You're not the only one. lol

Anyway, story time.

So, I had a weird conversation with my parents recently, and I'm not really sure what to make of it. I'm going to be moving out soon-ish, and have been looking around at apartments to see what's what. I'm most likely going to have a roommate, so my mom told me not to tell anyone I wasn't straight, and I told her "It's not something I'm ashamed of, so I'm not going to hide it."

The next day, I found a trans guy looking for a roommate, so I figured I'd look into it. On the way there, both of my parents told me not to tell him. That straight people don't go around telling everyone in sight that they're straight, and that if people find out they'll hurt me.

They seem to be forgetting that we live in the second most LGBT friendly city in the world, and that it's automatically assumed that you're straight if you don't say otherwise. I told them that, but they seemed to just completely ignore everything I said. They're thinking about it completely backwards. Not sure how to approach this other than to just ignore them. =/
I feel like if the potential roommate was comfortable with revealing he's trans, he wouldn't mind you telling him you're not straight. Now I'm not sure of his sexuality, and whether that would cause any problems, but I think he'd be open to that conversation and you could figure out whether being roommates would work or not (I don't see why it wouldn't, but sometimes hey it doesn't for the reason of conflicting or rather mutual sexuality). That being said, I don't think you necessarily need to reveal that information about yourself, unless you really want to or if you think it would affect the whole roommate situation. Idk, just my thoughts on the situation.

And with the whole Joan Rivers thing, I don't think I've ever heard her name in relation to LGBT ever.

Yeah, I'd just ignore them. They clearly care about you but it doesn't make them correct in any way lol. They're acting on old information. Besides, never heard of a homophobic trans person lol

And yeah Flushed, Joan never really did anything for the gays as far as I'm aware, she's just one of those comedians like Kathy Griffin that all the gays love that they've claimed as their own lol

Figures that I'd say one thing about otherkin and the one otherkin person that dared visit a website other than Tumblr would find it. Must be the keen bat senses emanating from the soul.

They might be a bat. Literally. Like a space alien bat.

You shouldn't judge them.

Yeah, Joan Rivers is in the same boat as the Golden Girls and classic Hollywood actresses (along with black and white films) as far as "gay followings".

But, I honestly have only heard those sorts of references from tv shows with gay characters. Most gay people I know don't really care one bit about actress/comedian x, y, or z, nor are they ardent celeb gossipers.

I actually don't "get" most of the references that "all gay men know" according to gay characters. I guess that's why they're called "characters"?

That's because characters are, well, characters, you are correct. I don't deny that actress/comedian/some other person x, y, or z probably has a large LGBT following, but we don't really swarm over them like TV seems to think we do. But hey, TV is noticing we exist at all, and we're starting to get main characters, good main characters, that happen to be LGBT, which is quite an improvement just over how the LGBT crowd was treated 50 years ago. We've come far.

Which programs do you feel are representing us well? :) In soap operas and comedies non-heterosexuals tend to be quite stereotypical and their sexuality if often forced / made obvious.

My favourite representation of a gay character is In the Flesh, where a supernatural zombie-outbreak has taken place and the main character just happens to have some boy-crushes.

In season 1 it's not fully addressed, just hinted at. In the second series it does become more story-related, but not due to his sexuality (just the relationship in general).

This is probably a somewhat odd example, but there was a lesbian woman on American Horror Story: Asylum I quite liked. She wasn't weak, nor was she stereotypical in my opinion. She was treated with the same dignity as every other character. For a lesbian character in a show set during the 1960s, she was quite sympathetic.

Granted, the show took place in an insane asylum, but we saw in the first episodes that she wasn't crazy at all, and she was simply locked in there for being a lesbian officially. There was actually a pretty different reason truthfully, but it's still pretty interesting..

In The Flesh sounds like it treated its main character well, though.

Yeah, I didn't tell them he was trans. My mom seems to think being Transgendered is way worse than being Gay for some reason. Probably because she knows a Gay person and no Trans people.

I think that was one of the few shows that didn't feel like they needed to throw in a token gay character and they also related it to the story-line quite well. Her inclusion was also a play off the ambitious aspiring career woman in the 60's, in what was still quite a man's world. Ultimately, she succeeded.

Characters from most sitcoms are usually not in the main cast, and is also used as a funny, fierce, and fabulous subplot! *cringes*

Don't get me started on "Gay TV series", it's basically porn. With the exception of OITNB, which tends to have a better balance of sex, and it's important to the plot of any prison experience.

