The Explorers' Guild ☼ Mystery Dungeon Club

I'm going to do the test, but reset the game and play as Snivy anyways. XD How can I pass up the test??

Hahaha, I never even thought about doing that! But still, it's a very good idea, and I guess I'm pretty curious to see who I'd end up with as well. xP

Heyyy Thief, welcome aboard! ^^

This I've gotta agree with 100%!

Yep, I find that pretty disappointing too. I'm not even sure why it would take that long to release it in Australia and Europe when the game has already been practically translated in English. (Maybe the coding of the game might vary between regions, but I can't confirm that sadly.)

You're not alone on waiting, though! Despite the fact that I live in the U.S, I highly doubt that I'll be able to get the game on its release date. In fact, I have no clue when I'll be able to get it at all, ahaha.

Well, Europe consists of more languages than just English, since we have France/Spain/Germany etc. It's just a shame the UK can't be treated as separate when it comes to things like this, since we are a purely English-speaking country (so is Australia actually, I think?) and we're not even connected to the EU mainland. But ah well, 'good things come to those who wait', right? :P Hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

And I love the personality tests so I'll definitely be going with that just to see who I get, but I'll probably go with Osha for me, with Riolu (maybe Bulby) as my partner. I always loved the Vulpix/Riolu combo in T/D/S but it looks like they're going with almost all starters this time around (although the choice variety is nowhere near as horrendous as the GTI ones, jeez). Does anyone know if certain 'Mons are gender-locked still? One of my friends said something about us being able to choose the gender of your partner, so if that's true, I'd guess male players aren't locked out of playing as Chikorita now etc.

Also, I wish there was some way of transferring the PMD 'Mons to our main series games. I know it'd be a bit weird since they talk in PMD and our own character is human, but I still think it'd be nice if we could see them in Amie and whatnot. xD

Oh, oops! I totally forgot to consider that. xD Still, I find it pretty weird that the UK has to wait for the other translations, unless the game will have multi-language support or something (like a lot of European releases I've seen before).

I've always wanted to try Riolu myself, but unfortunately I never got around to doing so, simply because there are a ton of other starters who I also wanted to pick (and frankly, I haven't been able to try most of them either XD).

One day, I wish we could have multiple save slots, as I don't really have the heart to delete a precious adventure log. ;_; Of course, buying another copy is always an option, but my wallet would scream at me haha. :p

Spoiler: Maybe this video will help!

While it's technically not confirmed, I think it's safe to assume that you can pick their genders. In the video above (at around 3:02) when the person is picking their partner, the game asks "If you were to give them a compliment, what would it be?" The only options are "Cool" and "Cute," so let's hope that's actually referring to the Pokémon's gender, which it's almost implying. :D

Haha, that would be pretty neat! Unfortunately, the reason it seems unlikely is because the Mystery Dungeon games are developed by Chunsoft rather than Game Freak, and it's Game Freak who produces the main series. That being said, they more than likely use a completely unrelated data structure in their games. :c

Yeah, I mean even if the game does have multi-language, so did XY and that was a worldwide release (I can't bring myself to even think about what they did to us poor Europeans in regards to waiting for ORAS... for a week longer than the entire rest of the world :c). I really thought the days of waiting months between releases were far behind us though, for any game franchise. I'm honestly surprised we aren't getting PMD for at least 2 months after the US, but hey, what can ya do.

I patiently await the day a Poochyena or some other Dark type makes the ranks of potential PMD-starter choices. :P Froakie is the closest we've got right now but not the kind of 'Mon I really see myself playing as, as much as I love the fully-evolved ninja frog.

But yeah, multiple saves would be perfect. I never had that problem with T/D/S since I have all three versions, so 3 save files. But I only had 1 save for Blue Rescue Team, never had Red Rescue Team, and didn't bother with GTI past the demo.

