The Great Video Game Music Challenge! [Over!]

Day 2 - The theme of a boss that killed you repeatedly

Bravely Folk Song. Yes. That title is dedicated to the names of all the young gamers that Cervantes has victimized over the years. That includes one part of my soul, which i only got back when i switch to maining him in the later games.

Anyone who has played SOUL EDGE on whatever platform, with me on the PSX, can remember Cervantes De Leon. Oh remember him? the Pirate who you thought you could not take seriously until he ripped your precious chastity several times to consider yourself pregnant with his child? (inb4machowarnsmeFORTHEKIDS!). Oh and spoilers, he's the PENULTIMATE Boss before you fight Soul Edge, who i remember being far less annoying than Cervantes was. Ogre-> True Ogre Syndrome much Namco?

and the worst part is that the 9001x he KO'd me even when i was using Siegfried, the only character who i was decent at in any Soul game, was that it was just ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY. Fighting Cervantes several times for several minutes made me realize how much i suck. Remember fighting him in Ultra Hard mode? Don't even bother unless you have extremely good knowledge on how to exploit Namco's LEL HARD AI.

Listening to this theme right now.. i still remember how i actually raged a lot of times. Now i can just listen to that sweet, smexy, bagpipes or whatever instruments those sounds where.

Jesus Christ. Just remembering Cervantes made me realize how busted he was in the series, especially in SOUL EDGE. His moveset, with how fast they all activate, pretty much outclasses many of the characters, to the point where I started to be a Cervantes main in the later games. That was how traumatized i was as a kid.

Day 2 - The theme of a boss that killed you repeatedly

Definitely Seymour Flux from Final Fantasy X for me. I was still getting into the RPG genre at the time and I was still used to running away from every fight since that would usually be enough to get through Pokemon so I was always under leveled during my first play through of FFX. I also had the mindset of only using characters that excelled with their starting stats so my team only consisted of Tidus, Yuna and Auron while the rest were still untrained.

Needless to say I got destroyed multiple times until I decided to cheese my way through by doing the aeon overdrive rush, which was still difficult since Yuna would sometimes get OHKO'd between summons. I don't remember any boss after this one that was more difficult, the next two were definitely easier and some would be longer or more gimmicky but none were a straight up story blockade like Seymour Flux.

Day 2 - The theme of a boss that killed repeatedly

When it comes to this one I would have to go with Fighting Fate. This is the theme of Barthandelus. I recall it always took me more than one attempt to finally beat his first form.

Day 2 - The theme of a boss that killed you repeatedly

I'll admit the games I played in the past aren't the typical kind with bosses, so I'll go with a more recent one. Sometime back, I mentioned in the Undertale Fan Club thread where I got trouble with Mad Dummy. It took me several tries until I was able to figure out how to move in circles when dealing with the rockets, haha. But yeah, even though the battle theme is very catchy I started to get annoyed by it after a few tries, lol. Thank goodness for Temmie armor shortly after (and the price cut).

Day 2 - The theme of a boss that killed you repeatedly

Airman. Can't beat him. Easily the toughest boss in II, alongside his good buddy, Woodman. /s (plus, this is the stage music lol)

Spoiler: An actual answer

Yeah, Sigma X3 is a pain in the butt. Going in blind, it's a very reflex oriented fight, since those fireballs REALLY hurt. After awhile, you can pick out the pattern for the fireballs, which will make it easier to preemptively dodge a lot of the fourth - sixth ones. He can surprise you with the shield boomerang when he gets low on life. If you're in the middle of the screen, he'll jump up and do the consecutive fireballs downwards. When described, he's pretty predictable - and he is - but it's still a pretty fast paced fight with very little space for error. Cleanly kicked my butt a number of times. This is only the first form too, lol.

A lot of videos on Youtube make it a lot easier than it looks. Trust me, it's not that simple unless you try it yourself. Oh, but the Z-Saber makes the fight a joke though.

