If you deeply believe that something terrible is happening in the world then I think what is more concerning is saying nothing, especially if you are in a position of prominence that would help focus attention on an important issue. When people like Nina Simone, Charlton Heston, Sidney Poitier and Marlon Brando stood together in 1963 and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King that is what would call courage.
Today I find myself having respect for Pamela Anderson when I realized she held passionate opinions and wasn't just some curvy blonde. I had heard some good stories about her as a spokesperson for animal rights, but what I was really interested in is how she travelled to see a controversial figure Julian Assange and offered him food and comfort while in asylum and defended him as a whistleblower against government corruption in the midst of all sorts of character assassination attempts being hurled at him. I have a deeper admiration for someone like her than I would for some reality television star who never spoke about any significant event and whose only aspiration was to fill their closet with as many shoes as possible.