... Man, I'm really in the mood to restart all of my PMDs now. Shame there aren't really enough people active around here for us to do a mass restart or something. xD

Thanks for explaining the video, since that's probably the one my friend watched and I'm trying to avoid as many major spoilers or gameplay vids as possible haha. The cool/cute thing makes sense actually, since in Animal Crossing: New Leaf (entirely different franchise lol, but still), the character at the start of the game says your name (or something) is either cool/cute - in reference to your gender, and you get a chance to either agree with or correct him. Haven't started a new file on that in a while so I can't remember the exact wording, but those were definitely the two adjectives that were used. xD Maybe it's a translation thing.

Oh right, I didn't think about the different studios. Eh, I'm sure I'll live haha, would've been interesting to see some integration of some sort with the main series though.

Since we're on a new page now, I'm just gonna post this topic again if anyone has missed it on the last page:

In Super Mystery Dungeon, you can choose to either handpick your starter or take the personality quiz. Which method will you use, and which Pokémon do you hope to play as?

It's also too bad that you can't import the game, due to all of the region-locking shenanigans and whatnot. I think I heard a rumor that there was a way to bypass it, but I never really did extensive research on the matter, so I don't even know if it's true or not. The sadder part is that the GBA and the original DS systems had no region-locking at all, so it makes me question why they decided to curse the 3DS (of all things) with it. :c

I would actually join in if we all decided to do that! It would be awesome to feel the excitement of Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky's story all over again, and hopefully keep it fresh in my mind. (Though that means I would need to get ready to cry yet again...) ;_;

Haha, no problem! And the funny thing is, I actually saw a post on another website comparing the cute/cool thing in Super Mystery Dungeon to Animal Crossing, just as you did. xD But hey, they're both from Nintendo at least! :D

Oh right, I didn't think about the different studios. Eh, I'm sure I'll live haha, would've been interesting to see some integration of some sort with the main series though.

Who knows, maybe one day they might give Mystery Dungeon its own version of Amie. :P That would certainly be interesting to play around with!

Heh, well, I did recently discover a way to bypass it, but I had no use for that function since I've never wasted money on a region-locked game. Unfortunately it's been patched within the last week now, though.

& Yeah it's frustrating, they decided to region-lock their most expensive console/games yet (well, aside from the U) whereas Sony and Microsoft haven't region-locked this gen at all. I've never bothered with Xbox but I do love Sony. Not as much of a Nintendo fan these days, but I still love 'em for their handhelds and Pokémon/AC/LoZ.

Well hey, if anyone-else here voices some kind of agreement, maybe we could get something going before everyone gets SPMD. xD But tell me about it lol, I've never cried at any videogame before except the PMD series (and maybe Axel's 'death' in KH2... ahem). That's part of the reason I can't bring myself to play GTI, since I don't think it'll have that same impact and it might sour my view of the series slightly. If only the main series could have such emotional/driven stories - I think Gen 5 did the best so far for that, but still no match for PMD.

Haha, no problem! And the funny thing is, I actually saw a post on another website comparing the cute/cool thing in Super Mystery Dungeon to Animal Crossing, just as you did. xD But hey, they're both from Nintendo at least! :D
Oh, glad to know I'm not making stuff up from tiredness at nearly 3:30am lol.

Who knows, maybe one day they might give Mystery Dungeon its own version of Amie. :P That would certainly be interesting to play around with!

Yeah, it's probably something that's great in theory but not so much in practice. :P As much as I'd enjoy something like that, I suppose it rather clashes with the fact everyone is a talking Pokémon and friends with each-other. They seem less of pets in PMD and more humanised.

Btw (casually stalked your profile for all of 30 seconds), is your birthday really on 06/06/1996? xD Mine's 02/02/1996, so I've always loved having mine on the same number for both day and month haha.