Day 3 - Scenery Challenge I

Today we're going to try something a little different - a scenery challenge! Pretty simple concept, really - find a track from a video game that you think could be background music for the image below, post it up, and (if you feel like it) tell us why you picked it. Is it one of your favourites? The first thing that popped into your head? Something you spent hours combing the internet for because it's the perfect answer? Something you just felt like trolling people with?

Today's image is under the spoiler!

Spoiler:

Some feedback on this idea would be great too

Day 3 - Scenery Challenge I

I feel like there could have been way more options, especially since there's a lot of games with OSTs that are pure ambiente music. However, I wanted some Castlevania music for this one. Sadly, most of the eastern OSTs are pretty situational, so that's the best I could come up with. xD

Also, apparently Youtube IP blocking an entire country from watching certain videos is still a thing.

Day 3 - Scenery Challenge I

Wolftenstein: The New Order - Kill Everyone

So Super Secret Agent Xin Zhao. Your mission is to infiltrate the Wermacht Fortress in Stalingrad. Those Nazi crazy scientist super secret cultists have enslaved the Soviet Russians in order to conduct some really evil Nazi super-stormtrooper experiments. Your mission is simple. KILL EVERYONE. SHOOT THEIR D**KS OFF! COMMIT AS MUCH BLOODY ULTRAVIOLENT SUPERMURDER AGAINST THOSE DAMN NAZIS AND THEIR NAZI EXPERIMENTS!

This is what i imagine when looking at that rather ominious looking entryway. You may be thinking just some ambiance? HELL NO! When you put a murderous psychopath like Secret Agent Xin Zhao (ME) in that entryway, this is what's playing on my head. Armed with my Murdershotgun, and my Badass High Frequency Dragon Spear, a head full of RAGE and being happy in the pants, I feel that this rather ominous entryway is about to be painted with the blood of nazis, zombies, nazi zombies, and some unlucky enemies.

(Also, i think scenery should also include something like Action scenes or anything that looks like an event in any video game. Action scenes is one but that should be reserved for another time. And I know my suggestion wins for Meloetta's rather unawakened carnage heart ;) )

Day 3 - Scenery Challenge I

Ehhhh. That WAS the first song that popped into my head, but looking at it, I get the feeling the inside of the castle would be as dilapidated and cavernous as the outside, so it'd need something suitably creepy...and it doesn't get much more atmospheric or creepy than NieR's soundtrack. Ultimecia's Castle theme doesn't fit, Castlevania's castle themes are always faster in tempo due to the high number of enemies wandering the corridors, Hyrule Castle is a beast all its own no matter its incarnation...I could go on. The Shadowlord's Castle in NieR is very well furnished, but it has this creepy vibe to it that I kinda get here.

I had planned on including action scenes, as well as possibly original characters from image sites as another challenge.

And you don't know how much violence my heart craves, dood. I'm the kind of evil sadist who can kill Little Sisters in BioShock without batting an eye. The one who will go for the flamethrower over the shotgun because I like watching people run around on fire. The one who immediately swapped to a corrosive weapon in Borderlands when it became available. The one who always picks the evil choices in Bioware games. I love causing pain. The amount of blood is irrelevant =P

Day 4 - A track that fills you with dread

Today's challenge marks the first of what will probably be a long line of emotional themes. So for today, post up a theme that fills you with dread every time you hear it. One that gets your heart pounding in anticipation of terror just around the corner! Or just something you really didn't enjoy hearing because it always heralded trouble, or whatever else. Because, you know, some of us like to pretend we don't have emotions, or that we can turn them off and on like flicking a switch. Whatever works. Just post the track and give us a little explanation too if you feel like it.

Please note: Responses of "Burn My Dread" in response to this are neither witty nor valid unless you give a textwall to explain them. I'm looking at you, Satoshi.

Day 4 - A track that fills you with dread

August 18, 2000. That was the day that i got the video game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis for the Sony Playstation as a birthday gift (Oh noes, i just said my birthday. gee gee). I remember getting this Resident Evil game as a gift from one of my Dankhole of friends who thought that I liked playing Horror games, as back in the day, i was a pansy. So i tried Resident Evil 3 and i was quite blown away with the fact that I was able to actually play it after i learned from the same dankhole friend of mine on how to play when we were playing Resident Evil 2.

