That is all Tranquill has in terms of defense. I'll admit that is annoying when you're grinding for levels in the wild though.

Way better for sure. I think it is disappointing because for a mid evo Tranquill's design isn't bad, just a little basic. Tranquill feels like it was added in to fill in the spot for route-1-bird-mon and that's it. Hence why other bird mons in gen 5 aren't as underwhelming. I think even Swanna is a better choice.

I want to like Unfezant since it was in my party for black 1. However, it comes off as underwhelming. Unfezant does not have access to brave bird or drill peck. Why not? You're tell me its best flying STAB is fly? A 2 turn attack? Unfezant feels unfinished.

I'm actually torn on that. Female Unfezant is missing something and I think it should have had different colors all around. I am not sure why Unfezant is where the line decides to make gender differences. Male Unfezant having the mask is... okay. The color could work but I think the mask itself should have been something like a ballroom mask, a phantom mask for instance. Even then I do not know if such a mask was a necessity for Unfezant. Does that pokemon strike you as a fancy pokemon? I do not know. It looks a little off.

I know there are some others that have noticeable appearance differences too due to gender like hippowdon, pyroar, wobbufett, milotic, pikachu, jellicent, vileplume, meowstic, indeedee, basculegion, oinkologne ff the top of my head.

Unfezant is outclassed by Swanna of all pokemon. Swanna can be used in rain dance teams with hydration and hurricane. Unfezant has nothing. It's only good flying STAB is a 2 turn move, and its best normal STAB is return. It can run away with U-turn and abuse detect + roost, but other pokemon use those strats better.

I'm not going to argue that this is a powerful pokemon. I think it could have been interesting if they made the different genders functionally different, and not just physical changes. Unfezant's 115 physical attack, it's one strong stat, could become it's special attack stat if female, since this pokemon does have a few good special moves like air slash and hurricane.

Unfezant has very similar stats to Dodrio, and Dodrio is not only faster but has a better move pool. Also I really like your idea that the female variant should have a high sp. atk. instead. It would validate all the special flying moves that this line can learn. All the could-have-beens are just more negatives on what should have been.

Don't forget better abilities. The same gen introduced Braviary which has slightly better attack and bulk, but has keen eye, sheer force + brave bird, and defiant. Especially defiant.
Edit: I completely mixed up sheer force with reckless. I feel dumb now.

Sheer Force doesn't make Brave Bird any stronger. Brave Bird has no secondary effect other than recoil.