Aw, dang. :/ Was the patch from an official Nintendo update? I haven't updated my 3DS in forever, so I can't be sure haha. But if so, another exploit may pop up sooner or later, if you're lucky that is. xD

And yep, it's pretty ironic how we get region-locked now when it finally feels like the Pokémon Company (and even Nintendo as a whole) is starting to become more globally united than they were before. Let's just hope that all of this region-locking was a bad experiment and will be done away with for the next handheld. :p

Sounds good! Let's give it some time and see if anyone else comments on this. :D

But omg yeah... I've never cried at a video game before either, yet Explorers of Time/Sky managed to have me crying more than once for Arceus' sake! (To make things worse, the soundtrack hit me right in the feels...) Aside from the main story, the most unexpected tears came from "Igglybuff the Prodigy," one of those special episodes. If anyone hasn't tried it yet, I really recommend doing so! ^.^

Regarding GTI's plot, I have no clue how it turns out either, considering I haven't played it yet. I understand that it would be incredibly difficult to top the Explorers games' story, but I definitely hope that it's at least at Rescue Team's level (which is pretty simplistic itself). Upon replaying the Rescue Team games a while back, I admit the story wasn't "the greatest," but it was still nice, likable, and most importantly, consistent.

Oh that's right haha, I forgot that your Pokémon are sorta treated more like pets in the main series, which would make Amie a bit awkward. xD

As for other main series features that could be incorporated, I think it would be amazingly awesome if Mystery Dungeon had more global interaction (like the Player Search System in X/Y). This is only a rough idea, so I'm not yet sure how it would be executed, but imagine if you had the ability join other players' guilds around the world (after beating the main story of course), and once you reach a certain rank, you would be able to make a guild of your own. One can dream, right? :D

(And yep, that's my real birthday! I know how that feels, hehe.)

Do you have seen all of the PMD anime specials before? Which one of them is your favorite, and why?

I've only seen the first. I like the Pokémon as characters a lot more than the human characters from the regular anime. It's a shame they haven't made a full series, because those one-off episodes don't have enough plot as I'd like to see. Comparing the PMD games with the main series raises your expectations regarding the plot and story.

Serperate release dates are too annoying.... They shouldnt even be allowed..... *sob*

Agree, translations shouldn't be a reason to split everything up, they didn't do that with XY or ORAS, so why do they have to do this?

In Super Mystery Dungeon, you can choose to either handpick your starter or take the personality quiz. Which method will you use, and which Pokémon do you hope to play as?

If I would have the game at this very moment, I would probably just pick Fennekin, because it's an adorable Pokémon and I really want to play with it sometime. But personality tests are a fun thing too, it made me play with Mudkip which I hadn't used before and possibly wouldn't for some time otherwise.

Also, I wish there was some way of transferring the PMD 'Mons to our main series games. I know it'd be a bit weird since they talk in PMD and our own character is human, but I still think it'd be nice if we could see them in Amie and whatnot. xD

PMD is a separate universe, I think, but that doesn't mean it's necessary impossible. XY and ORAS take place in an alternative universe also, yet it's not impossible to get a third generation Pokémon all the way to Gen VI. Maybe make one special Pokémon available through Super Mystery Dungeon in the main series, you know, like they did with Manaphy and Ranger.

While I'm not absolutely sure, I believe I've read somewhere it will be possible to go on a rescue mission together with other players and form a party of multiple player characters. It's getting close, right?

Ooh, cool! Who do plan on picking as your partner, then? And if you do decide to go with Mudkip, would your choice of a partner change?

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Manaphy from Ranger! xD In that case, you bring up a good point here.

The only problem is that Ranger was developed by "Creatures, Inc." and HAL Laboratory, which are both affiliated with Nintendo, while Spike Chunsoft (the developer of Mystery Dungeon) is independent from Nintendo. Ah, well. Maybe they might work something out in the future!

While I'm not absolutely sure, I believe I've read somewhere it will be possible to go on a rescue mission together with other players and form a party of multiple player characters. It's getting close, right?

That's a cool feature for sure! It's only a matter of time before we'll be able to have real guilds online, I hope! Now of course, we're gonna have to pray that Super Mystery Dungeon sells really well, so that they can use their profit to make more Mystery Dungeon stuff. :D

Patched with the lastest firmware update unfortunately, yeah. Can't access the internet browser now, so got no choice but to update.

