I've slept on the floor before (carpeting). An air mattress definitely beats that.

It was $50 so it's fairly high, but it does protect a lot considering a high end smartphone is $500+

I've tried its competition on some coworkers' phones (specifically the Lifeproof case), but most people prefer the Otterbox Defender because it's easier to put on and take off than the Lifeproof case, at least of the coworkers of mine that have used both (and my reason for preferring the Defender as well, having to take these cases off of some of these phones sometimes).

tbh, I always recommend a phone case, even if it's a cheap one
