Emerald hack: The Pit v2 - Roguelite Style Hack

Well it doesn't learn anything in gen 9, Steelix is completely unobtainable in ScarVio, so the learnset has to have been taken from a different game. The only reason then it shouldn't have access to Iron Head is because it doesn't have access in BDSP. If we want to say PLA is Gen 9... it gets Iron Head in that game. So now I'm just confused

Legends Arceus is not Gen 9, it's Gen 8. Iron Head is also obtainable on Steelix in BDSP.

You getting screwed by Gen 9, not BDSP or Gen 8.

The only way to get Iron Head on Steelix is to play with one of the other limited dex options in the hack, either Gen 3 or Gen 5.

Okay well that's exactly why it doesn't have it like I said.

Friend, I don't really understand why you're talking with a bit of an aggressive approach. I attempted to give constructive criticism seeing my experience with the hack and what it's marketed out to be. If you wanted people to understand this is a "battle frontier" style hack you could just include that in the name in some way perhaps to avoid confusion. Like "The Pit of Battles" or something would be very clear on the intention, at least that's my opinion on that.

On another point, yes I tried this as an alternative to Emerald Rogue given Emerald Rogue has ceased further development. I saw this and was excited for there to be a hack that still was being developed. The approach Emerald Rogue has I think is a very good one. It makes constant use of all the elements of a pokemon game but in the rogue"lite" or "like" style. That is not to say that a hack such as The Pit taking a battle frontier style is not good, it is also quite good. However, perhaps out of all the things I mentioned, I mainly would like the emphasize that just beating 1 trainer or a few more and collecting items floor after floor for 21 floors felt mind numbing after a while given there was just so little to do in each map bar like run around and fight the trainer(s). A battle frontier simulator style hack which is also attempting to create maps for each battle just seems a bit misplaced to me. Had you just wanted it to be battle simular style, why bother making maps then? Like don't get me wrong, they look amazingly nice but they just feel like unused, like more could be done with them. I offered the possibility of encountering new pokemon within them as an option. It could also be like taking secret routes within them to encourage exploration and finding rare items hidden, sort of like a scavenger hunt. It'd be nice to have something that the player felt invited into to explore the maps more rather than just run around, find trainer, battle, collect items and repeat. And I understand you wanted it to be a "battle frontier sim" style hack, but there's a reason the battle frontier had no maps and just battles. It put all the attention into battles, perhaps the maps take away a bit from that, rather than give to it. Having maps gave me the sense the hack was promoting me exploring. Hence I was confused into feeling a little bit jarred by the experience of the maps. Again, the work done with them has been amazing, they look very nice. I just feel they are misplaced in a hack like this.

I didn't mean to "show off" or something that I was good at the game or whatever, with 21 floors I just expected a little more challenge after I literally put it into a challenging mode. I literally beat 21 floors in I think it was like an hour or possibly less. I was just blazing through teams cause I was overleveled sometimes even. That may take tweaking the settings again, which I'll be doing, but yeah.

I hope you can see this as me just trying to be helpful, friend. I'm encouraging you to continue development of this hack as you've clearly, along with the other people involved, invested a lot of time and effort into it. And I'd just like to say that it is a very good hack. I was just offering my point-of-view and criticism to see it become even better, not degrade your work. You and your friends are clearly very talented individuals in terms of coding, game design and the like and I congratulate you for that. You are very good at what you do. As always however, there's room for improvement even in the very best things and I was offering just that, a little friendly advice to promote improvement of this great project.

Thanks for your time reading this,

Dude... If you didn't liked it just say so without being so overly verbose. This is not YouTube for crying out loud, you ain't getting paid for your words, or whatever it is you attempted to convey here.

Besides, if you don't like people's attitude maybe try a different approach when talking?

It's okay to not like a ROM Hack, completely valid, just learn how to speak and formulate a well written and sensible review, heck you can even use AI nowadays, I'm sure it's hella convenient for content creators nowadays.

This isn't just a review you posted on YouTube where you just said your feelings about the hack honestly after giving it a fair shake, you specifically came into our release thread to tell us directly to our face essentially, "you know the entire point of your hack? I don't like it and want you to change it". It wasn't just constructive criticism, you told us to change the entire identity of our hack after barely even playing it. Your criticism is not wanted or asked for. If you don't understand why someone would take an aggressive approach to responding to such a message, you don't understand how annoying it is to be sent messages like this. If the entire point of the romhack isn't for you, just don't play it. Don't go up to the creator and tell them you don't like it. That is so far from necessary. They're not things we have any intention of changing because it's what the hack IS at a core level. So all you're doing is essentially sending a message directly to someone who creates hacks for free as a hobby that you don't like what they do. Of course I'm not going to respond nicely.

If you don't like the hack, that's your right. But the idea that you need to come here and tell me that you don't like it specifically because you didn't understand it nor actually play it for any reasonable length of time is wholly unnecessary. It's the Pit of 100 Trials in Pokemon, it's not a complicated idea.