Y'know, now that I think about it, I'm not entirely sure I ever finished Sky (at least not the very ending & the special episodes - although I vaguely remember the Igglybuff one). Should probably get on that. Might restart in a couple hours, feel free to join me at some point if you've not got much else to do. xD

Oh, that's interesting. I loved the Rescue Team storyline, most notably the fugitive/runaway part. The similar part in T/D/S (trying to escape the future) is also my favourite bit of those games. :P Gotta love the intense scenes. Granted, it wasn't as amazing as TDS, but was absolutely taken with it when I first played it. xD

Yessssss. Guilds would be amazing.

Did you ever see that site (a Dutch-owned site, I think) that let you register your Rescue Team and accept/request rescue missions from other players via passcodes? It was one of my favourite things for a while but like all good things, it ended. :c

Aw, that's unfortunate. Now that I think about it, importing probably wouldn't be the best idea anyway, since periodic updates would be quite disruptive to the gameplay experience, unless you can somehow manage without updating. Waiting for the local release might be painful, but it should feel a bit more rewarding once you're able to play it, right? :D

Cool, I might be able to join in sometime next week after Wednesday or so. I'll only be able to play for like a few minutes a day (maybe up to half an hour if I'm lucky), but I guess that's better than nothing. xD

Though before I restart it, I think I should at least play through some of the special episodes that I've never touched before, like the Bidoof and Sunflora ones. :P

Yup, I loved that whole plotline too! It was by no means bad at all, but it was just a lot more simplistic compared to T/D/S, with noticeably less setup and and character development. Of course, it still had character development and plot setup, which was executed pretty nicely, so I'm definitely not gonna overlook it hahaha.

Ah, I've actually never seen that before! It sounds cool though, and it reminds me of one of those online services (can't remember exactly) in the Generation V Pokémon games. Speaking of which... I'm also guilty of using a Wondermail Generator when I really wanted a certain item or teammate, and luckily those generators are still up somewhere. xD

Typing on iPad now, so here's one chunk of text instead of direct replies. :p

But yeah, I wouldn't go through the hassle of importing without having a reliable method to actually play it. Waiting sucks but eh, at least the rest of Europe and Australia will suffer along with me. xD

I'm gonna grab my game in a sec~

And wondermaiiiiiiiiiiil. Love those generators. I'll be surprised to find anyone who didn't use them tbh (unless they didn't know they existed). They were so helpful.

YES. The cool thing is that you can freely choose to make the mission more challenging if you feel like you want to "earn" the reward. :D Plus, all recruited Pokémon are level 1, so you're gonna need to work to train them anyway. :P

(I personally love getting the Goggle Specs through Wondermail, since it can be aggravating to wait for it to randomly appear. xD)

Hey, I've got an idea! What if we (along with anyone who else who wants to join) decide to write "journal logs" about our adventure as we progress through the game? Basically, we'll just record what we've accomplished (along with our thoughts on the story) each time we stop playing for the day, and post it here. Even though consecutive posting isn't allowed, you can just edit your last post, or keep track of your progress on a text document and wait until you make your next post in this thread. Everything will be in a spoiler tag to avoid spoilers and space-clogging. ^.^

Of course, it shouldn't interrupt the flow of discussion. Just discuss things with other members normally, and whenever you have a log that you wanna post, add something like this to the end of your post:

[SPOILERtitle=Journey Log #X]
So I met my partner, got a few new items, learned a new move, etc...
[/SPOILERtitle]

...which should come out as:

Spoiler: Journey Log #X

So I met my partner, got a few new items, learned a new move, etc...

No one has to do this if they don't want to, but I was thinking that it could possibly make things a bit more unique! c:

Although I did work for many of them, many were B1F Beach Cave recruits. xD Sometimes I was too impatient. My favourite missions were always the ones where you had to rescue a Mon, though.

