly and that's problematic.
