I've been trying to talk myself into buying Emerald for my GBA. However... the only place I can seem to find it is GameStop. And it's so darn expensive. They want like 30 bucks for it and only want five dollars less for Sapphire (which I also considered). (think that's bad? they want 40 for FireRed/LeafGreen... I spent ten for mine and it's in perfect condition) So, basically, I'm on this sort of "run-around" with rather or not I want to buy it. One day, I decide to. The next day, I'm half way to GameStop and decide not to. So, why I'm here is... I'm going to ask for the pros and cons about the game in general. I want unbiased opinions here. ;] If I could look at what's good about the game and what isn't... it might be easier for me to decide if I want to buy it or if my money would be better spent elsewhere.

(this is in the right place, right? i believe so)

Yep! This is the right place. You should get Emerald. I got it the other day and I do not regret it. You can catch Groudon, Rayquaza and Kyogre. While in Ruby and Saphhire, you can only catch one of the three. Another pro of Emerald is the Battle Tower, which you unlock after you beat the game. You will not regret buying it!

You can really catch all three of them? That does sound pretty convincing. I'm not too worried about the battle tower. Though, it would give me something to do after I beat the game. :]

    Pros :
The Three Weather Legendaries are available to you in the game.
    Battle Frontier
    Battle Tower
Johto League Pokemon are available after you defeat the Elite Four
Beldum is available from Steven after Elite Four

    Cons :
    Same storyline

I suggest you do get Pokemon Emerald. In my opinion, the pros outway the cons by so many 'points'.

    Emerald Pros:
    Catchable Rayquaza
    Catchable Groudon
    Catchable Kyogre
Catchable plenty of Johto Pokemon, unobtainable by any other GBA Game
    Battle Frontier
Choosing which Lati@s you chase around the Region
New 8th Gym leader(kinda weird looking, but still water types)
New Champion (Wallace from the 8th Gym steped up a lot in life)
Old champion (Still able to battle, but Steven is a lot stronger)
Compatablity with Fire Red, Leaf Green, and Gale of Darkness
    National Dex faster
One of the Johto Starters after Hoenn Dex completed
    If you can get them.....
Old Sea Chart - Allows you to catch a Mew
Mystic Ticket - Allows you to catch a Lugia, and Ho-oh
Aurora Ticket - Allows you to catch a Deoxys(Speed forme)
Eon Ticket - Allows you to catch the other Lati@s

    Emerald Cons:
Basiclly same story of Ruby and Sapphire
Both criminal teams are against you
Gyms steped up a notch(but not by a bunch)

Soo overall, I'd go with Emerald, its just better.

The same storyline is a good point. After all, I've played Ruby and Sapphire so basically know the storyline. However, it does seem there are a lot more pros so far. It's cool that you can catch Johto Pokemon. :] And the starters, too!

I think I'm leaning toward getting it so far.

    Ah, that's okay!

Even one is pretty cool. :] Is the one the same each time you play? Or is it dependant upon which starter you pick?

And, I have Gale of Darkness AND Colosseum. ;] So, I could still get them. LoL

But you need to finish the Hoenn Dex which you need Ruby or Sapphire (or both?) for.

Here is my post in a similar thread:

    me said:
Sell your Sapphire and buy Emerald. I am not joking. There is no comparison between Emerald and Ruby/Sapphire. Emerald has everything RS has, and A LOT more. Here are a few of the changes that I can remember off the top of my head:

