I enjoy arguing more than a lot of things, but you are right. NOTHING EVER GETS SOLVED HERE. EVER. It's way too unorganzied, nobody will sway, and it eventually the thread dies with a lot of angry people.

Seriously, if you want to discuss abortion, let's all sit in a circle and talk. This is too unorganized.

LOL

I'll repost my VM to you. =P

Your Poll needs to be changed since it's not objective...XD

Well...I can go without controversial threads in OC but Debating is always fun. ^_^

People just always cannot take it in a light-hearted way. That's why it devolves into a flame-war. =/

Seriously. PC is just for fun. =D

Seriously, there's no point in posting about controversial topics.

1. People only post there to state their unwavering opinion. Just that, not even trying to convince other people.

Well what's the point of debating if we don't know what the other side belives?

2. No one will change their opinion, no matter how wrong or how much evidence they have against them.

As we've read on another post. People DO change opinions.

3. It just creates a long-winded, pointless discussion where people are only trying to prove their knowledge about a topic.

It's not pointless. People become informed of the other sides thoughts on life. Remember an informed electorate is needed if Democracy is going to work.

4. There's seriously no point.

There's always a point. People have to demand WHY? Things are like this if they don't want to be oppressed.

I know I'm guilty of this, but only because it's fun to debate. Some, though, are so adamant about pushing their opinion.. it's just.. bleh.

Well, vote in the poll and such. No need to discuss.. It'll just end up like all the other controversial threads.

I am not trying to flame or hurt anyone's feelings here. I am just explaining the positives of debating freely in an online forum. ^_^

Well since this issue has been brought into light NOT by me:
Another VM I made about this issue of restricting controversial threads on PC after receiving this negative rep
Please stop posting threads about politics. One of these days, you'll start something you can't stop.
I know others will make political/current events thread eventually and if that also devolves into a flame war, with this kind of thinking the mods might impose a new OC rule dictating the end to all things political.

No more discussion on religion 'cuz it's political, no more current events 'cuz it's political, no more discussion on morality 'cuz it's political, no more discussion on personality 'cuz it's political, no more discussion on anything controversial that must be tackled 'cuz it's political.

What would OC be then? Things about monsters/conspiracy theories, supernatural things, and (the Funny randomness) of DCC and PYPT?

O_o

Seriously if people just realize that the person they're talking too another person that just wants to put things forward and take it in a light-hearted way (As in it's all for FUN) things will be a lot more civil around here.

:)

Edit: I voted in the poll as "Yeah" XD

Well, it's not just political. It's all of the social (not)sciences.
Sociological
Economical
Psychological
Political
Anthropological
Geographical
Historical

You will never have any debatable topic that doesn't have any of those. It's just life.

There is a point. If someone feels strongly against something, don't you wanna know why? I almost laughed myself to death seeing the thread description.

There is absolutely a point; It gives you the opportunity to hear others people views.

While it may not change your mind about the subject you can at least learn why others feel differently.

This ^^ If people want to debate, they can, but if they don't, they just stay away from such topics. Also, if they believe something, they will debate it (often) with good evidence to support their thoughts. So, I disagree, I think debate is what keeps communities alive and kicking and keeps people thinking and learning.

Uh-huh. Debating is a key skill in oral speaking. While it won't really help oral speaking skills when debating on an internet forum, you can still learn to prove your point. And, besides, what would be the fun of any forum without debates? They are useful for learning more about other people.

Every time I go into a debate thread, there's always someone with a misconception about something. So no, they aren't pointless: they typically lead to an educational atmosphere if executed correctly. It's when people start being morons and fighting that problems and pointlessness occurs.

I think you just proved yourself wrong, mate :P

people like to argue about controversial topics because its fun. I personally love a good debate about religion, abortion, vegetarianism, politics, etc. because they give the brain a good work-out. Less so on politics, though :X they confuzzle me

Debating is indeed fun, but I always tend to see discussions get a little out of hand most of the time. I don't really ever debate though, so I don't know what it's like.

Thread tldr;;

This thread is hypocritical. There's no point in posting it since people will just post their unwavering opinions.
This post is supposed to be sarcastic.

I'm not sure if I've ever read a more stereotypical and ridiculous post.

1. That's a lie. I post with the soul intent of getting people to understand my view, as do most of the people I debate with. In a lot of cases, people's views on different matters have changed after reading other people's posts. I know I look at a number of things differently now that I've read over threads concerning controversial topics.

2. Stop stereotyping. That might be true when it comes to a small minority, but most level-headed people can see when they're wrong and they're able to accept that.

3. No, it doesn't. A long-winded discussion may take place in which points are thrown between posters like a tennis ball in Wimbledon, but there is definitely a point to it.

4. A bunch of people here beg to differ.

And yes, it is fun to debate. Certain people may be unable to accept that they're wrong, but that doesn't speak for everyone in the world, as your post seems to be saying. Most debates are cool; they just end up like train wrecks because one person comes in who isn't mature enough to handle the topic.