And that's perfect. :D I used to do that kind of thing with a group of my online friends a few years ago, but most of them have drifted away from Pokémon now (at least the spinoffs). Even if other people aren't up for it, I'll do it anyway. xD Currently taking the quiz to get the right starter, will update properly when missions begin.

EDIT: Oh and I just double checked, but apparently SOS passcodes still work even though the DS wifi servers were shut down, so with any luck we can just post a code here for help if we need to. :p

Haha, I also do that a lot, especially when I'm in a rush. xD The only difference is that [quick tip incoming] I generally do it on Mt. Bristle or Waterfall Cave on Floor 2 (heck, even the later dungeons are fine), because that will give you more money and/or rank points. :D

And yep, I like those types of missions too, along with outlaw missions (which I find pretty awesome). However, I'm not a big fan of missions where you need to bring your client with you, because I get really scared that they're gonna die on me or something, haha. :P

Ah, neat! Glad you're in favor of the idea! :D Since you're starting first, I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got! ^.^

Sounds cool! I've surprisingly never tried the SOS system before, but maybe I can experience it for the first time during this run! ^^

Oh, that's cool. I haven't played in a while so I'll take advantage of that. :P

Yeah I know what you mean, and they use up all my Revival Seeds. xD I like the Outlaw Missions too but I rarely go higher than C rank.

Probably gonna do it more event by event style, rather than a diary or something. xD

Spoiler: Team Lunaralos's Journey Log #001

- Me as Vulpix & Sven the Riolu - Marine Blue Aura / Cobalt Bow
- Managed to get through Beach Cave despite nearly starving (was trying to gain as much EXP as possible); both reached Level 7 before we left.
- Joined Wigglytuff's Guild as Team Lunaralos.
- Retrieved Spoink's Pearl without any problems.
- Used the reward money and sold our Special Band so we could buy a Revival Seed from the Kecleon Brothers (I hoard Revival Seeds in case of emergency lol).
- Most recent mission was in Mt. Bristle to rescue Azurill and capture Drowzee - both I and Sven ran out of PP around 2 floors before the end (gaining EXP again), so had to make use of some sticks and rocks. :P Accidentally threw a Geo Pebble at Drowzee instead of using my set move (Feint Attack), so he used Confusion and basically OHKO'd Sven - in other words, that Revival Seed we bought came in handy. Wish it wasn't wasted on that though. Found tons of Gummis by this point but none for me/Sven, so they're all in Kangaskhan Storage.

Really? It was one of my favourite features in the originals but I don't think I had the opportunity to use it much in TDS.

Ah, that too. I shouldn't forget about Reviver Seeds, because those are definitely really important haha.

And yeah, the higher-ranked Outlaw missions can be pretty difficult if they summon Monster Houses, but I always make sure to have at least one Foe-Hold Orb or Petrify Orb on hand no matter what, since those are indispensable for dealing with Monster Houses. :P (Though the most annoying outlaws are the ones who try to escape, especially if they're Ghost-types. <_<)

Probably gonna do it more event by event style, rather than a diary or something. xD

So it finally begins, huh? Nice! I was actually planning on formatting it like this, too. xD

I noticed that you level-grinded quite a lot, hehe. That's not a bad thing, as it will certainly give you the upper hand later on, but I think I'm usually slower than that with my team's levels, aha.

Jeez, now I can't wait to start myself... If I can't hold my temptation, then at the very least I'll probably take the personality test to see what I get. I am pretty picky with my starters though! :P

Really? It was one of my favourite features in the originals but I don't think I had the opportunity to use it much in TDS.

I've never seen that feature in action before since I've never fainted in a dungeon, and I think I soft-resetted during the very few times when I came close. xD However, the concept of SOS always seemed really cool to me, so I'm actually hoping that I can see it in use at least once. :D

Edit on November 5, 2015:
Well, it looks like I finally had a bit of time to start Explorers of Sky again! Now it's time for me to write one of those Journal Log things. xD (If this somehow becomes a problem for the club, then I'll make sure to stop posting these here!)