    - All Pokemon sprites are now animated
    - Some Abilities can now be used outside of battle. (i.e. Arena Trap increases encounter rate, Sychronize increases the chance a wild Pokemon will have the same nature, Flame Body decreases (almost in half) the amount of steps needed to hatch an egg, etc.)
    - The Pick Up Ability now changes items you get depending on the level of the Pokemon (i.e. Lv91 Pokemon has a 5% chance of getting TM26 Earthquake)
    - PokeNav now has Match Call, where trainers (including Gym Leaders) will call you for a rematch, their Pokemon improving each time
    - You will find opportunities to do double battles againsts two other trainers at the same time.
    - You can also do 2v2 battles with computer partner against two other trainers.
    - You can catch Ditto in the Desert Underpass.
    - If a female or Ditto is holding an Everstone and you breed it, there is a 50% chance its nature will be passed on to the baby Pokemon.
    - The path from Verdanturf through Mauville and to Route 118 has been straightened, which makes it a great path for breeding purposes.
    - If you breed two Pikachu/Raichu and one is holding the Light Ball, the baby Pichu will know Volt Tackle.
    - You are able to get both the Claw Fossil and Root Fossil instead of having to choose one.
    - The Safari Zone has a new section that is full of Johto Pokemon.
    - Once you fill the Hoenn PokeDex (not counting Jirachi and Deoxys), if you visit Prof. Birch he will allow you to pick one of the Johto starters.
    - Move Tutors are scattered throughout the region.
    - The Contest houses in Slateport, Vendarturf, and Fallarbor have been replaced with Battle Tents. These tents provide different skill games.
    - All contests are now located in Lilycove.
    - You can now choose either Latias or Latios.
    - Rayquaza can be caught prior to the "elite" 4, although that is incredibly cheap.
    - Both Kyogre and Groudon can be caught. Both are Lv70 (same as Rayquaza).
    - You can catch Mew, Deoxys, Ho-oh, and Lugia, if the get the proper ticket from a Nintendo Event.
    - Berries #21-26 now not only lower EVs by 10, but they also increase Happiness.
    - The biggest addition is the Battle Frontier. It provides you seven different challenges that offers improved AI strategy (somewhat), including the ability to double battle either with or against a friend.
    - More Johto Pokemon can be found in the Battle Frontier (i.e. Smeargle and Soodowoodo).
    - Move Tutor moves can be purchased in the Battle Frontier.
    - Vitamins can be purchased in the Battle Frontier for 1 Battle Point.

I am sure I am forgetting some things, but the above items alone make Emerald the best Pokemon game available.

    Only slightly different to Ruby/Sapphire.
You'll need Ruby/Sapphire/XD to complete the Hoenn dex.
and some other stuff I forgot. XD

You can't try and get Emerald shipped from another country? There might be better prices abroad, look on the internet. Of course, that depends on where you are now.

If you hadn't played R/S it would be worth it. I've got Ruby, and I'm not buying Emerald though, because it's almost like playing the game over again. But that's just me :) For someone who has the patience to play it again only to access these MANY and NICE new features, it can probably be worth it. If I had a better economic situation, I might have bought it already. It's just a question of priorities~

So, I'll need Ruby or Sapphire or both to complete the dex? I suppose I could get Sapphire, too. I haven't seen Ruby around at GameStop or any pawn shops for a while, though. And... I mean a while. But, I wouldn't mind getting Sapphire.

Anyway, I would have them shipped. Except, I have a debit card and everytime I intend to shop online... I spend the money. (lol) I might consider it, though. If I don't spend the money next time. My GameStop has them new and used. I think they only reason they have so many copies of them is because the Pokemon games are big sellers here. I even see men well into their fifties walking around playing Pokemon.

    Thanks everyone!

There are new outfits? That sounds interesting. :]

Read my previous email to see why it is definitely worth it to sell your Ruby and purchase Emerald.

I was lucky and found Fire Red, Leaf Green, Sapphire and Emerald brand. Found Fire Red and Emerald at a Wal-Mart, Leaf Green and Sapphire at Target. Paid regular price for them though, but last I saw, TRU had dropped Sapphire to 19.99.
Try Toys r Us if there are any around you.

Yea. Glad you chose to go with Emerald! I'm playing it right now. :-) Hope you can get it at a decent price, someone on Ebay was gonna give me one for $100!!! But I declined because 1. I already got emerald and 2. that guys a ripoff I mean 100? Come on!

    I had it backwards! *head2desk*

Emerald is $40 and FR/LG are $30. I don't know why I was thinking it was the other way around. I'm still going to get Emerald... but, I think I'll be getting Ruby or Sapphire first. I have enough to get either or and I'll have enough next week to get the other. But, this week... I'd rather not get Emerald because I need extra money for dog food. I'll let you guys know when I get Emerald. I'm really excited and I can't wait.

I'm not sure if there is a Toys R Us nearby. I'll check before I buy at GameStop. I didn't even know TRU still carried GBA games.
