Mesprit has 105 base stats across the board except with HP & speed being at 85. It is a jack of all trades pokemon, but a pokemon that is actually decent even if I think its the worst of the lake trio.

Design wise I prefer Mesprit over Azelf.

As a kid I thought Mesprit reminded me of the Echidna tribe from Sonic Adventure.

Azelf is undoubtedly the best of the trio. 125/125 attack stats + 115 base speed. It doesn't matter if you gave it 10/10 defenses or 5 HP, those are the perfect mixed attacker stats for sweeping and washing your enemies with the water of Lake Valor.

Azelf can learn Flamethrower by TM.

In Legends one of it's research tasks is to see it use Self-Destruct 40 times.
I guess someone at GF doesn't like it =P

Azelf can learn many moves. Even U-turn, nasty plot, and explosion. When I first encountered Azelf it took me a while until I caught it. It was the first legendary I ever caught without the master ball, and the first legendary I caught with a poke ball.

It's Legends PokeDex entry is darker than in other games.

The dreaded Being of Willpower. Legends tell of this Pokémon manipulating the will of its adversaries and turning them into puppets of its own.

In the Diamond & Pearl Adventures manga chapter 12 (which I loved reading in middle school), Azelf begins to glow during a climactic fight against Galactic Admin Saturn. It resonated with Hareta's willpower in refusing to lose against Team Galactic, and I always thought that fight was cool.