Spoiler: Team Xros Heart's Journey Log #001
Advent:
  • Took the personality test; got Totodile... and soft-resetted. xD
  • Took the personality test again; got Mudkip... and soft-resetted again.
  • Took the personality test for the third time; got Chimchar, and... you guessed it. I soft-resetted. :p
  • Took the personality test one last time, and got... a Pikachu! I decided to stick with it! ^.^
  • Set my Top-Screen options to "Map and Team," which I highly recommend to everyone.

Player: Taiki the Pikachu
Partner: Akari the Chikorita
Team Name: Xros Heart

Accomplishments:
  • Cleared Beach Cave with both team members at Level 7
  • Retrieved Spoink's pearl, while getting both team members to Level 8
  • To be continued!

Comments:
  • Koffing and Zubat were so easy, haha. I started the battle with Growl so they could move toward me, and then my team proceeded to wipe them out in a single sweep!
  • The bubble scene where the player forms a team with the partner felt pretty nostalgic... ;_;
  • Wow, Chatot was pretty rude. But I guess I forgive him since I remember how his character development turned out! :3
  • Also, I could've sworn that we were supposed to start at Level 1 haha, but I guess not. xD

In Super Mystery Dungeon, you can choose to either handpick your starter or take the personality quiz. Which method will you use, and which Pokémon do you hope to play as?

I think I might have a different set of teams unlike the last time in Gates To Infinity (Pikachu and Oshawott), and it will be partly chosen manually instead of by quizzes because I have some of it set in stone after I saw the glimpse of the story in Nintendo Treehouse, so I'll gonna pick Chespin as my partner. I'm still not sure what to choose as myself as of yet, though.

Ooh, Chespin's a really nice choice for the partner! The partner character is usually the louder and more exciting kind of person, who isn't afraid to speak what they're thinking. And as we've both seen in the anime, Manon's Chespin and Citron's Chespin both fit that description pretty well, so it's natural to imagine Chespin being the partner! ^.^

I really can't wait to see Mega Evolution in the new games. Seems really cool. 8)

Hey! Cool to see you joining us here! :D

I'm also pretty excited about Mega Evolution, but there's something that I feel is worth speculating about. Mega Evolution is considered the "bond between humans and Pokémon," but as we know, the Mystery Dungeon series is generally about the Pokémon themselves. That being said, do you have any cool ideas on how they might implement this?

As for me, I think that since the player character is usually a human who transformed into a Pokémon, it is more likely that only the player and partner will have access to Mega Evolution due to their strong bonds with each other. However, the main problem is that they usually stay unevolved until after the story has ended, so there's still plenty of room for speculation. :p

Spoiler: Team Xros Heart's Journey Log #002
Player: Taiki the Pikachu
Partner: Akari the Chikorita
Team Name: Xros Heart

Accomplishments:
  • Saved Azurill from Drowzee at Mt. Bristle
  • Cleared 3 missions at Drenched Bluff in one sitting
  • Got both team members to Level 10
  • Found a ton of Sleep Seeds and Stun Seeds, which will surely come in handy later
  • To be continued!

Comments:
  • Drowzee was pretty easy! All it took was a Thunder Wave to paralyze him, and then our team proceeded to swarm our attacks on him.
  • Oh, man! Looks like a Time Gear has been stolen! They're definitely setting up the plot here.
  • I'm sad that we get stripped of 90% of our reward money... like, it really sucks. :/
  • It also doesn't help that Kecleon's prices are a ripoff, plus he buys your items at a ridiculously unreasonable price. xD

Maybe we'll learn in this game that you don't need a human to do it? Considering the world the Pokémon live in is a pretty different place, maybe the rules of Mega Evolution are different in that case.

You could be right, considering that Rayquaza is shown to be able to Mega Evolve without a human in the anime. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Mega Rayquaza ended up being a boss of some sort. xD

Anyway, I think it's appropriate to post a new discussion topic for now:
What are your favorite Orbs/Seeds in the Mystery Dungeon games, and why? If you don't have any particular favorites, which ones do you find yourself using more often than others?
