The Problem With Censors

Um...yeah. -.- Not really a full-blown complaint, and this is a very minor issue; I just wanted to comment on a strange occurrence several minutes ago that was partially annoying and partially amusing.

Earlier, I was editing this post and inserting two YouTube videos. Upon completion of said post, the second video inexpicably did not display properly, despite me double-checking that I had entered the video ID correctly. The glaring problem was apparent rather quickly...

Sigh...here is the YouTube link I had originally tried to post:

Please replace the asterisks with the letters s, l, u, and t in that order (second letter is lowercase L. NO offensive words intended; this is awkward), and you will be greeted by the video I was originally trying to post.

You'll likely see that the censored "word" and the video in question couldn't be more opposite from each other. XD

I managed to find an alternative, but I was rather inconvenienced for a few minutes... I don't know whether to yell at the English language, the PokeCommunity filter* and its accidental censorship, the people who coined the darn term, or a mixture of those. @_@

Anyway, I guess I had a decent laugh, but stuff like this does pose a problem when one is trying to link to a piece of innocent media that just so happens to have an unfortunate letter string present in its URL. Just Saiyan. >.<

To those who read this, thank you for your time. :D

*Also, note to the PokeCommunity filter thingy: you're doing it wrong. In an attempt to block vulgarity, you not only prohibited a piece of instrumental wonderment from being heard, you failed to block the true things threatening the kids of today who browse PokeCommunity. I mean, come on - epic Narnia music can't be linked to, yet we must constantly be subject to the tormenting screeches of Justin Bidoof and Rebecca Stunfisk that infiltrate ppl'z posts here?

Well, I'm pretty sure that can't be changed (since word replacements applied to -everywhere- so I'd assume the same is for censors >__>;) Though at least there's sites like tinyurl which make an alternative way to link :(

So that's what that site can be used for - averting accidental URL censorship. Thanks for the tip, Forever.

Previously, I really didn't see the point of that site (TinyURL) because most URLs that I copy and paste are either formatted into usable links in the message I'm composing, or they're just of a manageable length that I can work with. Though I bet it would suck if TinyURL accidentally assigned yet another truncated URL with a censored letter string. XD Then again, the URL in question can be manually customized rather than being randomly generated...

bit.ly is another alternative URL shortening site. TinyURLs can sometimes be assumed for "spam" urls (I've been there). So, you should try that.

I also could suggest the "ShortURL" add-on for Firefox, which pretty much does the same with a right-click from your mouse.

May I also suggest that the Admins switch the word censors to "Match Whole Word Only" mode?

Ok, I can understand censoring some words without the option "Match Whole Word Only" ticked, like the notorious 4-letter words that Carlin made famous. But words like the one described in this thread's opening post aren't typically smushed into compound words, and to be honest, I believe their meanings are not offensive enough to apply such censors in a way that they can cause these sorts of mishaps.

It is my opinion that PC contains enough moderation to handle the misuse of such words that becomes possible because the censors have been made less zealous.

I'm sorry if our censors clipped your ..um clip.. it happens. We'll not change the current censor settings as they do tend to work when users are bypassing them sigh

most censored words are using "whole word" settings however a few use "contains" mode so the they catch the censored word(s) properly in modern usage.