Another good example, is, again, female. Tara and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I liked how they never had to "gay" relationship issues, there were issues of deception and the like. Notice how Willow's character doesn't change at all either after coming out?

I think the issue I pointed out before mainly applies to male characters, perhaps b/c TV writers/producers/ect are in large cities (NYC, LA), the hotspots for fashion, singing, socialites, dancing, reality tv, acting, ect.

Being trans is "worse" in sense that it's viewed as less acceptable by more people.
(Even though most trans are heterosexual.)

I won't pass judgment until they specify Spike or Angel. (I mean I'm all for Willow and Tara, but the main character matters too, I think.)

From the Buffy or Angel series? Which seasons?

I love spike through season 5 of Buffy, but then he just gets less funny and more stalkery and boring.
I started to have a disconnect with Angel after Cordelia was out of the picture heading into the last season...still not sure how I felt about his heading off Wolfram & Hart. I know the point was to change his character, but he was more appealing from Buffy S1 - Angel S4. (Just blame Charisma Carpenter for the plot issues in S4 and S5.) Whereas Spike redeems himself a bit in the last season of Angel. (Back to his good/bad old self.)

Overall, both characters are amazing, despite a weaker season or two.

I know people tend to prefer Spike over Angel.

But, as a matter of preference, I would go for Angel. I think the first 3 seasons of Angel win him over for me.... Maybe it's the fact that I think he's 50x more attractive. Dunno.

Dyed blond hair, shortish, and skinny with abs doesn't trump; natural hair color, tall, and large frame. (I've never been a fan of super-cut abs.)

On LGBT characters, I'm pretty sure that Stiles from Teen Wolf is bisexual, although its not confirmed yet but most likely. :D

Where does this even come from? He's given no inclination at all toward liking guys.

/that moment when Phantom admits she watches Teen Wolf.

I know it's not cannon (yet), but I know a popular lesbian ship is Korrasami from Legend of Korra. Sure they're cartoons, but I mean seriously, if it's not made cannon, I'll... probably whine about it until I forget about it. :/ honestly not sure if that even counts, but it's all I got. I don't watch a lot of TV.

MEGAEVOLVEBUMP

Hello again everyone!~

Moving away from possibly-LGBT characters can we move on to a brand new LGBT actress? Moving on to our screens in this season's American Horror Story.

Erika Ervin transitioned from male to female, before taking to modelling and acting work. She's known as 'Amazon Eve' on AHS and you can probably see why - she's 6'8" of fabulous~.

Here is a video of Erika talking about her role in AHS and how it relates to her struggles in real life.

It is currently unclear as to who her character is in AHS - but it seems implied that Erika is not transgendered in the show and is just an incredibly tall woman. Unless anyone has seen otherwise? o:

I have never seen an episode of AHS in my life, seems interesting though. Erika is quite fabulous, and while I have no info on how she's depicted in the show, from my research this season is called Freak Show, and focuses on discrimination so I wouldn't be surprised if she was depicted as transgender in the show, for obvious reasons (not my own beliefs, but you get the point). I'm not saying it doesn't make sense not to depict her in that light, but honestly, a tall woman isn't the "freakiest" thing out there, though with the whole circus theme going on I guess that's something you can argue.

So, my mom just asked me what I feel when I see pretty girls... and I said jealousy. I don't think she quite understood what I meant, but I had a chance to explain what exactly I like, and not just leave her to come up with her own definition for 'gay', which was kind of nice.

It's funny, sometimes I think she hates me for being gay, sometimes I think she's actually coming around on it. I can't tell. A couple days ago she tried telling me a story about a "guy who was molested a lot as a kid, and so he became gay" but I walked out before I heard anything more than that (I assume she was going to say that he became a Christian and stopped being gay, and was happier because of it or something.)... and tomorrow she's taking me to an LGBT group here so I can be amongst my peoples. lol

Well hey, it certainly sounds like she's making an effort, which is good. In the early stages it seems like they'll try to talk you out of it with stories like that, I think it's good you just walked away. I think she'll take the hint and hopefully become more mindful of what she says.

My parents are kind of the same way. I recently came out as trans, and they're supportive, but they still are trying to find ways to "talk some sense into me", even if they're not trying to on purpose.
