6th Gen Too Much Water...

A little off topic: apparently if you use surf with a sharpedo, you can cross the sea a lot quicker than regular water types.

I think too many HM's is a legitimate complaint, since it honestly is bothersome having to give up potential spots for good moves, just to make sure you can actually progress in the games, or having to replace a Pokemon with an HM slave. However, like most, I don't agree with complaining about the amount of water. It's part of what makes Hoenn what it is, and it ties well into the story. The story is basically the battle between the sea and land, and they tie this well together with how the region is built, by making a large part of the journey take place on the water. And while I may personally not have liked it very much in R/S, as long as the encounter rates have been made smaller, or the prices for repels reduced, I have nothing against it, and it definitely wouldn't be a faithful remake if they decided to remove some of the water.

Regarding the water complaint, in my opinion, the water in this game is what makes it unique! It's my favorite region because of the large amount of water routes. I think it makes the game really fun.

Water? In the Hoenn region? No way!

I think the complaint is silly. It was a remake, so of course it would have the same layout as the originals... and yes, that means a lot of water!

People saying that GameFreak included less surfing grounds in generations after Hoenn clearly don't understand that each region is supposed to have it's own geography and climates/habitats. Yes, each region is based on a region in Japan, and Hoenn is based on a region of a cluster of islands. Ever wonder why Sinnoh is a winter wonderland? It is based on Hokkaido.

Now that I've completed the game, I must say that this complaint is nowhere legitimate. There is a lot of water, yes, but the encounter rates have gone way down. I can surf for quite a fair distance before encountering a wild pokemon. The encounter rates were a lot more in the originals.

Also, there are a fair number of surfing ace trainers who use pokemon of other types, besides water. Yes, swimmers and triathletes still exist (and they use water types) but at least there's better variety in trainer battles.

HM wise, that's legitimate. I didn't need to keep a HM slave in XY, but ORAS kinda forces me to keep one. At least you can now replace fly with soar, but the latter takes a longer time. Rock Smash regaining HM status is really silly imo, and the move deleter being at Lilycove City makes matters worse.

Actually for the HM, once you get the Eon Flute Fly is pretty much useless. Flash is not really used, Rock Smash came back as an HM. Actually the game use less HM than the original and 2 of them are mostly never used anymore. Dive and Surf are easier now that you can pick certain pokemons to go faster.

I'm sure most others have mentioned this, but Hoenn is a tropical region so expect a lot of water throughout the region, not just the ocean but it's also why there's a huge presence of Water-type Pokemon (and also Water-type specialist trainers in the watery areas). I know the water gets more evident in Alpha Sapphire (due to Team Aqua and Kyogre), and as Cerberus87 said the large number of water might be the cause of later regions having less water areas.

Also, the encounter rate in the water got lowered compared to the originals, so things like Tentacool constantly popping up isn't as annoying now. And you can travel faster if using a Sharpedo as well.

I did read about how certain Pokémon get benefits while surfing. This is making me want to breed a Carvanha that I can use for Mega Sharpedo :P

And here the abundance of water is nowhere near as much of a big deal it feels like. But I was hoping Rock Smash wouldn't be a HM, sadly it is. And now there are Strength rocks that require you to have the HM every time, which feels worse.

I really loved how 5th Gen and X/Y handled the Strength mechanics, but now they're taking a nostalgia trip and making them annoying again. You can easily tell they wanted a lot of the HM puzzles to be the same annoying selves they were originally given this is a remake.

However I am also kinda sad they still didn't bring back the ability to cut grass down, especially now that the tall grass on some routes looks even taller than it did in previous generations. It was a feature I loved in the originals and it's so baffling they never brought it back after that. I even saw a pic of OR/AS Route 119 having so many tall grass it literally concealed you, unlike previous generations.

On a side note, I really want to enjoy riding on a Kyogre while using Surf and Dive hahahaha.

I'm still laughing about the review actually; I didn't get mad at all. It has turned into a joke in my family, except my mom who doesn't get it. When I bought the game I hit the gift option on amazon and put "too much water" in the description. But it's ridiculous to rate a game based on "too much water" when, as it has been stated many times before, hoenn is an island region but each to their own.

If you have completed the game...

Spoiler:

I love all the water in Hoenn. I love how in the old games you could g endlessly on the water see if there was a gap in the barriers to a short cut or the diving areas and the rapids areas. I am not that far in the current game yet but if it is as good as the old one I am all for it. It is a shame more recent games never had so much water again. I was hopeful again in x and y but alas nothing just a little body of water and no hideouts and secrets to discover.