The maps shouldn't make you think it's promoting exploring because they're mostly just small rectangles with a warp on the center. It is very obvious that exploration is not an intended mechanic of the hack.

Why bother making maps? It's just for aesthetics, the original version of the hack for the longest time just used the single starting room map like the original Pit of 100 Trials. You can literally enable a setting to turn off the random maps if you don't like what they imply to you or if you think the maps take away from the "just battles" gameplay. Because again, your complaint is invalid. You can play with the just the original Paper Mario inspired singular map.

You act like we should need to change our hack name to emphasize so that people like you who demand route exploration in everything won't be confused, OUR HACK IS LITERALLY THE PIT OF 100 TRIALS IN POKEMON. Like do you not understand that? The entire purpose of our hack is to be exactly what it is. Saying we should turn it into something else is not something we're going to listen to. We weren't cryptic in explaining what the hack is, it's the Pit of 100 Trials from Paper Mario, in Pokemon. If that is not interesting to you, you should not play it. And you definitely shouldn't bother to come here and tell me that you don't get it. If you didn't know what The Pit of 100 Trials was before playing our hack, that's understandable but we didn't pretend to be anything we weren't. The information was up front and available before you started playing the hack. To download it and play it anyway despite knowing what it was or without looking into what it was, is on you.

Despair is already insanely hard you will probably never beat it. The early floors are easy yes, that's intended. It gives you a chance to get your team solid before things ramp up. The largest challenge in Despair is keeping up with Exp, you will be underleveled before you know it. Just because you were overleveled briefly at the start of your run doesn't mean anything. The first 21 floors aren't even the first 21% of the run, you get more trainers on average the longer you're in the pit. The first 21 floors are more like the first 10% of the run. You can't play 10% of a run and call it easy. You will not beat Despair without cheating, it's that hard I feel pretty confident in saying that without knowing anything about your skill level.

Again, no I don't see it as you being helpful. I don't need to be "encouraged to continue development" in the way you want the hack to go. We created The Pit of 100 Trials in Pokemon Emerald. If you don't like the concept of The Pit of 100 Trials in Pokemon Emerald, that's completely fine, it's your right, but there is absolutely no reason to come here and tell it to my face and expect me not to have something to say about it. Doing what you suggest would not "see it become even better", it would "see it become something entirely different". It's not and never has been the point of the hack.

The point of the hack is to be The Pit of 100 Trials in Pokemon Emerald.

There are plenty of criticisms of the hack that are valid. Even of things related to balance. But the things you brought up are not those things. They are just signs this hack isn't meant for you not things to be fixed.
Archie, game's fine, if it weren't nobody would give 2 f's about it. It's as easy and simple as that.

The only thing I'd "change" is the music library to include PMD Tracks but ehh... it's not a make or break thing, we've gone so far without 'em and we're doing just fine.

Your response is completely understandable, and it's kind of a shame this convo is now part of the thread, but oh well... Such is life I guess.

We'd maybe include PMD tracks if the ROM wasn't already at 97% full for the Gen 9 patch. We're kind of at our max right now unfortunately and we want to leave that space open for new content. There's definitely a lot of vanilla Emerald stuff that can be removed to clear up stuff in the future but that's it's own whole thing to deal with. So maybe one day, but for now we're fighting space concerns.

Ok some what do I do with the google drive
On the google drive link, towards the top middle of the page it says "Shared with me > The Pit of 100 Trials" with a down arrow. Press the down arrow, select 'download'. Once downloaded extract the patches and apply one patch to a base emerald rom for the generations you'd like available (3, 5 or 9 gens worth of mons). Alternatively you can click on each of the .bps files and download them individually.

Sorry but it doesn't show up for me
Sorry I was referencing the desktop UI. In your posted picture the files ending in .bps are the patches you want. In the upper right, there is something called a meatball or sometimes hamburger menu (the the dots, sometimes bars). Click it, should have the download option. Again, alternatively if you click on the .bps files (should be 3) and download those individually. Since you're on mobile there is android based patches, but that looks like ios? Either way, there are web based patchers that you can upload the base rom then the patch like the https://www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js/

Hello, i just downloaded this rom and ive been trying it but the only gimmick i had access to is mega evolution, i just watched the alpharad vid on it and thats what got me into the game. He spoke about dynamax, tera, z moves, and mega. my bag still has a slot for z moves but i cant buy any in the shop.

It is a setting that has to be turned on before you start your run in Custom Settings. They aren't on by default because they are broken and make the game too easy, as you probably saw in the Alpharad video.

out of curiosity, does the pixel artist(mudskip, right?) have a page? their work is really good, i'd like to follow or support them somehow.

also, this hack is very, very fun. the whole team did a great job, and i'm saying this as someone who really doesn't play gen 3 hacks anymore. this is incredible work.