STARS! STAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS.

Standing at around almost 8 feet tall, and possibly weighing at over 300 pounds of hate, murder, slaughter, and a hatred for STARS people such as Jill and Brad, ya'll know who I'm referring to.

Yes. This piece of music. You know that Sh*ts about to go down whenever you heard it. Its Nemesis! He farken scared me as a young kid. I thought I was a murderking because I was tearing people apart, including those Zombies, then Nemesis came along and said "STAAAAAAAAAAAARS" tried to tear my dunghole apart with his big meaty hands. The worst part is that he wasn't just some random boss. He was the star of the game. You were a witness to someone who popped in from out of nowhere. The even more worst part, is that piece of music played, and you never knew when he was about to come out until he shattered a window or blew a wall open with his Rocket Launcher.

Playing RE3 at night and hearing that theme... it send chills down my spine. But it taught me something. It taught me that if I wanted to let Jill Valentine, who is still one of the hottest pieces of fictional video game danka wanka out there, live. I needed to be a murderking. I needed to overcome that dreaded piece. If I wanted to let Jill live so that me and her can... dear god i don't know what I'm talkin about.

tLDR: RE3 and Nemesis were quite remarkably memorable to my childhood. Jill was the greatest and hottest piece of dankawanka ever, which made me play the game so often, and there was Nemesis. And hearing Nemesis' track always filled me with this feeling of dread that i needed to overcome.

Day 4 - A track that fills you with dread

When it comes to a track that fills me with dread, I got to go with the track Legion from Mass Effect 2. Location it plays at happens to be something ancient, check. Lots of Husks and Scions, check. Required to go to the
Spoiler:
at one point in the game, check.

Day 4 - A track that fills you with dread

The music you here when you visit the graveyard in Fable always freaked me out, especially since killing the enemies makes these souls cry out which adds to the creepiness. None of the enemies are that dangerous, in fact sometimes there's a fairy flying around and you always know when they'll jump out but the music always gave me chills.

Day 5 - A track you hate from a game you like

Even our favourite games aren't perfect. Some have infuriating bosses, have awful graphics, horrible gameplay moments or controls; the list goes on. Some have some really bad music. So for today's challenge, share with us a track you absolutely loathed from a game you absoutely adored. Tell us why, too - get sick of hearing it? Think it's badly composed? Out of place? Whatever the reason, let us know. Or just...post it up. Your call.

Next week there will be a challenge within the challenge running for at least two weeks I think; still working on the finer points. Should hopefully be fun though!

Day 5 - A track you hate from a game you like

Have fun

Doom 2's Underhalls theme. Okay sure. I'm mostly positive about Doom's music, especially the first game, but holy Cyberdemons... why does this sound so weirdly calming compared to the other tracks? For some reason, it screams more like "Dancing with The Imps" than anything to me. Want me to be even more cruel? This sounds more like classy porn foreplay music than anything else, and yes I know there's kids in the forum but bear with me here. I was seriously thinking about that the more i hear it. This is even worse if played on its original sound format in MS-DOS. Good luck and have fun.

PS: What was Bobby Prince Jr, Doom's original music composer, smoking when he made this track, and some of the tracks in Doom 2. I guess i wanna have some of that, and I'd share it with the rest of VG too.

PS Have i won yet?

Day 5 - A track you hate from a game you like

When it comes to a track I hate from a game I like, that is a tough decision. Well actually, no it isn't tough to decide. One track I hate happens to be Aria di Mezzo Carattere in Final Fantasy VI. One reason why I don't like it is because I am not really a fan of opera.

Day 6 - Franchise Challenge I: Final Fantasy

Today we've got our first franchise challenge! Final Fantasy is pretty well known for its music, so today share with us a track from any of the numerous games in the series, and tell us why you picked it. Is it your favourite? One you find particularly catchy? One you hate? One you feel people should hear? Or something you just picked for the sake of today's challenge?

This is another one of my experimental ideas; there will be other large, fairly well-known series in the future if people like the idea...or don't react negatively to it, aha~
