The Nintendo DSi Discussion Thread

it seems that nintendo and sony are engaged a prolonged battle to elongate the shelf-life of their now aging systems. The DS, then the PSP, then the DS Lite, then the new PSP, then the DSi... why doesn't nintendo just up the ante and announce a new system? Trend: GBA - success. GBA SP - bigger success. Micro - well, not really.
Will the same happen again? DS - success. DS Lite - bigger success. DSi... you think so?

Why do I think this is a step in the wrong direction? Firstly, I think that whenever you make an improved version of a software or hardware the most unappealing thing to do is remove features from the previous versions. I would perfectly understand if the DS's successor dropped the GBA port, but why call it a DS if it doesn't encompass all the attributes we've grown used to seeing in it?
The SD slot and camera idea are, as I said, part of an augmenting effort to mimic useful features of rival systems.
If they make games that catering only to DSi users featuring the camera I'd feel rejected by nintendo, because that would make my DS obsolete before it's successor even showed up!
Nintendo, you're winning the console wars. Please, show some dignity and stop trying to make us by something that we think is an improvement to what we have but, in reality, is not worth it. Nintendo = amazingness. As of now. Keep the standard.

Ok, I'm done.
I completely agree with this. And I absolutely hate the loss of my precious GBA slot. I'll stick with my Lite, thanks.

Ditto. Srsly, it is far too soon for such a very, very minor upgrade. As Lighting said, if it were a whole new system that dropped the GBA slot, it'll be one thing. But instead, it's the same thing, with features on my cell phone & less gameplay.

They are obviously on this "casual gamer's" BS, and until they decide to stop effing around,I can only wish the worst for them.

So will Nintendo go red with DSi flopping, or will the "casual gamers" keep it in black?

I expected DSi to have some sorta showing at TGS, but Nintendo wasn't there.

Ok, I personnaly think the DS"I" Is STUPID! Like y'all.... WIKIPEDIA Said it would probably be a failure. ok, first, Nintendo decides they can't stand a new generation without a new handheld, so they make a DS. then sony gets intrested, stands up, and shows its invention to the audience. PSP. Go buy a PS3 If ur looking for something a TINCY better. Yet, the PSP was quite a success. as the audience drifts away from the now-boring show, Sony and Mr.N give lighter versions of their consoles. BIG hit for some unknown reason. since the smart part of humanity is about to leave (pc,me,readers), the two Competitors in the generation Talk about new releases. yet the same. If you compared the final version of the PSP-3000 to DSi DSi would lose, right?A big Major Downside in Ninty's history. ok, Wii:rocks Gamecube:preety good. N64:nice! SNES: good NES: personnaly better than SNES Game&Watch: how much do they want u to pay again? Nintendo Color TV game: good for its time.as for GB: GB:so ****ing un creative, take the Lynx made BEFORE it! GBC: preety good, better than the lynx in a way.GBA: wow, yet competitor free, this was awesome! DS:WOO! DSL:ditto! but better! DSI*sigh*:LOSER! *ee*

cool huh
Those aren't even real pictures of the DSi. I mean... Super Mario Galaxy is being played.

I just realized what I posted. I said "the Internet browser won't work". It will because you download the browser onto the DSi, which means it already has plenty of storage. In other words, no need for a GBA storage expansion pack. >_>

I highly doubt those are real.. It seems as it could easily snap and ect.

What's the need for doubting them? They've been confirmed to be fake several months ago and besides, Nintendo has revealed what the DSi looks like.

A new DS? May not get it since my current DSLite is still awesome and in mint condition.

Black DS ftw.

Nice, a brand new DS!! I can barley believe what some of the new features are gonna be. A camera, the Internet, no more Gameboy.....

But still not worth those small features for such a hefty price.

Pocket Gamer has been told by one developer that its studio is having problems with one of its forthcoming games being compatible with the DSi hardware. Rumour has it that games have hit hurdles in the certification process on the grounds of technical issues.

If true, this is an issue that raises a couple of questions. Firstly - is Nintendo really going to penalise developers who have a game ready for release in a way that could damage them financially by suddenly hitting them with new criteria for making their games DSi compatible?

Secondly, if a game currently in development is having to be re-coded to fit DSi, should we expect there to be problems with the hundreds of games that have already been released on DS? Even if it's a problem that will affect only a handful of games, it's still going to be a set-back for a new console designed to co-exist with the current DS hardware.

We contacted Nintendo to get official word on whether there are known compatibility issues.

They told us: "All DS titles are compatible with DSi, with the exception of those that require use of the GBA slot."

Perhaps the DSi isn't quite as compatible as we thought? :( This is worrisome--now it's looking like even games that DON'T use the GBA slot may not work with the new DS. Not sure quite how great a source the article has (I don't pay much mind to many news sites usually 8/) but if this is true, there's yet another reason on my "don't buy" list.

Someone from GBATemp seems to have gotten a hold of a DSi and tested it and it seems flash carts do not work. I hope I'm allowed to post this seeing how I am not advertising but using it as a reference.
